A note for CR AU applications
Ruby City does allow previous game history/CR to be brought over on a case by case basis. If you want to include this in your application please add additional sections for PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT and PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY beneath the Personality and Background/History sections.
In these additional sections we would like to see a brief outline of your character's previous game history and how it potentially impacted on and altered their canon personality.
{ [CANON] Draco Malfoy || Harry Potter || reserve || 3 of 3 }
Draco rose up, his body running on instinct. His hand found his wand as he did so and his arm flung out with his wand pointed dangerously at... nothing. His mouth was twisted open in a silent scream, sweat pouring off him.
Another nightmare. It took him a moment to settle down. He forced his grey eyes closed and dropped his wand onto the bed next to him. He lifted a shaky hand to push his pale blond hair up and out of his face. The remnants of the nightmare faded, but the oily feeling of the blackness and the hands the hands gripping at him lingered hauntingly, lingering as a haunting presence. He knew if he tried to return to sleep now he would only sink into the nightmare once more.
He kicked off the sheets that, through the thrashing, had tangled around his legs. Then he was up and out of bed, striding tensely across the cold marble floor, stalking past the the hearth, the glowing embers from earlier in the evening now dead, on to the french doors leading out onto the balcony. The cool autumn night chilled him, but still Draco pushed on and let the chilly air hit his bare torso and cool his skin.
He hated these night when he was here, in the Manor, forced to remember things best left in the past. Forced to relive his every wrong and horrid choice. It was nights like this when Draco almost wished he had been sentenced to Azkaban. With or without Dementors, he would have welcomed the insanity incarceration likely would have brought compared to this. But such thoughts only appeared briefly on nights like this, when he stood out on the balcony and lit up a cigarette; which his mother would lecture him for indulging in... if she ever caught him.
He smirked cruelly out toward the perfectly manicured landscape. The wizarding people cursed at him, said he got off lightly, tried to hex him, spoke of many ways in which he should have been punished. "Too bad they don't know my mind and this damn manor punishes me more than they ever could think of to wish on me." He took a slow drag of the cigarette and let it out in a silver cloud of smoke. "Then maybe they would be satisfied."
REVISION REQUESTED
While what you have is good, we don't feel that it adequately displays his full personality and his personal motives in relation to the experiences that he went through in his canon.
You may submit your revision at any time in the next two weeks, and if you have any questions please feel free to contact one of the mods.
Revised Personality
From a world much like the aristocracy of old, with pureblood supremacy a topic of conversation much harped upon, there was a very real need to associate with the right ‘type’ of people. Where your physical appearance was just as important as your knowledge, wealth and magical ability. To be able to flaunt possessing all four of such qualities was the epitome of a perfect Malfoy. As such, Draco Malfoy is a product of his raising and his environment. The son of a well-to-do, long standing family of wealth in the Wizarding World, he was raised as one would expect nobility to be. Drilled in protocol and etiquette since his early youth, Draco is never lost in any social situation. He affects an aloof demeanor with just a hint of approachability; a toned down version of his father, if you will.
This also lends itself to his mask of superiority, as if he holds a thought process pertaining toward it being his naturally given right to be ranked above his peers by the grace of the blood in his veins alone. It is his defense mechanism, one taught to him by his father, and one he will likely never be rid of. It protects him from the criticism around him, protects him as, much to his father's displeasure, Draco is sensitive to the thoughts and opinions of those around him. His constant need for approval made him so. This mask has been his saving grace many a time, and deeply ingrained habits such as these never truly fade away or break.
Beneath his mask of superiority is a young man who cares deeply when his trust and loyalty are given, though that is a rarity. Being in a position such as his, where his family hold wealth and power, it is too often in his childhood he found himself betrayed and learning these harsh lessons. That people, and children, lie. That trusting without it being earned is setting one up only for failure. And contrary to the popular belief that he is evil and lacking in proper morals, he does hold a firm grasp of ethics, and knows when things go too far.
This may not have always been so in his youth, as he followed along behind his father blindly, spouted his dogma as if gospel, berated and put down others as lesser than himself at nothing but a whim. Never taking credit for his mistakes, seeking the acceptance and attention of those around him through less than honest means. However, the war did much to open his eyes.
Draco went from being the vain and pompous git of Slytherin in school to quickly being changed in the unprotected world of Reality. Wealth and the purity of your blood became less important. It became important to, instead, protect your loved ones, your family, even at the cost of your own pride. Being as he entered into the Death Eaters in his final years at school, Draco was immersed into the darker, seedier side of the war. Where daily activities often included torture, murder, and plans of making the populace subservient to a madman.
