A note for CR AU applications
Ruby City does allow previous game history/CR to be brought over on a case by case basis. If you want to include this in your application please add additional sections for PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT and PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY beneath the Personality and Background/History sections.

In these additional sections we would like to see a brief outline of your character's previous game history and how it potentially impacted on and altered their canon personality.

Ah, what about the "First Person" sample post did I do wrong exactly? So I know better if I should be applying for another character in the future.

I accept the conditions and look ahead to let him join the City.

CHARACTER
Name: Nikola Tesla
Canon: Sanctuary
Timeline: End of Season Four
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: Not applicable.

Personality: Nikola Tesla is an immortal vampire, a result of experiments with the Source Blood that The Five (including James Watson and Helen Magnus) participated in at Oxford. For the better part of the following century, this fueled both his personality and his plans.

Tesla was, for most of the first three seasons, arrogant and convinced of his own genius - though in the latter case the creation of numerous technological marvels such as a cure for a super virus, the ability to artificially create vampires, and a shield to hide vampiric traits from the advanced technology of Hollow Earth. A firm believer in technology and progress, this also leads to a certain rashness in his character, willing to experiment first without consideration of consequences.

Early on, he appeared as a villain - isolation and his desire to resurrect the vampire race had pushed him closer to madness (as well as potentially not using the medication that controlled his bloodlust). This even led him to attack Helen, a woman he professed love for. But as their encounters progressed, and they found themselves arrayed against the Cabal, he became more of a problematic ally.

And despite his arrogance, and willingness to mock those he considers lesser, he still revealed traits of his better side - speaking highly of James Watson after his death, and helping John Druitt annihilate the Cabal after their actions led to the death of Helen's daughter.

In the third season, he lost and regained his vampiric powers (which it turned out he was quite attached to) - but two encounters with other vampires disappointed him immensely and removed his desire to restore the race. With these actions, he became more and more an ally.

By the end of the fourth season, he was a solid ally, though his impulsiveness and arrogance remained. They were mellowed by a degree of respect for his Sanctuary allies. In four years, his personality evolved from villain to impish problem/periodic ally, to somewhat altruistic. Likely this is the result of contact with Helen and the other members of the Sanctuary.

First Person:

[The view that swims into vision is a young-looking man, in an excellent, modern suit. He looks mildly curious, and significantly annoyed, at the change of circumstances]

So I found myself on a train. And you know, I haven't traveled by train since the late 1930s - so something has gone significantly wrong.

[He looks around for a moment, tsking quietly]

I'm afraid I'm going to have to do something terrible to whomever is behind this. [Here, he smiles] That part might be fun, but first I'm going to find out what makes this place tick.

[The smile becomes a grin, and he gestures at himself] Nikola Tesla, by the way. And I happen to be a genius - your system's days are limited.

Third Person:

With a bottle of wine uncorked by his side, Nikola Tesla created. There should have been a fanfare, he believed - some sort of ceremony to such things. But, he sighed to himself, the satisfaction of creating something new in the realm of technology was reward enough.

He toiled in the Sanctuary lab, a rare moment alone. He wondered what Helen and her little team were doing - something about...something, he hadn't really been paying attention. If this worked, he'd find a way to use Worth's temporal technology safely, and the magnitude of that potential achievement held his full attention.

He loved to create, to solve, to innovate - to draw together the gossamer threads of technology into something amazing. He sipped the wine - ah, a rather lovely Merlot - and...wait, perhaps - if he could combine parts of Worth's mechanisms with his own efforts at creating wireless electricity, he could potentially find a way to break through the barriers between worlds. He started to work anew, in another, more interesting direction.

He'd have to tell Helen about his idea - perhaps he'd bring her a bottle of wine tonight, suggesting they enjoy it together. He had persisted in his pursuit of her for years now, and he'd find his way to her heart eventually. Because if he was one thing other than brilliant, it was persistent. He grinned to himself, and worked on.

