CHARACTER
Name: Remus Lupin
Canon: Harry Potter
Timeline: In his early twenties, after Lily and James are killed and Sirius is sent to Azkaban.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A

Personality: Remus Lupin is a very tolerant, fair-minded and patient young man, and has retained an ability to see the good in everyone despite the prejudice and discrimination that he has been forced to endure thanks to his lycanthropy. He is a very forgiving person, always trying to keep his judgements until he knows every side of the story, and if proven wrong he will not fight to prove an incorrect point, but rather use the mistake to further his own knowledge. Unlike his school friends, he never partook in the bullying of those such as Severus Snape, but he also never stepped in to put a stop to it – something which he regretted in later life. He will always attempt to remain civil, even with people that he doesn’t really like, and it takes a great deal to push him to anger.

He was probably the most calm, mature member of the group of Marauders, even becoming a prefect in his fifth year, and possesses a near-uncanny ability to guess the thoughts of people around him. This is possibly down to enhanced senses thanks to his being a werewolf. He is also highly intelligent, knowing bits and pieces of general knowledge that become useful in unusual situations, and has a sense of humour that could be described as dry, but is most definitely not dulled by his tendency to play by the rules. He could prank with the best of them, and would say in his later life that Dumbledore’s hope that he could control his friends upon becoming a prefect was perhaps more than a little misguided.

Despite his outward good nature and the bravery that he will often display, Remus suffers with constant and deep-seated feelings of shame about his condition and fear of rejection thanks to people finding out what he is which can often push him into thinking he should back away from situations where he might have otherwise leapt in and defended someone, or stopped something from happening. Trust means a great deal to him and he will have to be sorely pressed to break it, feeling a great amount of guilt when he knows that he has.

He can at first come across as a timid, even nervous individual, but he’s more sure of himself than he seems. Sharp-witted and quick to retort to insults, Remus is in no way a pushover, though ‘passive’ would not be an inappropriate word to use to describe him.

First Person:

[It’s the train shuddering to a stop that wakes him, and he sits up with a start, an unpleasant, nervous twist clenching at his stomach and sending a wave of nausea through him.]

Oh my God.

[He first pinches himself, frowns, pinches himself harder, then lets out a slow sigh and gets to his feet, resting one hand against the window as he tries to peer out. There’s nothing visible past the station platform, save for what look to be soft coloured lights in the distance. Remus swallows, bites his lip, then straightens and gives his lapels a neatening tweak. Alright, Moony, let’s see what you’ve got yourself into now.

The first thing he does when he steps off the train is look for the moon. His eyes squint against the glow and just for a moment his stomach drops... but no. It’s close, but there are a few days yet. The chill in the air eats through his clothes and he pulls his jacket closer around himself, letting out a rough cough. There’s a weight in his pocket, something round and heavy, and he lifts it out, fumbling with cold-stiffened fingers. Ruby City will be greeted with the sight of a slightly confused-looking young man with deep shadows under his eyes, who licks his lips once before he speaks.

What’s this… Hello? Can anyone hear me?

Third Person:

The number of times that Remus Lupin had woken in a hospital bed numbered beyond counting. He didn’t like to think about it, especially not at times like this. The moment he opened his eyes it felt as if trolls were hammering on the insides of his skull, and he gave his state of consciousness away by quietly groaning and turning his head away from the light streaming in through the window. Someone muttered an apology in a low voice, and he grunted in response, relaxing as a screen was drawn between himself and the light.

Warm fingers closed around his, and his hand twitched. It was Sirius. He knew that much from the awkward throat-clearing and the sound of his breathing. Remus cracked one eye open. The other boy looked just as bad as he felt and he had to wonder, just for a moment and with a pang of guilt, what kinds of things his friend had needed to keep him from doing last night to have him looking as if he’d been put through a wringer.

"James--"

"We’re all fine."

Remus let out a huff of relief, his free hand feeling across his face for any cuts and bruises. He smiled, then, and shook his head. There weren’t any words for how much gratitude he felt towards his friends for the lengths they’d gone to in order to keep him company. One day he’d repay them. One day, he would.
