"Whoop! I love my job! Who cares if the clues I find are no good?"
Dick Gumshoe is a friendly detective who tends to address everyone as 'pal'. He can often act very mellow, but with his moments of hotheadedness whenever he gets excited about something. As a detective, he is not a particularly smart one and he is in fact prone to making mistakes or jumping to conclusions in his eagerness to carry out his duty. He has a poor attention to detail, which has often resulted in his testimonies being trampled upon in court, although this is often balanced out by the intellect of his usual superior, Miles Edgeworth. He still demonstrates an inflated sense of self-importance, sometimes describing his cross-examinations as clashes between rivals. Gumshoe is an unconventional cop in many ways. He's frightened at the sight of blood, and he also hates using guns. He seems to like guns as a symbol more than as the actual weapon it is (...he even thinks that letting a child hold a gun will cheer her up). This is all part of Gumshoe's childish and naive nature. This is also reflected in how he often seems to compare his job to the ideal images of cops portrayed in media. In particular, he takes glee whenever he gets to say 'lines' that cops often get to say on television, and he likens his friendship with Edgeworth to a friendship between a cop and a prosecutor on a soap opera he watches. He's also prone to odd tangents that further distract him in his investigations, such as wondering why "truer" and "beller" aren't words in the sense that "liar" is.
"Only Gumshoe would praise a door as something greater than himself…"
He's a long-suffering fellow, although he can often smile through his troubles. Gumshoe is used to living in poor conditions and so is somewhat of a glutton for punishment. This is partly because his pay has been continually cut for his competence issues, and he has even been temporarily fired from the force on at least two occasions. His poor pay has forced him to live on a diet of almost purely instant noodles, which he happens to have grown sick of. This gluttony for punishment also extends into his professional life. He can be subservient to a fault towards prosecutors like Miles Edgeworth and Franziska von Karma, even though the latter's whip makes him more miserable. Sometimes, he does what he can to avoid unpleasant confrontations, at the very least, such as when he uses the sound of Franziska's tracking device as a signal that he should get moving before he gets whipped. At times, he does complain and grumble about his conditions, but more commonly he seems to try to continue to be cheery and to find the silver lining in most situations. Even a little thing like being able to salt his noodles is something that can make Gumshoe's day.
"In the name of love, a man will soil himself silly."
Even though he is quite accident-prone, Gumshoe's primary strength is that he has a good heart underneath it all. Largely, this is shown through his dynamic with Miles Edgeworth. He dotes on the prosecutor, makes a habit of cleaning the office and is sensitive to a number of his needs, including his fear of earthquakes. At the same time, Gumshoe tends to see people as ideals and miss out on details, so there's a lot he doesn't truly understand about Edgeworth at the same time. He also can get sympathetic with the defense in a number of cases, and on different occasions he's put his job or his life on the line in order to help out Phoenix and Maya, even though they're enemies in the courtroom. He seems to get along well with kids because of his childish nature, and he can become protective of them, especially in the case of Kay Faraday. He even withstood a murder accusation once just in order to protect one of Kay's 'secrets', which simply was that she had technically violated one of her late father's instructions. Gumshoe might not be the best at what he does, but he'll always push himself to do what's right whenever he realizes what that is. Sometimes, he'll manage to come through in a pinch with just the right piece of evidence... or he'll end up crashing into a tree first.
Abilities: Gumshoe is an average human with a few skills to his name. He has all the training of a police detective, even if he's very sharp and almost never uses his gun. He can be resourceful and was able to build his own functioning bug detector when he was younger. He also seems to boast some carpentry skills, as shown in how quickly he was able to rebuild Dusky Bridge. ...He also can somehow recall the scientific names of random plants.