CHARACTER
Name:Bro Strider
Canon: Homestuck
Timeline: Act Four, after Bro helps Dave get to the Medium but prior to his fight with Jack.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: If Gamzee and Bro have to interact, it’ll probably be concerning Dave and take place off-screen. It will happen at some point, but not initially, as Bro would only intervene with the situation if it got serious enough; Dave’s at the age where he needs to man up, as far as Bro’s concerned.
unironicsmuppeteer: (sugoi)

Bro Strider | Homestuck | Reserved

[personal profile] unironicsmuppeteer 2012-05-05 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Because of limited screen time in canon, most of what there is to know about Bro Strider is found via Dave’s conversations. However, even in the limited time Bro is shown, a lot can be learnt about him from his actions alone. Bro is shown constantly testing Dave, whether it’s through sneaking up to place Lil’ Cal, his most prized puppet behind Dave when he’s not paying attention, creating really obvious pranks such as tricking Dave into pulling down the ladder to the attic, only to be smothered in a pile of puppet.

Despite coming off as an asshole who simply enjoys terrorizing his little brother/ectobiological son, Bro genuinely cares about Dave. It can easily be argued that all of these tests Bro puts Dave under is to make him a better combatant. For example, when Dave needed Bro’s Sburb cards, Bro had him strife for them. Even though Dave lost, Bro gave them to him.

Bro also exhibits characteristics of extreme bravery; he acts valiantly to gives Dave extra time when it is time to get to the Medium, and also fearlessly fights against Jack Noir on a couple of occasions, the latter ultimately leading to his death when Becq was prototyped and Jack Noir basically became invincible.

Apart from being a super cool ironic dude and an awesome brother to Dave, Bro also has some interests that, needless to say, cause him to stand out. His interest in anime is one of them; he constantly wears his pointy anime sunglasses to the point he would probably feel quite naked without them.

The biggest thing, however, is his possibly unhealthy obsession with puppets. His apartment is filled with them, in the most inconceivable places. Some of them play part in the websites he runs—one of which being a pornographic website involving puppets. Taking this at face value, one can easily assume he must enjoy this particular fetish himself—or he’s taking it to an extreme to be “ironic”—or he has no qualms about how he earns money. Or both. Regardless, Bro has no problem discussing things sexual in nature at the most inopportune times.

Bro Strider always does the best he can to look out for Dave. Lil’ Cal might be his best friend, but really, Dave is the only one who truly matters to him. Ever since Bro infant Dave came into Bro’s life, Dave’s been in the centre of it. He wants what’s best for his little brother, but Bro can only provide so much considering their circumstances.

He’s fiercely independent and prefers to do things his way, but when the time comes he is willing to take one for the team. Trust doesn’t particularly come easy for him, either. However, if Dave trusts someone, Bro is apt to as well. That doesn’t mean he won’t give Dave or any of his friends a hard time, though. Bro never misses out on an opportunity to terrorize his little bro.

One a side note, Bro is a bit of a slob, as is apparent in the visible parts of his apartment. However, it’s more likely than not organized chaos, just like the way he organises the files on his computer.
As far as his typing quick goes, Bro types in black courier without punctuation, with the exception of ending punctuation. Red text may be used for emphasis and comic sans for irony, as seen here, where he’s referencing Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff.

First Person:[There isn’t a particular reason why he hasn’t gone to sleep yet. Maybe he was just a little wired, but even after checking up on all his sites—and reading Dave’s newest update of Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff—he finds himself more bored and actually tired. That’s when he turns to gaming. Once he’s focused on one of his games while laying on the living room futon, it’s easier for him to slow down.

Before he knows it, actually, he’s fallen asleep on the futon with the gaming control on his chest. When he wakes, the morning sun is leaking through the living room window.]

hey bro.
are you awake
you need to be dont you have school

[When he gets no answer from Dave, Bro gets up and drags himself to Dave’s bedroom with Lil’ Cal in hand. Dave’s still fast asleep, curled up in his blankets. Regardless of if Dave has school or not, he can’t just be sleeping the day away.

Bro sets Lil’ Cal on Dave’s chest, so the puppet is looking directly down at the sleeping boy. After giving Dave a firm shake, he uses his stealth skills to quickly leave the room. Surely Dave will be awake soon now.]

Third Person: Bro knew the day was coming soon, the day he had spent the past thirteen years preparing Dave for. It was kind of ironic, in the worst way imaginable, that it was. He and Dave had a good thing going, with their sick beats and rap-offs. Bro had enjoyed every bit of it, every single moment. From the moment he first picked up Dave, Bro had known that he was something special.

Dave had grown into someone Bro could be proud of; the younger Strider brother showed so much potential in everything he pursued. He still didn’t stand a chance in strifes against Bro, but he never backed down, and he could certainly hold his own in the rap-offs. It was still crazy, how much time had gone by. No longer were the days when Bro needed to show Dave how wield a sword use a computer; for a thirteen-year-old, Dave was self-reliant.

