APPLICATIONS

Applications are processed weekly, every weekend. The cut-off time for the submission of applications is 11:59PST on Saturday.
✗ Before applying, please read the FAQ and Rules pages.
✗ Please submit your application with the journal you plan to use if you have one made already. If not, another journal is fine, but we prefer your intended journal so it makes for an easier time in granting access to the mod journal and the contacts page.
✗ For very long applications, we would ask you to please separate them into various comments so that they will not take up too much of the page.
✗ Please title your application as { [CANON/CANON OC/OC]CHARACTER NAME || Series Title || reserve/no reserve || X of X } in the subect header
IMPORTANT: Our application form was edited on September 07, 2015. Please use the revised form.
✗ If you are looking for an example of what an application should be like, please refer to the application here for an example of a canon character application, and here for an original character application.

A note for CR AU applications
Ruby City does allow previous game history/CR to be brought over on a case by case basis. If you want to include this in your application please add additional sections for PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT and PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY beneath the Personality and Background/History sections.

In these additional sections we would like to see a brief outline of your character's previous game history and how it potentially impacted on and altered their canon personality.

[Canon] Billy Kaplan | Marvel 616 | Reserved | 1/3?

[personal profile] noassgardian 2015-01-28 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
CHARACTER
Name: Billy Kaplan
Canon: Marvel 616
Age: 17
Timeline: Young Avengers Vol 2/#15. right after leaving the New Years party.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A.

Personality: At first glance, Billy probably doesn't seem like anything more than a pretty typical (albeit nerdy) teenager. He loves comics, pop culture, mythology, and superheroes... to a really extreme level. He can toss out quotes from his favorite movies, recall details about shows, books, and really, the amount of knowledge he has about all things superhero is downright impressive. In short, he's a total fanboy and entirely shameless about the fact.

But that's not all there is to him.

Things aren't entirely easy for him. Both because of the aforementioned nerdiness and his sexuality, Billy has been a target of bullying in school. He never particularly fought back against it, not for a while, but at least he never let it change him either. Like he's said, he's never had a problem with being different from other people, it's just other people who have had a problem with it. So he took the abuse and just went on his way until a chance encounter with the Scarlet Witch (one of his favorite Avengers) and the desire to stand up for a stranger showed him how strong he could be.

It's that sense of right and wrong, that urge to protect others from things he'd been willing to endure himself, that sent him down the path to becoming a superhero. That, and well, who wouldn't want to be an Avenger? It meant getting to be exactly like the heroes he grew up admiring.

But it's not all entirely just living out a fanboy fantasy. Billy takes saving people seriously. He won't think twice about going into battle, no matter what the danger is, if it helps others. He's also got a very impressive protective instinct when it comes to his friend and family to the point where he'd rather die, if it meant it made things right for everyone else.

He has a very strict view of 'right' and 'wrong' to the point where he has been shown very unwilling to kill anyone and it's also been shown that it's extremely upsetting to think himself even capable of it, regardless of the reasons behind the desire.

And while he might idolize someone or be close with them, that doesn't mean Billy will hesitate to speak his mind when he believes he's right, whether it's the Avengers or his friends. In fact, he can be downright stubborn and impossible to sway once he's set his mind on something. This isn't always a good thing and it's gotten him in trouble in the past. Just because he thinks he's right doesn't mean he actually is after all.

And you might think that conviction means he's got all the confidence in the world, but he really doesn't. He's prone to blaming himself for his mistakes more than anyone else and he's nowhere near certain enough in his abilities.

How can you blame him though? He knows his magic is powerful and he doesn't always know how to control it. He's seen what can happen if you lose control from the Scarlet Witch and from his own experience. There's a very large part of him that fears that could be him if he's not very careful.

Overall, doubting himself is something he's got a talent for.

Besides that, Billy is mostly a genuinely friendly, nice guy. He can be talkative when the mood hits, especially about things he enjoys, and he's not above cracking a joke or two (though it can be tinged with sarcasm or rather self-deprecating at times). And like most teenagers, if he goes more than a minute without answering his texts, the world is probably ending (possibly literally). That said, he can be really cynical and sarcastic at times. If he's suspicious of someone, that friendliness tends to disappear as well. He won't hide it if he doesn't think someone is on their side and he won't bother to bite back on his less pleasant characteristics either. That said, if someone has earned his trust, he can warm up pretty fast.

On the downside, he's also got a tendency to withdraw and mope when things are going wrong. Actually, that's putting it mildly. He has been so depressed in the past that he's literally not wanted to move or talk to anyone around him. This is something that it seems he moves past with the help of Teddy, but he still has a tendency towards depression. His sense of self-preservation, as mentioned before, isn't always very impressive either. He's been shown to be downright suicidal at times as well, genuinely thinking it better to just end his life.

