CHARACTER Name: Nepeta Leijon Canon: Homestuck Timeline: After she attacks Gamzee and is murdered by him. If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A
Personality:
Your name is NEPETA LEIJON.
You live in a CAVE that is also a HIVE, but still mostly just a CAVE. You like to engage in FRIENDLY ROLE PLAYING, but not the DANGEROUS KIND. Never the DANGEROUS KIND. It's TOO DANGEROUS! Too many of your good friends have gotten hurt that way.
Your daily routine is dangerous enough as it is. You prowl the wilderness for GREAT BEASTS, and stalk them and take them down with nothing but your SHARP CLAWS AND TEETH! You take them back to your cave and EAT THEM, and from time to time, WEAR THEIR PELTS FOR FUN. You like to paint WALL COMICS using blood and soot and ash, depicting EXCITING TALES FROM THE HUNT! And other goofy stories about you and your numerous pals. Your best pal of all is A LITTLE BOSSY, and people wonder why you even bother with him. But someone has to keep him pacified. If not you, then who? Everyone has an important job to do.
Your trolltag is arsenicCatnip and :33 < *your sp33ch precedes itself with the face of your lusus who is pawssibly the cutest and purrhaps the bestest kitty you have ever s33n!*
What will you do?
- Nepeta’s introduction page.
At first glance of this young female troll, we come to notice certain general aspects which quickly take us into a variety of associations. For example, the large, beady eyes and the 3 shaped mouth with a pair of peeking fangs quickly remind us of hundreds and hundreds of pictures and characters of adorable cats and other feline creatures we find on the Internet. This, added and complemented with more feline references, such as the large, cat-head shaped hat and the blue tail poking out of her jacket all add up to a character that immediately reminds us of the silly cat-girl personas and internet memes, not to mention the furry community. However, although these things are, in fact, referenced along her story as silly cracks and jokes to keep the audience entertained, one must look past this to fully understand and enjoy Nepeta’s whole character.
There are several sides of her personality to analyze in order to get a proper picture. Starting with the general picture, Nepeta is a cheerful young troll girl, often caught indulging in amusing activities, such as roleplaying with her friends throughout the story, or maintaining her Shipping Wall, which is literally a wall on which she keep track of ships between her and her group of friends, may they be true and confirmed, or possible, or simply desired. As a contrast, Nepeta enjoys other, different activities as well, such as hunting (which she does, using her own skills, much like a wild animal would), and wearing the pelts of her preys. This last part shows us how Nepeta isn’t simply a “cute little troll girl”, but also a strong, independent young lass who can take quite good care of herself, in the very least in terms of combat and defense.
As far as animalistic references go, Nepeta doesn’t simply find amusement in animal life; she lives as she is one of them, which, by itself, is a reference to her liking for roleplaying, in which she plays a two mouthed feline, reference to her Lusus, Pounce de Leon, to whom she shows great care and affinity, going as far as missing her once the troll’s session has moved along, made clear in a conversation with Rose, as Nepeta attempts to chat with Jaspersprite. Nepeta lives in a cave-like hive, and it’s quite clear that her tales of hunts are taken from personal experience, as we can see from the animal corpses, blood (which she uses to paint her walls) and cave drawings scattered around her respiteblock.
Despite her life in a cave and her feral indulgences, Nepeta still maintains a healthy dose of personal relationship with the rest of the canon trolls, with some obvious preferences, but also some dislikes. The first one relationship we should look at is one of the main focuses in her story: Her relationship with Equius Zahhak, her moirail and what could be considered the major example of the pale flushed quadrant in the cannon plot. These two, despite their majorly contrasting personalities, show a major bond and great care, along with a deep mindset set on the responsibilities that moirails share: a guardianship, where a partner has to take care of the other. Equius is shown to be greatly protective of Nepeta, going as far as forcing her to play on his team in the troll’s Sgrub session, much to Nepeta’s frustration. Equius also shows to be majorly controlling of her and seems to put down her taste for roleplaying, but his fondness for the female troll is often shown and he tends to comply with her wishes at some points. Nepeta, on the other hand, call herself Equius’s pacifier, making it her job to calm down the violent Blueblood. She keeps up her playful demeanor with the “brutishly poised” troll, despite it not being well received at times (which also frustrates her at some points), but, as was mentioned before, she seems to be able to pacify Equius, and we are shown one of the closest bonds between characters, up until their very end, as shown by her shock in Equius’s murder and the manner in which she rashly attacks Gamzee with feelings of revenge. Nepeta shows strong connections with a number of other characters as well. Starting with Karkat Vantas, towards whom she seems to have romantic/flushed feelings for, as shown in her Shipping Wall, both the cave and the lab versions; she also expresses this, although vaguely, in her conversation with Jaspersprite. It is understood that Karkat is aware of these feelings, despite not returning them; however, he seems to have a fondness for her, although it does not surpass the spectrum of friendship. Nepeta does not seem to be aware of Karkat’s knowledge of her feelings, but still chooses not to tell him (or anyone else but Jaspersprite, for that matter), due to shyness, fear of rejection, and fear of “making someone jealous” (heavily pointing towards Terezi, Karkat’s matesprit at the time and Nepeta’s friend). Other trolls she shows a fondness for are Terezi, her roleplay partner with whom she seems to greatly enjoy playing with, Tavros, who attempts to roleplay with her as well and with who seem to share a pleasant friendship, and Aradia, with whom she seems to get along with and who’s entrance in the Medium Nepeta was in charge of. However, there are others who Nepeta does actively dislike. She expresses a dislike for Eridan, directly saying she doesn’t like him; she’s also apparently scared of Vriska, shown in her uncertainty when she attempts to roleplay with her and is taken back by the violent nature of Vriska’s animal persona. In a general sense, Nepeta is of a greatly caring nature, striking (or attempting) a positive relationship with most characters and keeping up a great sense of loyalty, but not as much as to blind her to certain aspects that she may not approve or enjoy, making her definitely not a naive character.
Despite all of these aspects – her strength, her independence, her strive to soothe her strong moirail, her attempt of revenge for his death – we are often reminded that Nepeta is also a young girl, shown through a delightful, almost cheerfully naive demeanor at times, in an attempt to keep up high spirits when others seem to be unable to.
Nepeta has, therefore, a well-rounded personality that can be alluring to others, granted they keep on her good side, lest they win a young, cute but worthy opponent.
