APPLICATIONS

Applications are processed weekly, every weekend. The cut-off time for the submission of applications is 11:59PST on Saturday.
✗ Before applying, please read the FAQ and Rules pages.
✗ Please submit your application with the journal you plan to use if you have one made already. If not, another journal is fine, but we prefer your intended journal so it makes for an easier time in granting access to the mod journal and the contacts page.
✗ For very long applications, we would ask you to please separate them into various comments so that they will not take up too much of the page.
✗ Please title your application as { [CANON/CANON OC/OC]CHARACTER NAME || Series Title || reserve/no reserve || X of X } in the subect header
IMPORTANT: Our application form was edited on September 07, 2015. Please use the revised form.
✗ If you are looking for an example of what an application should be like, please refer to the application here for an example of a canon character application, and here for an original character application.

A note for CR AU applications
Ruby City does allow previous game history/CR to be brought over on a case by case basis. If you want to include this in your application please add additional sections for PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT and PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY beneath the Personality and Background/History sections.

In these additional sections we would like to see a brief outline of your character's previous game history and how it potentially impacted on and altered their canon personality.

CHARACTER
Name: Machi Tobaye
Canon: Ace Attorney
Age: 14/15
Timeline: Approximately 8 months post-canon
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: Klavier wants pretty much nothing to do with Machi. The entire escapade was a bunch of bad news for him--his guitar was set on fire while he was playing it, he was used as an unwitting mule to smuggle an incredibly illegal object into the U.S., his best friend (and bassist) was a murderer... nope. If Machi wanted to apologise, great, but otherwise no. And Machi would prefer to avoid Klavier--the whole "tried really hard to convict Machi of murder" thing does not make him feel great and in fact between that and his incredible level of active guilt in the whole thing... yeah he'd sooner avoid the man. Basically "don't bother me and I won't bother you."

Personality: The 'other half' of Lamiroir--Lamiroir says at one point in the game that she and Machi together are 'Lamiroir,' and in a way this is quite true. Prior to the murder and trial, the two were never separated and had almost a symbiotic relationship--they were always seen together, hand in hand, 'The Siren of the Ballad' and 'the Pixie of the Arpeggio.' He is very devoted to her and has dedicated his life to her, whether she realises it still or not. On his own, Machi is generally a very smart, gentle boy, but does not do well around people he does not know. In fact, with the exception of Lamiroir (and possibly Daryan), his attitude towards others could best be described as either "indifferent" or "uneasy," depending--at worst, he's visibly nervous and sometimes easily startled; Machi is shy around strangers and hard to get to know because of it. In fact, if you push him towards conversations he doesn't want to have, he can even become downright abrasive, although usually that's a good sign you screwed up somewhere.

Coming from a world where a lot of people are either fundamentally good or fundamentally bad, Machi is a little bit of both--possibly fifty percent on each side, possibly a little more of one than the other. Either way, he's in significantly more conflict than most and struggles with his actions a lot. Machi sees himself as bad, but refuses to identify himself as such, trying very hard to be the good person Lamiroir wants him to be. He tells lies (a lot) and manipulates others, but is also completely and unnecessarily honest, alternating erratically between the two and creating a very hypocritical (and possibly dangerous) persona in the wake of his conviction. I don't know whether in his heart Machi is fundamentally bad or good, but I know that whichever of the two manifests depends as much on the people around him as the events that shape his life... and that there will always be that other part of him as well, just not always demonstrated. For Machi, it's not so much a question of moralities as it is a question of loyalties. He wants to do the right thing. He just doesn't know what the right thing is yet.

There's also his 'darkness'... Lamiroir alludes to it at the end of case 4-3. Lying isn't necessarily all he's capable of.

Machi's great love is the piano. He directs himself towards music obsessively and often ignores other people in favour of the piano, preferring the company of music to the company of other human beings. Machi himself is very withdrawn and stoic (read: unresponsive to or afraid of dealing with people); however, his playing is far more expressive and emotional than is, and carries a lot of feeling that he himself could never express. In fact, it could be theorised (possibly incorrectly, possibly not) that he expresses himself through his music rather than through verbal or visual communication--i.e. normal communicative means. Regardless, he's definitely a prodigy. I've had one person on the spectrum describe Machi as a little autistic, and that might be a good way to describe him; however, he does become braver and more normal-acting when you get to know him (or rather, he gets to know you and becomes comfortable around you--it helps when he knows what to expect, which takes a while), so I'm not entirely sure that's accurate. That said, his understandings of things are often very abnormal, and this often compounds his presentation as something of an oddball. This, coupled with his perpetual stoicism and sometimes irrationally rigid adherence to rules that may or may not have a bearing on the situation, means that he is sometimes impenetrable--very often right when he needs to be understood the most. His sporadic kindness is as much a strength as a weakness, as it may be taken advantage of--on the flip side of this, his paranoia and mistrust can prevent him from seeking help when he actually needs it, or making friendships when they are available. And gentle though he is, he is not afraid to get his hands dirty. He is partially dedicated to surviving in a country whose language he understands poorly, and occasionally gets extremely frustrated flustered in dealing with other people. If it gets really bad, he may abandon the situation and run away. A people person Machi is not.

Ironically, Machi has a problem with facing his problems--he avoids them, runs away, or pretends not to know they're there instead of taking on even simple dilemmas out of fear of doing the wrong thing. He doesn't like confrontation, and violence is something he seeks to avoid. This probably has something to do with the above, as well as his very limited and unusual life experiences, which leave him ill-equipped to deal with normal day to day things (though he has learned a lot), let alone unusual and more drastic or complicated situations. He is somewhat prone to panic and indecision because of this, and is very nervous around unfamiliar things.