The ‘good’ people may have seen atrocities, but it was nothing like what he witnessed and went through. Forced to watch and participate in the torture and murder of women and children. Witnessing as though he knew came through the manor to be tortured for information. Standing in a home no longer his own as his parents were subjected to ridicule and the constant threat of death should it suit the Dark Lord. Not to mention the heavy burden upon his shoulders of doing all of this without complaint lest he be the reason, the cause for his parents deaths.
Such things tore at the pureblood superiority, ripping it to shreds. This wasn’t superiority, the Dark Lord did not want the perfect life for purebloods. He wanted a massacre, he wanted to enslave the populace to him. It sickened Draco to his core… and made him wail with despair from deep within as he desperately sought an escape. But none could be found that did not lead to his parents death; for they were kept constantly at the Dark Lords side as insurance. It left Draco helpless and in a state of being he never wants to experience again.
There has simply no choice in the matter, it was do as you were told or become a broken puppet, since really death would have been a blessing. This means Draco has more than a few skeletons in his closet. He suffers from occasional night terrors and insomnia, and more often than not when he’s lost in thoughts he gets a look of anger on his face or looks as if at any moment he’ll break under the sheer weight of them. This leaves him alternating between moments of lethargy and depression, on to moments of extreme irritability from suppressed rage left over from being made to feel so very helpless during the war. Not to mention his general state of being; which is restless and needing to move and do things.
Then there is the onset of PTSD, undiagnosed. The paranoia, the hypervigilance, the inability to be within Malfoy Manor without experiencing strong flashbacks. He startles badly, reacting as if he is in immediate danger. This also links back to his insomnia and irritability. He has come to deal with this by first moving to a different Malfoy holding, and by means not exactly healthy sexually promiscuousness where he had not been before. He avoids social situations that put him into a packed room that would make him feel trapped, and an occasional overindulgence in alcohol.
Because of his irritability, Draco holds a hair-trigger temper. It easily flares up with sometimes little provocation, or through key triggers. Such as mocking him, his family and position. This has recently given him a ‘bad boy’ look in the papers as he was caught punching a man who verbally attacked his mother while he escorted her to lunch. Thus making his position as a ‘pardoned’ Death Eater more precarious. However, he is getting better at not lashing out... at least not first. For his mother, and for the memory of his mentor, he is trying. He is taking steps to learn how to keep his moments of irrational actions contained. Though he, so far, has not taken steps for magical help on the matter.
Thusly he is becoming more adept at thinking before speaking. Less inclined to hand out insults like they were free candies. He's slowly becoming a true adult, and gaining the control over his rash actions in the process. However, this is a work in progress, and this is only the beginning, his control isn't anywhere near perfect. He struggles with it everyday in his attempt to step out of his father’s shadow. Trying to become a better person. Trying to not repeat the wrongs of those who came before him. He learned a hard lesson in the war.
Another thing about Draco, is his haughty, arrogant attitude. It is all he knows. The expression of honest emotion is not something he knows and is comfortable with above showing anger. An emotional person, much to his father’s dislike, but if there was to be one emotion left relatively unrestrained his father rathered it be anger. Better to be seen as an angry person and feared instead of as weak. So his affectionate gestures are always reserved, especially in public to refrain from being seen as weak. Even in his sexual encounters he still holds back from completely enjoyment himself. He holds back on truly letting his emotions go, keeping it just for the act and release, refusing to allow himself to truly take comfort in another’s body. Stressed easily, his only real escape comes in the form of making potions. Taught by his mentor, they are his passion and now his only real connection back to the man who had held an important role within his life.
Severus Snape was a presence that held more importance than even Draco himself knew until it was too late to show the man any appreciation for it, and his loss did nothing to stem back the downfall he has started experiencing through the psychosis left after the war. Much like a favored uncle as a child, mentor in later years, he played a large part in Draco’s life that is now empty and felt keenly. However after the reading of Severus’ will and receiving just one heirloom bequeathed to him, Draco has found that his attempts at control have become ever so slightly easier to accomplish. Severus’ memory is by no means a miracle cure to his problems, but he helps.
Other than potions, Draco also has an interest in magical theory. So when he is not reading up on potions, he is reading up on the newest advances to spells. Being a social pariah as he is, working isn’t exactly a logical choice until things calm down in their world. As such there is much in the way of free time, and reading on these two subjects and brewing potions are the only pleasures he allows himself. He has to, or he feels he would be driven insane. Thankfully they are more than enough to occupy the majority of his time.
DECLINED
Our primary reason for this is that we feel that the personality section contains too much unsupported headcanon pertaining to traits which would impact heavily upon Draco's behaviour overall.
You may re-apply if you so choose in two weeks time. We wish you the best of luck in any future applications!
