CHARACTER Name: Kanji Tatsumi Canon: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 Age: Just 16/Looks like he’s 19 Timeline: May 3rd, 2012 If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A
Personality: Despite his tough appearance, Kanji enjoys to sew and knit. Yep, you read that right. This tall (he’s 6’) and rough looking guy likes to do some decidedly not very masculine hobbies. That could probably be blamed on the fact that his family owns the local textile store in Inaba and he’s the only son. However, he really just enjoys his hobbies and he doesn’t really care what anyone thinks. (Including you.)
At least, that’s what he’d like for you to believe. The fact of the matter is that Kanji cares very much what others think of him. He has tried to balance out his hobbies and his father’s last words to him about being a “real man”. Sadly, he is unable to do this and has thus begun to rebel against the loneliness that his “strange” hobbies have forced him into. Girls find him strange and creepy for doing “girly” things and guys teased and picked on him until he started to fight back.
As such, he spent a lot of time angry at those around him, while really wanting to have friends. When he first shows up as a character of interested in both the anime and the game, it is because he is on a news program, beating up a biker gang. Most of the kids in the school believe that he is now the leader of said gang, but he has nothing to do with them. Really.
~ "Underestimate me, and this is what you get!" ~
When he is later asked about the incident, he tells the Investigation Team that he was only trying to get the gang to go away so his mother could sleep, since the loud noises were keeping her awake at night. In the anime, the protagonist sees Kanji in the halls after seeing him on the Midnight Channel—making him a marked future victim of the killer of Inaba—where the taller boy drops a cute, pink, knitted doll. Kanji is, of course, extremely embarrassed and becomes a little aggressive as he attempts to get away completely. (And though this is a dumbing down of the actual development that his S.Link with the protagonist goes through, it’s not exact and it’s fairly superficial. Therefore, it’s going to be ignored as nothing but an example of his attitude.)
When he meets Naoto, he finds the young detective attractive, but believing she is a guy, Kanji begins to question his sexuality. When he is abducted into the TV world, his dungeon is a steamy, questionable bath house filled with sweaty, well-muscled shadows. The battle with his Shadow is filled with questionably effeminate behaviour, meaning to remark on the fact that he might be homosexual. However, when it came down it, Kanji’s real problem is that he’s terrified of rejection, no matter the gender of the person. When he realizes this, through the help of the protagonist and the rest of the Investigation Team, he punches his Shadow in the face, knocking it out before accepting that as a part of himself. (He is the only member of the team to strike his Shadow.)
~ "It ain't a matter of guys or chicks... I'm just scared shitless of being rejected." ~
During his development with the rest of the team, he learns to become more comfortable with himself. He shows that he is a normal teenage boy with normal desires on the school camp-out by getting a nosebleed when Chie and Yukiko dress up in skimpy bathing suits. He also tries to prove his manliness to Yosuke by rushing into the girls’ side of the encampment, despite the fact that a very hostile teacher (Mr. Morooka, AKA King Moron) was patrolling to keep the boys from being in the girls’ tents. He takes the teasing very well, for all intents and purposes, but it is only when Naoto is involved that it becomes an issue and you can see his shy side come out.
His Social Link is personified by the Emperor Arcana and begins in the game under the rumour of him bullying other students. The Protagonist can find him in the practice building near the sewing room. After asking to speak to Kanji, he then confronts him on the Flood Plains near the River, where Kanji reassures him that the accusations are false and the Emperor S. Link reaches level one.
At level 3 of the S. Link, the Protagonist has the option to encourage Kanji to make dolls for a young boy to help him with a girl he likes. This will also help Kanji to find the courage to sell said dolls at the textile shop his family owns. At the end of the Emperor S. Link (level 10), Kanji has a heart-to-heart talk at the Dojima residence where it is revealed about the complete reason for his sexuality confusion and how he has resolved it within himself—to do everything 100% and that he’s accepted completely his hobbies. He gives the Protagonist a cute phone strap and his Persona evolves to Rokuten Maou. He even teases that he’s going to start a puppet-making class that is to be held in his senpai’s room.
Abilities: Kanji can use his Persona, Rokuten-Maoh, with his lightning-based attacks to inflict damage to enemies or buff allies for three turns in battle. He is a tall, strong and athletically built teen who is used to street fights, as his battle style severely reflects. He uses what are literally found items as weapons, such as a school desk (his gag weapon) or the shield one finds after defeating the special boss in his bath house dungeon.
First Person: [Accidental Video]
[The young man was sitting in at his table, skeins of many different coloured yarn surrounding him as his hands moved with the ease of one used to the work he was doing. His face, not always the prettiest on a good day, was screwed up in concentration as he worked and talked to himself.]
Knit one row. Perl one row. Skip the last two stitches. Repeat.
I dunno who thought these directions were hard, but I swear this’s gotta be the easiest project out of the ones I’ve started since I got here. By the time I’m done, I’ll have the cutest damn hat and scarf in this entire fucked up city. Yep.
[He puts his yarn and needles down to examine the obvious-to-him hat better.]
If I use green here, I bet Chie-senpai would like it. And an orange one for Yosuke-senpai. I dunno about Sanada or that Labrys girl. Maybe I’ll ask around.
[He looks over and it’s obvious from the way his grey eyes widen that he didn’t know the watch was on. Especially when his cheeks start to turn a bright red before the watch is closed suddenly.]
Third Person: One of Kanji’s favourite things to do in the entire universe was to use his hands. Whether that was to sit down and create tiny, adorable masterpieces or bashing in the faces of Shadows in the TV world with his friends, Kanji was happiest when he was busy doing something. This sitting around and waiting for things to happen was for someone else.
Not that he was gonna go out and pledge himself for the stupid patrol force either. (Well, he wouldn’t do it on his own, but if Yosuke or Senpai suggested they do it, he might. Eh, that was a different story though.)
Nope, Kanji, after finding out he could use his Persona here in this strange world, went out to find and fight the crazy monsters in that were getting closer and closer to the residential parts of the city. It gave him something to do. Something productive. It kept his mind off of what he was missing back home, who he missed. If he was fighting with his body, mind and spirit, he was so exhausted by the time he got back to the house that he just dropped right to sleep after a meal and shower.
He wasn’t stupid. He knew it couldn’t last as a distraction for much longer, but he’d take advantage of it while he could. That was the smart thing to do, right?