When nervous or in stressful situations, sarcasm is his go to, along with attempts to downplay his problems (or occasionally build them up if he thinks it can lighten the mood or distract from them).

He can also have a pretty impressively bad temper when he's worked up. He won't think things through before he says them and it ends up in bad foot-in-mouth syndrome more than occasionally. He can be pretty careless with his words when this happens and downright selfish, concerned only with how things might affect him. It's a pretty big flaw of his, focusing on how things affect him and not stopping to wonder how others might feel about it.

That said though, once he's cooled down or had it pointed out to him, he is quick to make amends or apologize. He's not a perfect person by any means, but he doesn't take pleasure in hurting people he loves either.

Touching on the family thing again, it's something that's important to Billy Kaplan. And boy, does he have a unique mess of one. He has the family he was born into, the Kaplans, that are extremely warm and supportive (and two annoying little brothers he mentions and probably helps take care of anyway, because that's what big brothers do). He's a good son and he respects his parents as much as any other teenager. He doesn't go out of his way to upset them or disobey them unless there's a good reason for it and he knows how lucky he has it. After all, how many other parents would not only accept their son is gay, but take in his boyfriend and treat him like one of the family without any hesitation?

Then he also has the Scarlet Witch, who is responsible for him and his (also annoying) twin brother, Tommy, being alive at all. He actually went out of his way to look for her, just because it was important for him to get to know his real mother and get answers that had been bugging him for a while.

You can't forget Teddy and all the other Young Avengers either, who might as well be family with as close as they all are.

Regardless of his flaws or mistakes, these are the people who are closest to Billy Kaplan and they're also the ones he would go to the ends of the earth and beyond for, if they needed it.

Abilities: Electrokinesis: Billy possesses the ability to manipulate and discharge energy as either lightning or electricity from his hands/body. He can also use this ability in conjunction with spells.

Chaos Magic: Then there's the Chaos Magic, which was passed down by his mother, the Scarlet Witch. While there are a few spells he can cast without speaking it, most of them, he has to state the effect or action he wants to happen ("IwanthimtobeokayIwanthimtobeokay", etc.). He knows no standard spells and mostly just improvises. Stress and reluctance can also affect his ability to cast spells and they can be significantly stronger if his emotions are particularly strong. He can also enhance others with his spells for some period of time.

He's been seen to use spells involving enhanced strength, sensing others, levitation, telepathy, astral projection, illusions, and teleportation.

It's uncertain how far Billy can teleport himself and others and his healing spells depend on how much he wishes to heal the person he's focusing on.

Flight is also something he can do without vocalizing a spell, both for himself and others.

Unfortunately, Billy's magic has a drawback. If he can't hear the spell, then he can't cast it. If he ties too much of himself into a spell, he also has a problem with exhausting himself and not being able to perform magic for a while.

First Person: Network post from the Tartarus Experiment

Third Person: [This is also reused from my Tartarus application. If you would rather see other examples/have me write another, this can be done easily!]
Billy had a sinking feeling in his stomach as he started walking. The wounds on his hand ached and stung dully. It was still bleeding, he knew that. He just didn't care much at the moment when everything else was falling down around him. He needed to get to town and figure out what to do next, where to go next. He didn't have the option of letting himself be overwhelmed with all the weird and terrible things he'd heard yet.

But everyone on the network said getting back home was hopeless. They said it was hopeless.

That word was repeating in his head and he felt lost. That meant he wasn't getting back to Teddy, to his friends, to his parents. They said no one would notice he was missing, but what if they did? They would all be so worried. And if they didn't? It still meant Billy would be here missing them. He was still here alone.

But he wouldn't wish this on any of them either, not with the things he'd heard. Torture and monsters and things nightmares are made out of. It's not a place for anybody.

Except he's here, along with so many others, and it's apparently to be punished. He looked down at his hand, at the mark just barely visible beneath the blood that's drying on his skin. He wanted to wake up, but no matter how many times he repeated it to himself, it didn't happen. His magic might not be entirely gone here, but the spells he really wanted to cast were useless.

Like how many of his other spells, really? The ones that he really wanted anyway.

There's a moment where he thinks he could try it again, he could try to cast a spell to be a better person. How many times had he in the past and it always failed, right? Ending up here just sort of reinforced all that.

Billy Kaplan wasn't a better person even after all he had gone through and tried to overcome. He apparently wasn't even a good person.

And just when he thought things might actually be okay.