Unfortunately, he's also prone to excessive stoicism.

One thing to remember about Machi, however, is that he is smart. No matter how much trouble he has with English or seeing things the right way, or how scared he may be, he is extremely clever and resourceful and may surprise you when you least expect it. That is all.

CHARACTER
Name: Makoto Naegi
Canon: Danganronpa: Academy of Hope and High School Students of Despair
Age: 17/18
Timeline: End of the first game.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?:N/A

Personality:

Makoto Naegi is the sort of person who could be essentially called an “average guy”. Not only can we see this by how we’re given Naegi’s point of view throughout the game, but this is often stated by Naegi himself along the story, more than once; in fact, it’s basically how he introduces himself to the player/viewer off the bat. Ironically enough, it’s his average quality that makes him stand out among his peers, but first, we need to go through Naegi’s personality and events he’s been through to truly understand how he functions.

As said before, Naegi is an “average guy”, a normal highschool student, self proclaimed and proved. When he finds himself having been randomly chosen to attend the revered Hope’s Peak Academy (a special high school reserved for the best of the best in each area, with the exception of a single random lottery selected student each year, who is given the title of Super High School Level Good Luck by simply being selected), he shows some doubt over whether he truly belongs in such a place, possessing no unique qualities or any noticeable feature. He goes as far as saying he’s “An average person among average people”.
Further into the story, in a conversation with his classmate Chihiro Fujisaki, when asked if he has any sort of complex, Naegi directly confesses his insecurity about being a normal student, surrounded by those of “Super High School Level”. When asked how exactly he overcomes this issue, Naegi states that he can’t - so he just simply tries to accept it as a fact - along with explaining how, in his belief, everyone has their own complexes, and how time shouldn’t be lost brooding about them, but immersing oneself in a way to better themselves and forgetting about these problems.

This brings up another of Naegi’s traits, one that’s stated as possibly his “only” unique feature: his optimism. Naegi never really lets himself fall into doubt and insecurities for too long. Despite the awful situations that he and his classmates face, despite all the traumatizing events he experiences, he’s often the first person to claim that no one can lose hope. This characteristic drives him through the story, and, without it, there’s a high possibility that things would have gone in extremely different ways, to the point of fatality.
His optimism proves itself to be an incredibly practical feature, one that seems to lack in some of his classmates. With his ability to spot even the smallest bit of positivity even in the darkest, or strangest, or most awkward situations, Naegi managed to gain the friendship of most of his classmates, even the most moody or aggressive, like Mondo Oowada, Touko Fukawa, Byakuya Togami; he even managed to gain the trust of Kyouko Kirigiri, who, while not exactly aggressive or moody, does have a particular way of keeping herself from fully trusting others. Naegi manages to strike a particularly close friendship with her, going as far as lying/omitting crucial information in one of the class trials to save her life, only to be, as far as it seemed in the moment, betrayed by the person he had just saved. She later save his life, for a second time during the plot, in fact. This, coupled with several other more personal moments between the two, reveals the strong bond of friendship and trust they both formed.
It’s also of notice how his optimism translates into trust while dealing with some of his classmates; although he’s not entirely naive, there are some times when his positive outlook doesn’t work as well as expected. For example, during the first chapter of the story, Naegi finds himself infatuated to his classmate Sayaka Maizono, who had gone to the same school as him in the past, but they had never spoken, due to their different social standards. Sayaka, recognizing Naegi from the time when she witnessed him capturing and nursing a crane, that had injured itself when it broke into the school and got stuck in the pool, back to health and confessing to having wanted to talk to him ever since, quickly befriends and charms Naegi. It is unclear if Sayaka returned Naegi’s feelings; but when it is revealed that she went to great lengths to frame Naegi for murder so that she could buy her own freedom from Hope’s Academy, he still does his best to deny that possibility. Unfortunately, this accusation is proven, leaving him devastated. After the trial, Kirigiri does theorize that, during her last moments, Sayaka must have regretted her actions, leaving behind a crucial clue to clear Naegi’s name.
Despite this, and despite the murderous and treacherous actions among his classmates, Naegi still states that he doesn’t blame them; that the situation they found themselves in pushed them into doing such awful acts, and that he will continue fighting, for freedom and for all of them, showing both great perseverance and trust.

Naegi is noticeably passive, most of the time. This can be easily seen by the way he interacts with his classmates. He tends to mostly listen, more often than not sounding a bit awkward or surprised by the things he hears, but he still does his best to lend an ear, specially to those who seemed troubled. He often keeps his most, perhaps, possibly “offensive” thoughts to himself, as a way to not spark any sort of argument or any sort of negative consequence. This ties to how many of the students find him trustworthy; some of his classmates, like Sakura Oogami and Chihiro Fujisaki seem to feel gradually more at ease as they continue to speak with him, revealing details about their lives and asking questions that perhaps they wouldn’t with the rest, or at least most of their peers.

Naegi’s optimism and connections with his classmates prove themselves crucial to their survival. Nearing the ending of the game story, all the surviving characters are put on the line to make the heaviest decision yet, one that could easily cost not only their freedom, but their actual lives. When things look the bleakest and they’re all on edge and about to give up, Naegi’s words of hope and encouragement manage to soothe them and help them clear their minds and make the right choice. With this, his surviving friends bestow upon him the title of Super High School Level Hope, in honor of his performance and how, without his words, they could have lost any chance of freedom.

Naegi is then, indeed, an average high school student, plunged into situations he had never dreamed of before. But, thanks to his (somewhat overlooked, in the beginning, by himself) skills, he perseveres, he keeps on moving, he comforts and cheers on, and he truly wins his title as Super High School Level Hope, prepared to face any other straining situations that might be thrown upon him and his friends.
