CHARACTER Name: The Batter Canon: OFF Age: Unknown. He appears…as an adult? Possibly in his twenties. Timeline: Right before the final battle. The end is still up to you after all. If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: n/a
Personality: The Batter is a pragmatic individual who insists that he, as well as you—his puppeteer—are on a mission of purification that you must see through to the final end. While his use of language does indicate he holds some level of intelligence, the Batter chooses his words carefully, measuring and dispensing them as if he only has precious few to give. As such, he comes off as blunt, when really he would consider himself focused on his holy duty. It’s with this straightforward nature that he regards almost everything. Despite the fact that he must fight the “burnt” Elsen residents of all the Zones he purifies throughout OFF, he insists that he is only “purifying” them and fulfilling his mission. There is nothing but his duty. And as the game classes him in the status menu…the Batter is a Purifier.
Along with this bluntness he displays is a very serious demeanor. The Batter never once smiles throughout the game—not that he has much to smile about, let’s be real—nor does he show any inclination towards positive emotion even when he’s doing his “job” and purifying the zones. In fact, his sprite shows that he’s got his head tilted back slightly, eyes closed, and depending on interpretation, his brows could be drawn over his eyes in a condescending manner, with the twist of the lips to match. It certainly goes along with the way he regards everyone. The Batter really doesn’t take anyone’s shit lying down, and pretty much does his own thing, even convincing the Elsens in Damien rather forcefully to let him purify the mines.
He doesn’t show much remorse either, not in killing the “misguided” Dedan or the puffed up Japhet. Not Enoch, or even the burnt Elsens. Quite noticeably, he’s taken part in at least two battles where the opponents did not fight back. One was in Zone 3, with the Elsen crying for help and unable to attack otherwise, and against Hugo, which depending on translation, could be considered either his son or his creator. Or both, which is also accepted, and I kind of like that one so I’ll run with it. Oh those crazy French to English translations!
Background: Very little is actually known about the Batter’s history, but what can be inferred is available here
Strengths/Weaknesses: Strengths: -He’s good in a fight. -Especially a fight with a bat. -He’s loyal to most causes that have to do with the eradication of spirits. -Can sense spectral or otherwise inhuman beings. -Is very intelligent. -Has the ability to alter his form. (this is a bit of headcanon at work. I’ll explain it in abilities more.)
Weaknesses: -Stubborn and does what he thinks is right. -He has a bat and he’s not afraid to use it. -Has the mentality of kill first, ask questions later when it comes to eradicating spirits, occasionally. -Condescending nature with zero fucks to power his brain-mouth filter. -He’s somewhat self-serving. -Blunt and hard to converse with. -Cannot swim. Thank goodness for Pedalos, right?
Abilities: The Batter is, as a Purifier/Savior, able to use his bat in order to harm spectral creatures, and in turn can also use what are known as “competences” in OFF. Competences are just acquired skills. Since he is a well-rounded individual, the Batter is able to use both attack and healing competences, though he has no status-affecting ones. In RC, these competences will be utilized in much the same way as they are in OFF. That is, he will use his energy devoted to competence use (CP) in order to activate them, and will drain his vitality with each usage.
In addition to his competences, when severely angered or backed into a corner, the Batter has the ability to shift his form. He is not human, so this isn’t completely unexpected. When he allows this and shifts into the “Bad Batter” form, he becomes somewhat larger, with grotesquely elongated hands and clawed fingers, while his head takes on the shape of a crocodilian creature, all sharp teeth and pure white eyes. He retains humanlike ears, and is still wearing his baseball uniform, along with the cap. The form is just…well, pertaining to anything but what he was before. The Bad Batter ((SPOILERS)) is the form of the Batter that the player sees should they choose the alternate ending in which they side with the Judge and elect to stop the Batter from “completing his holy mission” as he so sees it.
The Batter’s form in truth is difficult to discern, as he is imbued with the ability to shift from this monstrous creature to the form that the player sees through 99% of the game. My headcanon is that his uniformed, baseball player self is a visage which he created by imitation. LEADING INTO ANOTHER HEADCANON…the Batter’s imitation is somewhat imperfect, and where he would have eyeblack…he actually has another set of eyes. Yes. The Batter has four eyes. The second set below his primary eyes are usually shut, or else if he has both sets open they’re hidden by the brim of his baseball cap. But when visible, they appear bright and red, and somehow natural to his face. Go figure. Note, this is my headcanon. It’s just how I like it. And also note that in his Bad Batter state, he has only one set of eyes. The second pair of eyes is an error, and one he doesn’t feel the need to correct anymore, because he’s used to the four eyes in his usual body.
First Person: [This isn’t what the Batter is expecting now that he’s dispatched the Queen. What he expected was to dispense the same judgment upon a less frightful foe. This train is not part of his plan. And he’s not sure he likes it. But this is what his puppeteer wants, and he cannot delay it, correct?
Sigh. This is tiresome.
Rising from his seat on the train, he exits slowly. Cleated shoes tap quietly against the floor , and he peers around with a pointed lack of care written on his pale white face. Literally white face. Not just caucausian, but white. His bat is held loosely at his side, and he’s very aware that his add-ons are not currently at his side. How troublesome.
But speaking of add-ons, he does realize that he has an extra bit of weight in his pocket. Reaching his free hand into said pocket, he tugs the watch out, dangling it in front of his face by the chain. It spins idly in front of him, the face of it broadcasting his surroundings and features as it pans rapidly.]
What is this? What is going on? Tell me what Zone I am in. I am not finished.
Third Person: The Batter knew his puppeteer was not the one who should be trusted to sort these puzzles out. He’d been walked back and forth more than a few times already, rereading and reiterating the pieces to a riddle he’d long ago solved just by being observant. But then, if he didn’t let the player figure it out, what would they ever learn in the end?
Trick question, if he thought about it. They weren’t learning anything at all. Not about him, about his life, the Queen, the Guardians, or even the child. Hmm…the child…none of that really did matter to the player. What mattered was that the Batter got to the end of it all. The end of this mad scramble would yield the ultimate prize.
He frowned as he realized that there were specters nearby. No…not just specters. There was an Elsen among them. Oh, he hated fighting the burnt. Not out of any sort of regret, but out of annoyance. They were stronger than the usual ghosts, and pricked the conscience of his “master.”
But they would not run too often. And especially not from battles that mattered. He would not allow it. That much was under his control.
