[CANON] Rory Williams || Doctor Who || No Reserve || 2 of 3

Personality:
Much like other Companions to the Doctor, Rory defies the mass human instinct to cower or accept what is going on around him, and will fight for humanity’s future when push comes to shove. Even before he properly met the Doctor in The Eleventh Hour, he was observing and investigating the behavior of Prisoner Zero, not even knowing what he was getting himself into.

What sets him apart from the others is that he isn’t as willing to let the Doctor get away with being the way he is. Rory is introduced as a skeptic and somewhat antagonistic of the Doctor, such as ruining the “bigger on the inside” moment and the flashlight measuring contest. As things go on, even as he warms up to the strange spaceman, Rory continues to roll his eyes and make sarcastic comments under his breath at the Doctor’s expense. The two come to an understanding in The Pandorica Opens-The Big Bang when Rory punches the Doctor in anger, proving it was really him. After that adventure, and his and Amy’s wedding, the two appear to have become closer though still snipe at each other. Just because the Doctor is his friend doesn’t mean that he’s going to be spared from any snark.

What Rory really wants is to live a nice quiet normal peaceful life with Amy. After first meeting the Doctor he fights desperately to make himself stand out to her over the raggedy man, trying to make sure he doesn’t get overshadowed and pushed out. He’s aware of how plain he is in comparison, and his conceptualization of an ideal life as shown in Amy’s Choice is rather dull. When their trips with the Doctor became more periodic rather than nonstop, he still tries to maintain a normal life to keep himself and Amy grounded.

Rory is completely devoted to Amy and would do anything for her, at first following like a puppy desperate for attention. He joins them in the TARDIS and gives the Doctor the benefit of the doubt because she asks. He gets into a swordfight with a “vampire” with a broomstick and nearly gets himself killed while showing off. However it is an act to protect the Doctor that actually gets him killed in The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood, and his dying concerns are still to the safety of Amy.

It is when he returns shortly after as one of the Plastic Romans that he makes a major change. Faced with the fact that he nearly killed Amy, he vows to take her protection into his own hands. Rather than follow the Doctor and take the short way to the future to enact their plan, Rory sits with the Pandorica for nearly two thousand years, protecting it with a body that is not designed to survive that long. For a long time, this version of himself remains dormant for the sake of his own temporal sanity, but when Amy is once again taken captive in A Good Man Goes to War, Rory marches into the command center of a Cybership and lays down an ultimatum for information, not allowing the panic to seep in until he was back on the TARDIS. His devotion to her is such that when he’s faced with having to choose between two versions of her from divergent timelines, he is unable to willingly sacrifice one, even for the sake of everyone.

He remains a bit of a dork as well. Even after finding his courage as the Last Centurion, there are frequent moments where Rory fumbles around the oddities in their life. An Ood on the loo is not something you expect to see in the morning. Or how he breaks down crying when reuniting with Amy and his daughter in A Good Man Goes to War, “Oh God, I was gonna be cool. I wanted to be cool, look at me…”. And then of course there was the moment in his honeymoon where he was dressed up in a halloween Centurion costume.

What Rory is, as with many Doctors, but standing out in his own ways is an example of what humanity can be when they fight tooth and nail to protect the things closest to their heart. Rory is a joke character that grows into a champion of love and earnestness.

Abilities: Rory is a certified nurse, something he’s had time to work on around all of his adventures in space and time. He also has the knowledge and confidence, particularly combat skills, which he can draw from thanks to his time as the Last Centurion, but he doesn’t like to as it involves opening his mind up to an alternate timeline and it’s a bit of a headache.
