CHARACTER
Name: The Major
Canon: Hellsing
Age: Early 30's in appearance, but he's physically stunted.
Timeline: After being killed by Sir Hellsing.

Personality: The Major loves war. He loves strife and conflict and finds true fulfillment within the battlefield. As countless lives are ended in an instant or traitors are one by one sought after and purged, hung up on the streets for everyone to gawk at, he smiles as he relishes in the utter depravity of the moment. He cares little for which side is victorious, nor does he subscribe to any belief system. The Major's alliance to Germany is more or less just lip service. He may carry the banner of his country somewhere on his clothing, but it really means little to him beyond signifying his role as soldier, one who fights in wars. His interests couldn't be more distant from things like politics, ideology, or the future. They're just decorations that people insist on hiding behind as they give into their primal selves. What makes a soldier a soldier, however, is the inclination to obey and the Major is willing to honor and respect the wishes of whoever he follows. Working under limitations gives him more of a challenge, which he welcomes wholeheartedly.

As a person, the Major is calm and refers to people politely and courteously. Even when the other party is yelling at him, he would feel no reason to stoop to their level. War-obsessed as he is, there's no reason to be rude, right? He is well-read and cultured given how many plays, books, and operas he makes references of. During his fifty years in hiding, it has been hinted that the Major has taken up a hobby in anime, given him singing out the theme song of Fist of the North Star. He follows anything that interests him from high culture to pop culture, demonstrating more of his artistic side. The frightening thing about the Major is that without mentioning his obsession with war, he could pass off as an interesting person in ordinary society, if just somewhat eccentric. Alas, this jolly, pleasant side of him only comes off as condescending in moments of high tension.

The Major respects his men. All he asks for is loyalty. If his men can provide him with it, then he will happily lead them on till the distant end of their struggles. He promises of a reawakening in Valhalla, the paradise for warriors where battles are eternal. While indeed, the man is leading everyone to their deaths, making his men “kindling for his personal bonfire”, this is exactly what he promised he would do. Just the same, he respects his greatest enemies just the same as his allies. He delighted in seeing both Integra and Seras reach their true potentials, never once underestimating them. Even Alucard, who he hates for being a monster, is still someone who doesn't fail to amuse and impress him. Enemy or friend, regardless of alliances, he sees the battlefield as a place where everybody comes together, united under a twisted equality. During a monologue, the Major fondly referred to the soldiers of all sides fighting as his “brethren”.

For all his actions, he truly believes in his own humanity. The only thing that proves one is a human is the soul, regardless of what physical form he takes on. To be a genuine human is to accept the base desires in one's self and work to fulfill it at all costs no matter the sacrifice, including the lives of others and the self. In other words, he hates monsters, vampires in particular, for being entities that live off others' lives, sharing their own in the process. Everything that he has belongs to him and to nobody else. The thought of sharing his existence with another fills him with such contempt that it's almost a testament to how greedy the man is. He doesn't mind killing and being killed, but to share his life with another fills him with genuine hatred. The Major is defined by bloodlust and greed, no better than an axe-swinging barbarian, only with a penchant for vocabulary. He has no capability to regret or to empathize with anybody like at least Alucard can, making him an even greater monster for all his talks of humanity.
