CHARACTER
Character Name: Portugal/Madalena Almeida
Canon: Hetalia
Timeline: Portugal, at this point, is only various concept sketches; we know the character exists but we don't know anything else, including gender since concept sketches of both genders have appeared. However, I am bringing Portugal in from the present day.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: Largely irrelevant; Portugal has no real reason to interact with Canada or Wales, so there's no reason for playercest.

Personality: Portugal, at first glance, appears to be a cheerful, slightly mischievous woman, and in large part this is true. She's a bit of a matchmaker when she's bored, so watch out for her to meddle in other people's relationships if she has nothing better to do. The majority of her people are Roman Catholic, and she herself is still devout, though she doubts that she has any chance of heaven should she die. This bleak opinion of herself is something she keeps well-hidden, however; as said above she tends to act happy.

She does, however, have a darker side. After all, she was once an empire, and while she tended to be a stern mistress rather than a cruel one, imperial ambitions require a degree of ruthlessness. Another example of this is during the Iberian Union (when Spain ruled Portugal), when she did her best to break up the personal part of the Hapsburg Union, i.e. Spain and Austria's marriage. Her goal in that case was the hope that a personal break would eventually affect politics, and that her brother would lose enough strength that she could be free again. It failed and her people's independence was finally achieved with French aid, but at the time it seemed like a good idea to her and she didn't care if someone got hurt in the process. Today, though, she has largely let go of this ruthless side – it can appear in extreme situations but it's rarely needed now. She's working on finding her identity in this modern world, after decades of dictatorial and Church control kept her firmly entrenched in older traditions.

Portugal also has a defiant side to her nature. As a female nation, she's often faced trouble from her leaders in a culture that historically placed women as lesser. This led, for example, to her disguising herself as a boy to fight in wars – particularly wars against her brother, Spain. Today it mostly shows up as a contrary side to her nature; she loves to argue and play devil's advocate. Sometimes she disagrees with someone or tells them no simply for the fun of riling them up or starting an argument.