Bro stood by Dave’s bedroom door for a moment, listening to talk to one of his online friends about…whatever. Bro wasn’t interested in what they were talking about; he was simply making sure Dave was doing alright.

Of course, Bro would never say that.

Striders don’t talk about feelings.

After several minutes, Bro made his presence known, leaning in the doorway. “Let’s go out for dinner tonight.” Striders don’t cook, either.

Dirk Strider | Homestuck | Reserved

[personal profile] thepuppetmaster 2012-05-05 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:

Although a definite show-off when it comes to the things he’s done – particularly making robots, Dirk doesn’t tend to overplay his personal thoughts and preferences. Like pre-Scratch Dave, Dirk favours irony, but in contrast to Dave does not pepper it with curses, preferring to lean more towards intellectual quips leading to him often coming off as obnoxious. Laid back by nature, he is very invested in the welfare and personal development of his friends, to the point that he will openly insult them (as he often does with Jake, ironically of course) in an effort to change their perceptions. He encourages his friend Jake to be more cynical and sceptical, thinking him too naïve, while at the same time criticising how distrustful Jane is. He will also encourage Jake to work things out for himself instead of relying on him for help, for example when he insists that Jake fight Brobot as a consequence of having wasted uranium.

Dirk’s dream self on Derse has been awake for years, but unlike Dave (who was unaware of his own conscious dream self), Dirk is fully aware and in control of his own. He has spent most of his conscious time on Derse in hiding, while looking out for Roxy’s sleepwalking dream self, and when he finally chose to reveal himself after a foiled assassination attempt by the Batterwitch, he did so in spectacular fashion, publically impaling the agent’s head on a spike and parading it through the streets of Derse. He has the ability to quickly switch between his normal and dream selves, and has been known to enjoy “legendary infinite showers”, presumably taken when he is focusing on his dream self.

He is a fan of horses, having many horse and pony themed posters in his bedroom, and also watches “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic”, claiming that it is purely for academic reasons. However, he will admit to liking Rainbow Dash, because ‘she is so spunky <3’. Despite this, he often makes fun of Jake’s apparent infatuation with the character Neytiri from Avatar, calling her a ‘gigantic shitty space furry’. Whether this observation can be taken ironically given Dirk’s already established love of anthropomorphic candy-coloured ponies is anybody’s guess.

Like his pre-scratch self, Bro Strider, Dirk has a big interest in smuppets and puppets in general. Lil’ Cal is his favourite puppet, and, Dirk claims, his best friend. His own older brother had been dead for well over a century before Dirk came along, though he had left the means for Dirk’s survival behind. While he idolises his bro, Jane believes that he is bitter about his successes with Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff. Dirk has a Hella Jeff tattoo, with jpeg artefacts, on his shoulder.

Illustrating his proficiency with robots and computer programming, Dirk is in possession of a home-made auto-responder which is designed to mimic his speech patterns, personality and typing style while he isn’t at his computer. The auto-responder is based on his thirteen year old self, and by the time he is fifteen still retains a 98% margin of accuracy (though this was reduced to 92% after some pressure from Jake). The auto-responder has implied that Dirk has a romantic interest in Jake, which would seem to be backed up by conversations that have been had between the two. Jake, however, seems to be utterly unaware of the fact.

First Person:

[He misses Jake.

Of course, Dirk would never outwardly admit to such a mess of tender feelings but the fact that he had spent the last half an hour slowly carving the initials J.E. into his desk with the sharp end of a compass would have given him away to anyone. When he finally realises what he was doing, he feels his stomach twist in alarm, and quickly scratches it out, then dumps a book on top of it]

You ain’t got time for this, Dirk.

[Picking up his glasses, he pushes them on, hiding sunset-orange eyes. Since he arrived in this place called Ruby City, everything has been messed up. The previous night he had found himself stalling in the middle of a quip, to Roxy of all people. Luckily for him she’d been far too drunk to notice, but it had brought to startling attention just how much he misses the buck-toothed, naïve almost-idiot.

Rather more than that he can’t help but wonder if Jake is able to manage by himself]

Third Person:

Dirk stored his katana back in his strife specibus and moved closer to look over the damage he’d done. The creature he’d been battling was still breathing, though from the amount of blood slowly spreading over the ground around it, it wouldn’t be for much longer. He kneeled down, sliding his glasses off and hooking them over the collar of his shirt.

