Right before Sebastian can kill him, William T. Spears appears and drags him by the hair to be disciplined for his crimes. The canon point is right after they return to the reaper world. If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A Personality: First and foremost, Grell is insane. While amiable, cheerful and flirtatious generally, he scrolls through emotions rapidly and is quick to intense and frightening fits of rage, violence, lust, sorrow, and affection. Always fancying himself an actor, emotions to him are more like an opportunity to make a dramatic spectacle of himself, rather than something he actually feels. Therefore, his over-reacting is legendary. He genuinely enjoys throwing tantrums, making scenes, and generally using his emotional outbursts to make himself the center of attention. Grell is quick to declare his love for anyone he deems worthy. Masochistic in nature, abuse and physical violence from the targets of his intense passion usually just encourages him. It's frequently unclear in his fits of passion if he is truly proclaiming affection or merely wants to antagonize, even to Grell himself. He likes to act as though his feelings are returned. Part of this is because he is a masochist, and he does genuinely get off being fought off and generally abused. The other part is because acting as though the fight is a love affair, Grell encourages further attention and abuse.
Grell feeds on attention, and will stop at nothing to get it. To him, attention is good no matter how negative a form it takes. In fact, he seems to prefer provoking negative reactions and even physical attacks from the people around him to any other form of interaction. He dearly loves to frighten people and make them uncomfortable. He's also capable of and even revels in gruesome acts of violence. He dearly loves all things red, especially blood.
While outwardly male, he refers to himself using female pronouns and enjoys thinking of himself as a woman. However, while he likes his long hair, makeup, and the occasional dressing up, Grell really makes no serious effort to present himself as anything other than a man. He’s very vain, and dearly loves his male body. He openly revels in the difference between his physical gender and his claims to femininity. He uses it to his advantage to provoke negative attention, make people uncomfortable regularly throughout the series. This makes him very different from a transgender woman. He’s a man with a fetish for cross dressing and gender switching, who uses that fetish to cause other’s distress and get attention. Grell, as we know, feeds on negative attention and conflict with others. (Side note: In Japanese gay culture, it is very common for gay men to refer to themselves and each other using female pronouns. I am aware Yana Toboso in a character “interview” she wrote, described Grell as wanting to have a sex change operation. In Japanese culture, the line between a transgender woman and a gay man is frequently confused. Statements like that are used to describe just how “gay” a male character is. She has also described him as a gay man more than she has described him as a transgender woman.) The only sincere emotion on the matter he shows is that he does genuinely lament not being able to carry children. He likes children, but they also make him uncomfortable. One reason for this could be because, as his job is a reaper in a time period when infant mortality and child deaths were common, the task of reaping children would be a common and distressing one. This discomfort combined with his short temper and tendency toward wild outbursts make him particularly bad with them.
Most of the targets for his wild romantic attentions are men, but he's flexible in the matter and can harbor romantic and sexual feelings for women. This, however, is rare. Most women he treats with jealousy and distain. When he does, it’s usually because he’s enjoying playing out some drama he’s concocted, and the woman is a part of the drama and has less to do with her personally.
Loyalty isn't something Grell is overly concerned with. He'll look out for number one. However, he is very vain, and is susceptible to flattery and tokens of affection, no matter how minor or insincere. In fact, even the smallest sign of approval seems to delight him. He seems to have no real qualms with letting himself be manipulated quite readily. Once motivated, Grell can be easily be made into a powerful, but ultimately unreliable ally.
He does have moments of lucidity, and he can be quite cunning and intelligent when he wants to be. He just doesn’t want to be. Generally, he’s not so mentally broken that he cannot function; he’s just broken enough so that he doesn’t care to. He’s a bit like the child who drops the plate and breaks it so he doesn’t have to do the dishes anymore. Therefore, it is never quite clear how much of his wild, mad persona is real insanity, and how much of it is acted for the benefit, or rather determent, of those around him. Notoriously self-absorbed, he can often be brutal or cruel even when he doesn’t intend to be.
It is the job of a shinigami to kill people when they are scheduled to die and harvest their souls. Therefore, Grell’s relationship with death is fairly skewed. For Grell, to kill a human would only be to reap them early. It wouldn’t have much significance. He sees human life as dirty and boring anyway, so he has no real respect for it.
