Personality: Ruby is a very excitable young woman. When she gets interested in something, she tends to go overboard with her enthusiasm, as evidenced by her romanticizing of the Huntsmen and Huntresses that she practically idolizes. She approaches most everything with this same sense of enthusiasm, vowing to be the best she can be in all things. The one exception to this is when it comes to her studies. She likes to read, but only novels. Things like textbooks and history lessons bore her, and her mind tends to wander when bored, to the point that she will begin to doodle in class rather than taking notes. Of course, these doodles are given her full attention and enthusiasm as well.
In terms of social interaction, Ruby is very awkward. She often speaks before she thinks, and will tend to shy away from crowds. Despite her enthusiasm and drive to be the very best she can be, she also wants to be a normal girl. Something that has been made infinitely more difficult in the light of her acceptance into Beacon University two years ahead of her classmates. Her close bond to her sister, Yang, has been both a blessing and curse to her since coming to Beacon with her older sister. The two are very close and thus are very prone to watching each other's back and helping out whenever possible, however, Ruby does feel almost inadequate in comparison to Yang. She sees Yang as the ideal she has to live up to, and the position of "leader" on their team makes her feel even more awkward.
Above all, though, Ruby's defining trait is her sense of justice. She has a very strong sense of justice and honor. Almost to a fault. She tends to rush into a situation head-first and figure out details later, and is undaunted by odds. While admirable, this could easily land her in trouble if outnumbered or outmatched in terms of skill or ability. She joined Beacon University to pursue a career as a Huntress and keep people safe from the Creatures of Grimm that plague the land. At one point, she even said she chose to be a Huntress instead of a police officer because being a huntress was "way more cool." Her child-like innocence, coupled with a grim understanding of how her world is makes for a unique person within the academy.