There were beasts in this place that would have been nightmares even on Derse. He had to wonder, with an army of such things, could his long-dead bro have turned the tide of battle against the invading fish alien queen. He frowned. It wasn’t like anything he’d ever seen before. Even now, half dead, it was still glaring at him like it wanted to chew off his face.

He was merciful, and pulled a small, thin blade from his specibus, sliding it up into the soft part at the back of the creature’s skull. It shuddered, then fell still.

“Like someone took every damn nightmare a bro ever had and stuck it right here,” he muttered as he cleaned the blade off on the grass. The thing looked like a wolf, but gone all wrong, like it was trying to be a human and a horse at the same time. He was sure he’d seen it in a book, and though he couldn’t recall said book saying how to kill it, it seemed that spilling enough of its blood worked just fine. Dirk winced, and gripped his arm. Damn thing had managed to get out a fair amount of his own blood, too.

[OC] | Marius Eldritch

[personal profile] blooded_rosary 2012-05-06 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Appearance:

At six feet tall with a muscular, but slim build, Marius is not someone who is immediately intimidating. He has the appearance of a male of around thirty years of age, with dark, perpetually tousled hair and blue eyes. Despite this rather normal description, however, quite obviously appears as someone who is not quite human. He moves with a grace unseen in any mortal, almost seeming to glide rather than walk. His eyes easily give him away, the blue shade of his iris being far too bright and flecked with silver, as if someone had turned the colour saturation up too high. As a vampire, Marius has slightly elongated canine teeth, which can be lengthened when he needs to feed. Under normal circumstances they are barely noticeable.

Living as long as he has, Marius has learned the benefits of adapting to his surroundings and his clothing style reflects that. He would not be found decked out in the latest Armani fashions, but he is always smartly dressed in tailored trousers and smart-casual blazers with open-collared shirts. The vampire doesn’t dress to be noticed – but rather the opposite, for being noticed may lead to attention being drawn to parts of his appearance which are far less human-looking than his clothes. Perhaps unusually, around his neck he wears a small silver crucifix, and he keeps a rosary in his pocket at all times.

When nervous, Marius has gained the habit over the years of poking at his right canine tooth with the tip of his tongue, or biting his lip. He has a very refined way of speech, rarely using contractions such as ‘don’t’ or ‘can’t’, and will occasionally slip foreign words into his English when distracted. His accent is very rich, owing to his age and the number of places where he has lived, and despite being away from Italy for so long he retains a dominantly Italian twang.

Richard Armitage

[OC] | Marius Eldritch

[personal profile] blooded_rosary 2012-05-06 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:

As one might think for someone who has lived for so long, Marius is an eloquent and cultured man with a penchant for the aesthetically beautiful and a love of classical music. He is polite and charming sometimes to the point of irritation, and will stubbornly resist any attempted to push him towards anger, often resulting in the person attempting to annoy him giving up out of frustration long before the vampire’s temper takes hold. Marius will respond to most things with affability and is an inherently gentle character, perhaps a side effect of his vampirism – it is far easier to have people trust you when you treat them kindly, after all. However, he has not used this particular trait to that advantage for many years.

Marius is infinitely patient, preferring to allow things to happen as they will. He has spent many years simply watching the world change around him, and can pick up many things about a person simply through observation with almost Sherlock Holmes-like accuracy. His level of patience and attentiveness give him the ability to be meticulous about almost every part of his life, and to approach even the most difficult tasks with curiosity and calm determination. While he occasionally struggles to adjust to sudden changes, when placed in a situation that he knows nothing about he will endeavour to find out as much as he can about it, in order to make the best of what he has. There is very little that frightens him, but he doesn’t react to being startled very well.

His age, however, does come with its disadvantages. Marius has never quite got the hang of many developments in the modern world, and his increasing level of self-imposed isolation as his life has gone on has meant that there are some things that he is very unfamiliar with. Most kinds of technology, for example, elude him in terms of their functions.

Upon meeting him, if a person were to ask him immediately about his nature, he would reply honestly. Marius is under no illusions about what he is and would rather have someone know right away than find out later and accuse him of hiding it. If somebody is not going to be able to see past the fact that he’s a vampire, he would rather know right away than attempt to have any kind of friendship with them. If his nature is accepted and his friendship gained, he is incredibly loyal and can be safely depended upon to be there when needed, if his own situation allows it. He will sometimes joke about taking secrets to his grave, and will not break the trust of someone who has given it to him.

