Born and raised in an orphanage, Tom knew from an early age that he was different to the other children, able to perform feats of magic that he used to torment and torture the other orphans, to the point that he once took two of them to a cave and performed an act so horrifying that they were traumatised into silence. Even before enrolling in Hogwarts, Tom was capable of Legilimency and Occlumency, using his talents to toy with people’s minds while keeping his own shielded. He was also able to ‘speak’ to animals, and is a Parselmouth – possessing an ability to speak to snakes passed down through the bloodline of his mother’s side.
Tom’s personality is composed of two facets – the side the he presents to everyone, and the reality.
On the surface, he would seem to be a charming, handsome and polite young man. He gained a reputation in Hogwarts through his intelligence and appearance of being a model student, seen as ‘poor, but brilliant’. His lack of parents inspired a sympathy in others, leading to him being viewed as brave, with only Albus Dumbledore remaining suspicious of him.
However, behind that quiet, charismatic façade, Tom Riddle is an ambitious, cruel and sadistic young man believing in the superiority of pure-blood wizards and witches despite being a half-blood himself. This hypocritical view comes from his being ashamed of his family, from his muggle father to his pure-blood mother, who he sees as weak and unworthy. He clings to his familial connection with Salazar Slytherin as a conformation of his own self-worth, after discovering that he is descended from the House founder.
Arrogant and megalomaniacal to the point of sociopathic, Tom is possessed of a Machiavellian personality which he uses to its utmost to manipulate those around him. He is a liar, and a hypocrite, often expecting of others what he would not do himself, putting his ‘allies’ into harms’ way and disposing of them like toys when he has no further use for them, having very little concern for the effects that his actions may have upon others – only whether or not they will be beneficial to him. He easily dismisses things which have no (perceived) value, such as softer emotions like kindness and love, a trait which would be to his detriment later in his life.
He will keep his word when it suits him to do so and as long as it doesn’t get in his way, or if the person asking is of a certain level of usefulness to him at that given moment. While he can acknowledge the mistakes that he makes he doesn’t seem to learn from them, and he will become very unpredictable when angry, swinging from calm and composed to an explosion of fiery rage within moments. He becomes uncomfortable, even fearful when things around him begin to slip beyond his control, and is not above cowardice in situations where it would benefit him.
Tom has an almost pathological fear of death, believing it to be the utmost of human weakness. While attending Hogwarts he became obsessed with the idea of immortality and how he could attain it, and he also discovered his lineage and his status as the Heir of Slytherin. It was through this revelation that he found the entrance to Salazar Slytherin’s Chamber of Secrets.
Unfortunately, he has found himself whisked away to Ruby City before he was able to open it…
