CHARACTER Name: Baelfire Canon: Once Upon A time Age: 14 Timeline: That moment when young Bae and his father were going to use the magic bean to go to a new world, one without magic, and Rumple… let him go. So Bae will be dropping in just after his papa betrayed him… If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A
Personality: Bae is self sacrificing, and far stronger than he will ever realize. He loves deeply, truly, and would do anything for the people who hold his heart. It is not hard to earn his love, to have a place in his heart. He loves easily but… it is also easy to hurt him.
He tries to be forgiving. He tries so hard to be forgiving. He fights to be an optimist, to see the best in people, but there is a core of hopelessness in him. Even at his young age, he wars with a certainty that things cannot ever get better. He fights to hope that he is wrong, he works hard to keep his belief in others, to push down his pain…
Given how isolated he has been, for so long… Bae isn’t always the best at making new friends. He wants to be… but he’s gotten so used to being rebuffed – either because people don’t want to play with the coward’s son, or because they fear playing with the dark one’s son – that he has walls built around his heart. Walls that crumble at the first touch of kindness. (In cannon, instead of coming to RC he winds up in London, with the Darlings. They give him food and a place to stay, and for that he loves them so much that he sacrifices himself for them, so at this cannon point he is in more or less that state of mind, eager for the first touch of kindness, but sure he’ll never get it)
Mostly, at this point… Bae wants his father. Not the “Dark One” that Rumple became, but his loving Papa. He doesn’t care if his father is a coward, not really, and keeps blaming himself for the rift that began between them. He was called to war and… he didn’t think about how hurt his father could be by his words…
He isn’t actually aware of it, but since getting conscripted to fight in the Ogre wars, Bae has had a thing about blame. Someone has to be wrong in any given conflict. It isn’t a conscious thought, he doesn’t choose who he thinks is wrong, but his brain clicks into victim/bully mode, and more and more he sees himself bouncing between victim and bully. He carries a lot of guilt, because the other alternative is anger, even though the reality of his situation is not so clear cut or well defined. He’s still a kid, and he is learning lessons about how badly things can go, even if they start with good intentions. And all mixed up in that is fear.
Oddly, he seems to fear the power he has more than the power his father does. Because he knows that if he gets angry with someone, his father will punish them, if someone makes him upset… his father will punish them. He feels like he has to hide his emotions about anyone other than himself and his father… for fear that his father will act on Bae’s emotions without giving himself a chance to settle what he wants to do. He fears how his father reacts to everything he says and does, so fears to say or do much of anything. He wants friends, but they’re all afraid of him, so he has no one to talk to, and more and more trying to talk to his papa is like trying to shout into a sealed off well. It goes nowhere and just leaves him sore and sorry.
Bae internalizes… a lot… as a result of this. He keeps his feelings locked inside, which leads to explosions at his father, explosions he almost always regrets after. After all… all of this was his fault in the first place…