Far from the bloodthirsty creature that one might expect, Marius gives off the aura of a person who is very at peace with himself. He would credit this to his faith in God, something which left him for the first several centuries of his life but then came back in force and has sustained him since. It may seem odd for someone who reputedly has no soul to have such a strong belief in God, but for Marius, it is absolutely essential, and has kept him from losing faith in himself as the years continue to roll by. Marius is, however, far from being a pacifist. While he will not actively start fights, he will immediately defend himself if threatened, and will extend the same courtesy to any friends that he has.

World Information:

Vampires, or so Marius was told by his sire, have been in the world for as long as mortals themselves. First, as barely sentient creatures, little more than corpses, who would rise from the swamps and graveyards to prey upon the living in nearby villages, turning those who they fed on into monsters like them. Over time, they evolved into a species barely distinguishable from humans, but certainly more powerful.

Many of the vampires currently active in modern society are part of covens – loosely knit groups headed by a small number of ancients – but equally as a many choose to go it alone. Both paths have their benefits, and it is not unknown for vampires to move fluidly between covens,

Only a foolish vampire would reveal himself to the masses, and as such there are very strict rules about modern vampires turning mortals to their kind. Many do not survive the transformation, or do and become mad as a result, unable to come to terms with what they have been turned into. A vampire must never turn another mortal if they ask for it, and never one who has not yet finished developing physically.

History:

Born in the Roman Republic in 500BC, Marius was the youngest son of a wealthy family from whom he did not stand to inherit anything. This drove him to become bitter and disillusioned with his lot, and he left home to try his hand at adventure when he was in his early twenties. While roaming, he met a man named Aemilius, who took him under his wing and taught him things that he would need to know to make a living for himself. It was only six years later, when Marius reached the age of twenty eight, that Aemilius revealed to him that he was one of the walking dead – a vampire.

At first afraid, Marius soon became fascinated. He would allow his friend and master to feed upon him to save him from risking disturbing the local populations as they moved through the Republic, and they fell into a more intimate relationship despite Aemilius’ misgivings. It was this vampire, a creature who was reviled by so many, who taught Marius patience and kindness, and soon enough the anger and frustration that he had felt over the neglect given by his family all but evaporated, leaving only an acceptance of the way that things had to be.

Then, when Marius was thirty years old, he was mortally wounded defending Aemilius as he spent the day resting. It was nightfall when the vampire found him, almost dead, and he let him choose what he wished – to die peacefully, or to become immortal.

Marius chose the latter.

History (cont):

He remained in Aemilius’ company for some time, travelling ahead of the expanding Roman Empire into Gaul, which would one day become France. Here, they took on different names and lived amongst the locals, helping where they could and trading food for shelter. It was in the middle of the fourth century, living on the coast, that Marius lost track of his sire. Leaving only a note behind, Aemilius abandoned him, something which he would spend the next thousand years trying to understand. Without his friend and mentor, Marius began to lose grip on his nature, and left a trail of mourning families across the country as they found husbands, wives and children dead, the only mark on them two puncture marks on the throat, or a deep slit across the wrist. Marius, in the grips of apathy once again about his situation, did not think about the consequences of his actions, and rode the wave of Germanic invasion over to England in the early fifth century.

There, he continued his reckless way of life, until one day he passed a travelling preacher who immediately saw him for what he was. Rather than kill him immediately, as he had intended, Marius listened to him, and they talked long into the night. It was then that Marius turned to God, and it has been a faith that has remained with him for his entire life. He would later learn that the man’s name was Augustine, and though he would never set eyes on him again he would remain eternally thankful to the man who had brought him peace. With that peace, however, came a heavy guilt for the lives he had taken, and he vowed to spend the rest of his life atoning for the crimes he had committed.

Changing his name once again, Marius moved to Norway in the mid eighth century and watched the unfolding Viking invasions from the side of the aggressors. Christianity followed him to the Scandinavian country, and he found himself growing comfortable with the climate and the local people. It was here that he would begin his first true romantic relationship with a mortal, a young woman with hair like fire and eyes like emeralds. Despite knowing what he was, she remained with him until her death, and to this day Marius still mourns for her, remembering her as if it was only the previous day that he held her in his arms. He had not loved another mortal with that intensity since.

