CHARACTER
Name: Loki Laufeyson
Canon: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Timeline: Right after the Avengers movie
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: NA

Personality:

The most apt explanation of Loki’s character is when Bruce Banner in the recent Avengers film said that his mind was “…a box of cats. You can smell crazy on him.” That is exactly what he is. Crazy and slightly megalomaniac with a healthy sprinkling of daddy issues and sibling envy. Of course finding out that you are not only adopted, but are one of the very creatures your society demonizes and then having your dad fall asleep in the middle of the “You’re adopted, but we still love you” talk probably had something to do with at least 3/4s of that description.

Loki has a long memory and is defiantly the type to hold a grudge. He remembers everything everyone has done to him, real or imagined, and he will eventually get even. This can be a driving force in his schemes. Thor notes in the Avengers that Loki most likely took Eric Selvig not only because of his scientific knowledge, but also because of his friendship with Thor. Thor is the extreme case where we see how far Loki is willing to go to make those he believes have wronged him pay.

Everything he does in the two movies he has appeared in he believes is good and justified. In Thor destroying an entire world was his way of proving to his father that he was a capable son, that he could protect Asgard as well as, if not better, than his brother. When he is trying to take over earth during the Avengers he constantly insists it is for mankind’s good, to save them from themselves. Of course his latent need to one-up Thor also plays into his need to prove he could be a good ruler.

So, while he is not a meaningless malignity, he is far from a good guy. He has no problem tearing down those who get in his way. He will use his talents in magic and his silver tongue to get whatever he needs, pesky morals need not apply. His actions always have motive behind them, even if the motive is ‘It sounded fun’ or ‘Because I wanted to’. As an example, when he is giving a reason for letting the Frost Giants into the weapons vault in Thor he claims that it "was just a bit of fun", citing keeping Thor off the throne as almost an after thought.
There is a chance his more evil intentions could mellow out if someone were able to get through to him that he has little, if nothing to actually be vengeful about, but that would take a very special person who would have to take the time to both win over his trust and also get to a point where he sees them as enough of an equal to take their advice. Loki is prideful, though, and does not accept equals readily (and betters never). While that is hard, earning his trust is even more challenging. A person must show both independence, intelligence, and strength. He does not want to feel like he is having to baby sit those he would tentatively call friends. It is not a simple situation of trusting a person and them trusting you back. No, Loki actually thinks those that trust him to soon are fools, and fools can only serve him in the lowest positions.
