APPLICATIONS

APPLICATIONS

Applications are processed weekly, every weekend. The cut-off time for the submission of applications is 11:59PST on Saturday.
✗ Before applying, please read the FAQ and Rules pages.
✗ Please submit your application with the journal you plan to use if you have one made already. If not, another journal is fine, but we prefer your intended journal so it makes for an easier time in granting access to the mod journal and the contacts page.
✗ For very long applications, we would ask you to please separate them into various comments so that they will not take up too much of the page.
✗ Please title your application as { [CANON/CANON OC/OC]CHARACTER NAME || Series Title || reserve/no reserve || X of X } in the subect header
IMPORTANT: Our application form was edited on September 07, 2015. Please use the revised form.
✗ If you are looking for an example of what an application should be like, please refer to the application here for an example of a canon character application, and here for an original character application.

A note for CR AU applications
Ruby City does allow previous game history/CR to be brought over on a case by case basis. If you want to include this in your application please add additional sections for PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT and PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY beneath the Personality and Background/History sections.

In these additional sections we would like to see a brief outline of your character's previous game history and how it potentially impacted on and altered their canon personality.

[personal profile] strikeoflightning 2013-11-21 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: At the beginning of the game, Lightning presents herself as a tough, no nonsense (and perhaps even callous) soldier. She seems to look at life as if every step/every meeting might lead to a battle. Because of said outlook, she knows that she (along with all of those around her) need to be prepared 24/7/365. If she is caught off-guard (or if her acquaintances are caught off-guard), the future, in her book, is grim indeed. (In fact, her strong feelings on being prepared/not showing weakness were the catalyst for summoning Odin.)

Yet, despite her strength, there is something almost childish about Lightning. While she does have strong ideals, she doesn't always hold her temper in check. In fact, she can be downright cruel when her buttons are pushed. And she is far too proud to come out and apologize, of course.

However, as the game progresses and more of her back-story is revealed, Lightning is shown to be a complicated woman. Underneath her cold resolve to never give into meaningless/useless emotion (and her bratty temper), "Lightning" is not as callous as she might seem. She does have softer feelings. At times, it seems like she faults herself for being weak in that regard. (Or perhaps she just becomes annoyed with herself for feeling softer/weaker emotions in the first place.)

But, when it comes to Serah especially, she can't help herself. In the few flashbacks we see of her interacting with her little sister - as well as her reaction to those memories in the present - Lightning shows a wider range of emotions. When Serah tells Lightning of her fate (that she is a l'Cie) as well as her desire to marry Snow, Lightning loses her temper and says some things that she seems to regret later. She realizes that she was too harsh to her sister and that she is the reason Serah ran away - this becomes especially apparent when Lightning too becomes a l'Cie.

Another situation where Lightning shows softer/more vulnerable emotions is when she is speaking to one of her superiors. Again, this memory is a flashback during the long journey she shares with Sazh, Hope, Snow, Vanille and, later, Fang. During said memory, one of her superiors compliments her and tells her to loosen up now and then and enjoy herself. Lightning seems caught off-guard by both actions and she looks quite young in this particular scene - though it's easy to tell that she looks up to the General and that she takes his words to heart.

Despite those scenes, Lightning retains her rock-solid facade. She doesn't know what Fate/Destiny/whatever has in store for her, but she sure as hell isn't going to lay down and take it. Now that she has been marked as a l'Cie, (the very group she had once hunted so ambitiously), she knows she can only rely on herself to save Serah from her terrible fate. When Hope comes to rely on her - in order to make himself stronger - all of the pressure builds up and becomes too much for her to handle. Her temper is set off and that is when (and why) she is able to Summon Odin.

Yet that burst of temper is a temporary thing and, as time passes, it's clear that she is even beginning to rely on and open up to her companions. Hope in particular seems to earn her affection rather than the contempt she showed him when they first crossed paths. By the end of the game, Lightning has grown damn fond of her companions and she vows to free Vanille and Fang from their crystallized fate too. In a way, that vow becomes her new Focus - especially since Serah is in good hands with Snow at the end of the game.