During the civil war spanning almost an hundred years, Marius kept mostly to himself and led a simple life in the more frigid lands of the north. He left the country and headed east, into Russia, some years before the Black Death would take its hold upon Norway and most of Europe. However, the situation that he found himself in upon entering Russia was not one which was much better. Though he had entered the country and found lodgings and acquaintances easily, finding the local people to be kind and welcoming to a stranger, it soon became clear that the country was in the grips of an invasion.

Though Marius did his best to move around and keep ahead or out of the war itself, it would occasionally, inevitably catch up with him. He saw Moscow and Vladimir burn, and listened in the inns and taverns as people spoke in fear of the hoard that had crushed the resistance in surrounding countries. Despite the Russians and Polovtsy – a Turkish tribe with whom they had been at war – putting aside their differences, they were no match for the Mongols, and as they spread Marius saw leaving the country as next to impossible, until the resistance began to rise. In 1378, when Moscow rose up and fought against the Mongols, winning the battle and giving the country a brief reprieve, Marius left, and travelled south into Romania.

History (cont):

In Romania, Marius found a peace from the wars and constant invasions that he had been witnessing for most of his life. Although the hierarchy of the country was something that he had not seen since his days in the Roman Republic, he adapted to fit in and with the wealth he had managed to accrue over his long life bought himself enough land to gain a title. He made certain to be a fair landlord, treating the peasants living on his land as fairly as he could without drawing attention and suspicion to himself. In the civil war in which the peasantry rose up to fight against the nobility (in part thanks to this heavily split system of rich and poor), Marius secretly supplied his own people with arms and supplies, and in their turn they left him alone and left his house undamaged.

He kept mostly to himself, leading a quiet life mostly isolated from outside news until the late 1400s, when Romania went to war against the Ottoman Empire. It was only a year before Marius left, and without a word, only leaving the people who had come to admire him to wonder where he might have gone.

Marius moved to Spain, arriving at the beginning of the Spanish Inquisition. A devout Catholic, Marius was safe from the forceful conversion of the Jews and Muslims living in the country. He avoided trouble for the most part, and it was in Spain that he once again found his sire, Aemilius, living in an isolated monastery. Recognising him immediately he confronted him about his abandonment, and they enjoyed a brief rekindling of their relationship. Aemilius explained to him that it had been too dangerous for two vampires to continue to travel together, and indeed they should not have remained together for as long as they had. Finally reaching a resolution, Aemilius and Marius parted again, but this time with a smile as Marius was allowed to say goodbye. He does not know where the older vampire went after that, or even if he still lives, but he likes to believe that he would know should his sire perish.

In 1645, despite his dislike for open water and tendency towards seasickness, Marius left Europe and headed west to America, curious about the things that the New World could offer. He found it to be much the same as the old one, and kept mostly to himself for the first century or more, until the start of the Revolutionary War. Drawn into the conflict, he fought on the side of the colonists, and once the war was over moved back to Europe, to the area of Prussia that would eventually become Germany.

Although saddened by the dissolution of Prussia in 1849, Marius removed himself from the general population as he found his need to feed greatly reduced by his age. Though he was aware of several wars going on during his time in Prussia he was mostly unaffected by them, only really regaining interest in the world towards the end of the First World War. Marius, who had seen enough time go by to know that it would not be over, waited and proved himself right with the onset of the Second World War in 1939. Horrified by a regime that condemned millions to death he became active in trying to evacuate as many of those targeted as possible, sending them in the directions of people that he knew could be trusted or keeping them safe within his own home. He turned his talents as a vampire to his advantage in convincing soldiers that there was no one in his home.

After the war ended, Marius spent a few years trying to assist several of the friends he had made in rebuilding their lives, only to find himself trapped in East Germany after its annexation by the Soviet Union. Behind the wall for forty years, he would say even now that they were the longest forty years of his life. Every day he would hear news of people being shot while attempting to escape, or being found dead after taking the arsenic pills that were freely available in any shop for those who could no longer take the oppression and poverty that living in east Berlin brought.

