Well from what's been in the show so far, Plagg is his own character with his specific wants/needs/desires nd can act relatively independently, at least when the Chat Noir miraculous is being worn/not activated (if it's taken off, a kwami goes back into the miraculous, as they do when the person uses it to transform.) When he is out and about he tends to stick close to Adrien (though he's got no problem in doing his own thing which has caused issues before) He's fairly aloof, and super cat-like, but he doesn't tend to go too far from Adrien for the most part, so it'd be rather rare to see them apart unless Plagg was feeling especially prickly. (or someone tempted him away, he's not always the one to think things through) Mostly because Hawkmoth is directly trying to steal the miraculous and by proxy the Kwami, so it's in his best interest to stick around. (I'm not sure how distance would affect being able to transform, I can only assume that Plagg would need to be in ear-shot for it to work) That's not to say that he might not go exploring in a new place without the threat of Hawkmoth over their head.
They can be fairly far from each other too (Tikki, another kwami in the series, is taken rather far from her miraculous-holder and doesn't seem to suffer any real ill effects)