Thus, over the course of the game, Lightning matures and realizes that she can count on others and that there are others who are nearly as important to her as her sister in her life. Thanks to that realization, she softens and becomes less short-tempered. However she will always be a quick-witted soldier with a sharp tongue - especially if you happen to be her enemy. But her heart is in the right place and she is finally able to speak out and tell others when she needs help.

Background: From here to here is applicable.

Abilities: This covers them, but I will list them below too:

"Lightning majors in the Commando, Ravager and Medic roles. Compared to most of her companions she has high physical and magical attack stats (the second highest attack stat behind Fang, and tied for the second highest magic stat with Vanille), making her best role the Commando due effectively using both Attacks and Ruin spells, although her weapons give the lowest stat boosts. Lightning has low HP gain compared to the others and when everyone's stats are maxed out, only Hope will have less HP than her.

Magic-wise, Lightning is utilitarian, able to use all four elemental "-strike" attacks, all elemental magic to the "-Ra" rank, as well as Thundaga. Lightning's Full ATB Skill, Army of One, increases the target's stagger gauge based on the current chain count. She is a skilled offensive Synergist, learning all of the basic protection spells save Veil and learning the "En-" series of spells.

Despite her low HP, Lightning can be a good Sentinel, as she learns all of the role's Auto-Abilities, and when pairing the Elude ability with the Nimbletoe Boots, she can avoid a large amount of damage from enemies."

She can also summon an Eidolon named Odin:

"Lightning's Eidolon, Odin, is a large armored knight with a two-bladed sword joined at the hilt. In Gestalt Mode he transforms into the horse Sleipnir, which Lightning rides while wielding Odin's sword, Zantetsuken, split in two. When not in Gestalt Mode Odin uses a combination of Thunder based spells and physical attacks while acting as a Sentinel and drawing in enemy attacks. Lightning has multiple ways to help with both her Ravager role to boost the enemies' chain gauge, and her Commando role to keep the gauge high."

And her weapon of choice is her gun-blade, which is named Omega Weapon.

First Person: {Lightning stretches her arms over her head and breathes deep. After slumbering for so long - though it hadn't felt like a long time - she is enjoying being awake. Her dreams... They had felt so real. But, no. This is real. She is awake now and she needs to fulfill a promise she made so long ago.

The only problem is she has no idea where she is. Frowning and shaking her head, she picks up the strange device she had found at her feet and turns it on.}

I need - {No, that's not quite right. Try again.} I would like some answers. My name is Lightning. I was...asleep...for some time. I should be...

On Gran Pulse? {But that doesn't fit with her surroundings. At all.} Nothing looks familiar. I thought I would at least be able to find my way around.

I guess I was wrong. {Those words sting her pride and her tongue.} I'm going to have a look around, but I'll keep this with me. Call my name if you want my attention.

{She then tucks the device into a pocket and begins her search on foot, moving lightly and agilely over the terrain.}

Third Person: Her relief over Serah being freed from her crystal was a mixed feeling. On one hand, she felt like she could finally breathe, but on the other... Serah wasn't her only concern anymore. Fang and Vanille were at the forefront of her mind. They had sacrificed...everything...for this outcome. That had been pretty damn selfless. The least she could do was try to free them, right?

But that could wait. As Lightning held her little sister and assured - and reassured - herself that Serah was whole and in one piece, she forced herself to focus on what she needed to do. Serah deserved an apology. It was time. She had the words on the tip of her tongue...

"We have a wedding to plan."

That was...Snow. Serah was...

Engaged. Closing her eyes with a soft, sad smile, Lightning pulled Serah closer for just a moment, pressing her lips to her sister's forehead. For the first time, she was giving the happy couple her blessing. The moment she released the shorter girl, she knew Serah was no longer only hers. No, her baby sister was growing up. She didn't need a protective big sister anymore.

Oh she was proud, but it hurt like hell too.

That was the way it was supposed to be, right?

Right.