His other interests include playing games, acting, theater, music, and the arts. He also enjoys photography. Grell does have an incredibly short attention span. So, his interests and hobbies tend to be passionate, but short lived.
Background: Grell Stucliff became a shinigami in the late 1700s. As a young shinigami, Grell was known for his vicious temper, unpredictable personality, and brutal violence. However, he was also known for his technical skill at collecting human souls and working with the cinematic records, the recording of a person’s life that plays out upon their death. This is dangerous work, and his gifts at handling it forces the shinigami HR to deal with him. On purely technical achievement, he holds one of the few AAA scores on record at Dispatch where he was trained and works. However, in spite of his impressive talent, his mental instability, emotional outbursts and brutality kept him from any kind of promotion. He stayed a rather low-level reaper. His original partner, the young shinigami who took the original exams with him, is William T. Spears. William is now a supervisor at dispatch. This doesn’t seem to bother Grell, who’s short attention span causes him to despise office work and paperwork, which he is almost always behind on.
As a young shinigami, Grell’s feminine affectations were absent. While he showed an interest in fancy dress and handsome men, he showed no interest in being female. It wasn’t until he got into a fight with William that he realized that he enjoyed being dominated. When he realized he enjoyed being beaten and dominated, he adopted feminine affectations to go with this new found desire. Grell appears to have mellowed somewhat through the years. While still unstable and violent, his more flamboyant and effeminate personality seems to have been cultivated over time. After the incident with "Madame Red" (Where he willingly became an accomplice and participant in the “Jack the Ripper” murders) he appears to have been professionally reprimanded and even demoted multiple times. William replaced his chainsaw scythe with scissors, something Grell greatly lamented. However, his originally modified scythe has been recovered.

Red… Red… Red…
If I have to find myself in a strange new place, is a little RED too much to ask for? Nothing at all here is red.
[He satisfies himself that it is working.]
Listen! Whoever is out there! I’ll have you know that you’ve kidnapped a REAPER! Now, what do you think of that? I know you’re all just DYING to correct your horrible, horrible mistake. So, I would say it’s to your advantage to fix this bloody mess, unless you want to find yourself AN ACTUAL BLOODY MESS!
Whatever you do to me, just know that my handsome William and my beloved Sebas-Chan will do ANYTHING to get me back. Do you hear me? Anything. I will be rescued. And when I am?
[He goes into a sing-song voice.] You’ll be sooo-ooo-ooo-rryyy!
Ah-ahn! Those handsome men, fighting against all odds to rescue their beautiful beloved! It’s too… too wonderful! Coming to snatch me from the arms of my cruel… inhuman… brutal… strong… dominating… masterful captors! Who without mercy even at this very moment are Ahh-ahn!! [Swooning in a fit of ecstasy, he falls onto the ground, out of frame.]
Um…
[His head pops up again, and he peers into the camera.]
Hey! Where are my brutal strong captors? What kind of a kiddy operation are you running here?
…
I hate this place already. Third Person: “They buried William in the old church yard, And Barbara there anigh him, And out of his grave grew a red, red rose, And out of hers, a briar.”
Grell sang pleasantly to himself. He didn’t remember where he’d heard the song, but it had love, death, and a red rose and a William in it. So, he liked it. He hopped lightly across a hopscotch court that only existed in his mind.
Grell was bored.
And that wasn’t altogether safe.
A tall, handsome man with dark hair and blue eyes walked past. He tucked his nose down, avoiding eye contact with the redhead. This might have deterred a normal person, but not Grell.
“Hey there! You! The HANDSOME one! The entire city looks like DEATH warmed over! Do you think you could help a poor maiden to safety? Once we’re settled by a nice red fire, I could show you how warm I can…”
The man began to walk faster, away from the red reaper.
“You! Come back here! Can’t you see that I’m in DISTRESS? I’m in need of assistance!”
Grell lay chase, and the man broke into a run. Shark-like teeth grind together, and the scream of an active chainsaw rips through the decaying street.
“HOW DARE YOU LEAVE ME HERE, WEAK AND INNOCENT AND HELPLESS! GET BACK HERE! I’M IN NEED OF A MAN TO SAVE ME NOW GET BACK HERE!”