When the wall came down in November 1989, Marius was among the first to leave. He made his way across France and crossed the Channel to England, where he travelled around for a decade or so before finally settling down in Cornwall, setting himself up as a reclusive philanthropist and antiques dealer. He has lived quietly since.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths

Like many other vampires, even those newly turned, Marius is possessed of superhuman strength, speed, balance and agility. He has highly advanced senses, able to hear and see better than the average mortal, and holds a wealth of experience, both academic and military, due to his long life. Marius also has several talents (detailed in the next section) thanks to his vampiric nature.

Thanks to his age, he needs to feed very little – perhaps once or twice a year. This helps immensely in ‘fitting in’ with local human populations, though he still feels the want to feed, despite not needing to.

He finds it very easy to gain the trust of most people, as he is highly perceptive to verbal clues and physical tics that less observant people may miss.

Weaknesses

Silver will not hurt him if he touches it (nor will a crucifix, or garlic), but if it is introduced into his body in some way it causes serious damage. A silver dagger plunged into his heart would not kill him, but would put him into a coma-like state which he would not wake from until someone removed the dagger.

An ancient vampire such as Marius is not physically harmed by sunlight, but it does reduce his abilities to leave him about equal in strength and stamina to a human. It would be foolish to make the mistake of thinking him weak in this state, as he is still more than capable of defending himself, but he is harmed more easily and must wait until nightfall before his healing abilities properly kick in.

Fire will harm him easily, as well or better than it would harm a mortal, and any wounds caused by it would take rather longer to heal than any other.

Abilities:

The most obvious benefit of vampirism is that of immortality. Marius has not aged a day physically since he was first turned, though he has changed his hair and clothing as the years have gone by.

As a vampire, Marius heals quickly, with most wounds healing themselves within minutes. There is of course a limit to this, and very serious wounds will incapacitate him as well as any mortal. His healing abilities also do not work during the day, when he is out in sunlight, making him much easier to kill during those times.

His level of observation, as well as making it easier to judge people, also gives him an altered perception of time. When properly employed this ability can allow him to slow his own perception of how time is passing, making things seem many times slower. This does not, however, give him the ability to dodge bullets. He is not Neo, after all.

Being an ancient vampire grants Marius some more select talents, including those of invisibility and mesmerisation. They are both illusions, the former being a case of a very powerful suggestion being placed within the mind of the other to simply ignore him (making it more difficult in crowds, or on a very sunny day when his shadow is dark), and the latter a kind of hypnotism employed to bend others to his will.

First Person:

[Marius clutches his rosary tightly in his hand, feeling the wooden cross digging into his palm, as he looks up at the cathedral of Ruby City. There’s nothing holy about this place and he’s almost wary to go inside, but he swallows his concerns and pushes open the heavy door, fingers lingering on the deep scratch marks presumably caused by some creature from the ‘event’ that he had been told happened only days before his arrival to this place]

Avē Marīa, grātiā plēna, Dominus tēcum.

[The old words come naturally within such a setting, even one with so strange an aura as this. Dark things have happened here, he can sense that much, and the smell of blood lingers in the air even now from events long since past]

Benedicta tū in mulieribus, et benedictus frūctus ventris tuī, Iēsus.

[He reaches the chancel, beyond which he would normally expect to see an altar, but instead there is nothing. This in itself is unsettling. He draws a candle and a small box of matches from his pocket]

Sāncta Marīa, Māter Deī, ōrā prō nōbīs peccātōribus, nunc et in hōrā mortis nostrae.

[Placing the candle down, on the floor for the lack of anywhere else, he lights it, and smiles gently]

Āmēn.

Third Person:

“And, you understand, I have no comprehension of how something like this works.” Poring over said contraption, Marius carefully pulled out a small cog with his long fingers, and winced as something inside the thing creaked in protest. Quickly, he stepped back, then tapped the cog gently against his lower lip. Perhaps he should have employed someone to help him before he started taking a clock apart, but he could learn by doing, and he still remembered where everything went.

The small feline that he was engaged in conversation with simply blinked slowly at him, and he let out a long, slow sigh, rubbing one hand over his hair. When he had become immersed in dealing antiques he had been utterly ignorant of the kind of work it would involve, it had simply been a vocation that had called to him. Now, looking at the mass of cogs and delicate pieces of clockwork spread out over the tablecloth in front of him, he had to wonder if he had really made the right decision.

“Heavens help me,” he muttered, setting the cog down. He crossed himself and turned from the table, moments later hearing the unmistakeable sound of the clock falling apart. Marius closed his eyes, and lifted his eyes heavenwards. “… That is not funny…”
