Dirk Strider | Homestuck | Reserved

Personality:

Although a definite show-off when it comes to the things he’s done – particularly making robots, Dirk doesn’t tend to overplay his personal thoughts and preferences. Like pre-Scratch Dave, Dirk favours irony, but in contrast to Dave does not pepper it with curses, preferring to lean more towards intellectual quips leading to him often coming off as obnoxious. Laid back by nature, he is very invested in the welfare and personal development of his friends, to the point that he will openly insult them (as he often does with Jake, ironically of course) in an effort to change their perceptions. He encourages his friend Jake to be more cynical and sceptical, thinking him too naïve, while at the same time criticising how distrustful Jane is. He will also encourage Jake to work things out for himself instead of relying on him for help, for example when he insists that Jake fight Brobot as a consequence of having wasted uranium.

Dirk’s dream self on Derse has been awake for years, but unlike Dave (who was unaware of his own conscious dream self), Dirk is fully aware and in control of his own. He has spent most of his conscious time on Derse in hiding, while looking out for Roxy’s sleepwalking dream self, and when he finally chose to reveal himself after a foiled assassination attempt by the Batterwitch, he did so in spectacular fashion, publically impaling the agent’s head on a spike and parading it through the streets of Derse. He has the ability to quickly switch between his normal and dream selves, and has been known to enjoy “legendary infinite showers”, presumably taken when he is focusing on his dream self.

He is a fan of horses, having many horse and pony themed posters in his bedroom, and also watches “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic”, claiming that it is purely for academic reasons. However, he will admit to liking Rainbow Dash, because ‘she is so spunky <3’. Despite this, he often makes fun of Jake’s apparent infatuation with the character Neytiri from Avatar, calling her a ‘gigantic shitty space furry’. Whether this observation can be taken ironically given Dirk’s already established love of anthropomorphic candy-coloured ponies is anybody’s guess.

Like his pre-scratch self, Bro Strider, Dirk has a big interest in smuppets and puppets in general. Lil’ Cal is his favourite puppet, and, Dirk claims, his best friend. His own older brother had been dead for well over a century before Dirk came along, though he had left the means for Dirk’s survival behind. While he idolises his bro, Jane believes that he is bitter about his successes with Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff. Dirk has a Hella Jeff tattoo, with jpeg artefacts, on his shoulder.

Illustrating his proficiency with robots and computer programming, Dirk is in possession of a home-made auto-responder which is designed to mimic his speech patterns, personality and typing style while he isn’t at his computer. The auto-responder is based on his thirteen year old self, and by the time he is fifteen still retains a 98% margin of accuracy (though this was reduced to 92% after some pressure from Jake). The auto-responder has implied that Dirk has a romantic interest in Jake, which would seem to be backed up by conversations that have been had between the two. Jake, however, seems to be utterly unaware of the fact.
