A note for CR AU applications
Ruby City does allow previous game history/CR to be brought over on a case by case basis. If you want to include this in your application please add additional sections for PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT and PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY beneath the Personality and Background/History sections.
In these additional sections we would like to see a brief outline of your character's previous game history and how it potentially impacted on and altered their canon personality.
Re: [ The Signless || Homestuck || Reserve || 2 of 3
He was born into an Alternia ruled by blood color and violence, where those higher in the Hemospectrum would suppress those below them, and where, at the top, sat the Condesce , who watched and instigated this sort of behavior. Signless tried to change these ideals and insert the idea of peace and equality into their society, ultimately failing, having his voice stifled, his hope broken and his life taken, but never completely erasing his influence.
His story starts at the beginning, when Signless was born in the Brooding Caverns as any other troll (although, according to what is told to us in canon, Signless is actually a paradox clone of himself). However, Signless was born a mutant: a troll of bright, candy red blood (visible as the grubs’ bodies share the same color as their blood), something not fitting in the traditional Hemospectrum. Mutant trolls were something unheard of, as there were no lusii of the same blood color to raise them, nor was there even a symbol assigned to said color (which is the reason behind his title), leaving the youngling set to die.
In comes the troll known as The Dolorosa: as a jade blood, she was set to work in the brooding caverns to tend to the Mother Grub (a large, monstrous creature that gives birth to all trolls). Taking pity on the youngling, she took Signless and escaped the Caverns, raising him as her own, becoming the first “mother” of Alternia.
They lived in secret, as any knowledge of his existence and of her escape would definitely result in slavery or execution. In time, proof of his blood color would become evident, as happened to every troll (as trolls are first born with gray irises, which fill with their blood color as they grow older).
At some point of his life, Signless began having visions of a peaceful Alternia. These memories were, in fact, remains of his Pre-Scratch version, which actually lived in such positive environment. It was so alluring, so much different than the current state of their world, that Signless could not help but to wish such a change could happen. Motivated by such, Signless sought to spread ideals of love, acceptance and equality throughout Alternia, travelling and influencing minds throughout his years.
Dolorosa accompanied the young troll, becoming his first follower. During his travels, he gathered more followers, The Psiionic and The Disciple being of special mention.
Thanks to Signless’s influence, The Psiionic broke free from the life of slavery assigned to those of yellow blood such as him, seeking to help and and accompany his new friend on his travels instead.
The Disciple, however, became more than just a follower. She, like the other two, accompanied him, but also kept a record of all of his teachings and seemed to be the most attentive of all. The Signless was aware of such attention, and, eventually, they became romantically involved.
Their relationship is said to be a special one, another mark of the Signless’s untraditional lifestyle. While trolls keep their relationships according to the set concept of Quadrants, the relationship between Signless and Disciple is told to have “transcended” them, being safe to assume that it was closer to the human concept of love.
With these three by his side, Signles kept up his worldwide travels, speaking against violence and suppression, and for equality and love for trolls of all kinds. His ideals would reach the ears of those who suffered by the hands of the Highbloods, leading then into a revolt, but they would also reach to those of higher power.
Unfortunately, this did not end with good results. Having stirred so much attention, Signless and his group were captured, him being sentenced to torture and death, his piers being sent to slavery, with the exception of the Disciple, who was spared and lived the remainder of her life isolated, living in caves and mourning Signless’s passing, writing his teachings on the walls.
Just before his execution, Signless still shared one last word with the world. With his spirit finally broken, his love for the trolls of Alternia and his hope of change gave way into anger and hatred, which he expressed through his final sermon, the Vast Expletive.
As he passed away, he became known as The Sufferer, and finally gained a symbol, based on the shackles that held him during his final moments.
Trolls were forbidden of mentioning him and the revolt, even in personal records. However, his influence was never truly erased, as centuries after, his teachings would lead to another revolt against the Highbloods, led by The Summoner, which would end with Alternia being populated only by young trolls, having the adults been banished to space, as per orders of Her Imperious Condescension, serving her in the conquering of new planets.
Like so, the story of The Sufferer is known all throughout their planet, and is a vital part of the shaping of their society, but is mostly regarded as a myth.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strenghts
-Physical: As far as physical strengths, one can count the higher endurance, not only as a trait of his kin, but also to keep him protected as he travels great distances and escapes the dangers of being a mutant in an already violent society. He also has improved vision in the dark, as compared to a human, due to trolls’ nocturnal nature.
-Psychological: A developed capability to think and ponder about problems and finding solutions, gained thanks to his distaste of violence. He’s also a great user of spoken word, carefully choosing what to say and how to say it, managing to influence minds.
-Emotional: Patience is his biggest virtue, withstanding taunts and general unruly behavior with calm and poise. He is also calm and kind, easily gaining the favor of others.
Weaknesses
-Physical: Having been rescued from the Brooding Caverns, most of his physical battle abilities are taught by Dolorosa or self-taught; together with the fact that he avoids violence, his fighting skills are not as highly developed as most trolls.
-Psychological/Emotional: He’s incredibly protective of his values of equality and fairness, so he’s more easily angered when the situation is unfair and/or victimizes anyone, specially someone weaker than the other party. He also might become disgruntled if someone continuously steps on his ideals.
He also will easily carry everyone else’s problems on his shoulders, but will not as easily share his own, along as easily getting feelings of gloom when pondering about the limit of his own actions.
Abilities: As a troll, Signless possesses a number of abilities that assure his survival on a planet so struck with violence as Alternia. He possesses the necessary endurance to withstand battle conditions, even despite frowning upon fighting in itself. It is a needed trait, especially when we take to account that he spent almost his entire life travelling on what would sometimes be harsh and/or dangerous conditions.
Despite not having skipped a stage usually required by all trolls when young – namely the dangerous trials they must go through to make their way out of the Brooding Caverns – Signless had to learn to battle in order to survive conflict as well. This he had the privilege to learn from the Dolorosa as she raised him, couple with independent training. His weapon of choice is the sickle, which he keeps tucked away in his strife specibus, choosing to only handle it when it is truly necessary.
Besides the ones mentioned before, there are other traits common to his kin, such as improved night vision, subsequent from their nature as nocturnal creatures. Also countable are traits such as heightened hearing and sense of smell, slightly more animal-like traits achieved through necessary evolution.
Another noticeable ability is his developed eloquence. Most trolls seem to invest on direct battling, as is the influence of their society for hundreds and hundreds of years, but Signless, being a peacekeeper, invests greatly in the spoken word. He managed to influence and change the opinion of a great part of the troll population, giving way to a revolt of values. This is an ability in which Signless invests more than the physical ones.
Re: [ The Signless || Homestuck || Reserve || 3 of 3
The Dolorosa raised him ever since he was a grub, and became the first follower of his ideals. Considering that the idea of an adult troll raising another troll since birth was completely unheard of, Dolorosa is commonly seen as the first and only “mother” in Alternia. It can be assumed that that is how Signless saw her, even with the lack of term, and looked up to her with fondness and love.
The Disciple was another one of his followers, and his closest one. She kept records of his teachings and hung on his every word, and, eventually, they became romantically involved. Despite the concept of troll’s relationships being somewhat strict and divided in specific types, Disciple’s and Signless’s is described as surpassing all the quadrants, then being safe to assume that their relationship is closer to a human’s concept of love.
The Psiionic was another of his followers. He was influenced by Signless’s ideals to break away from slavery, a life that would be commonly assigned to those of his blood color. And he became part of the small group, participating in their travels.
These three went on travels across Alternia, sharing Signless’s doctrine to other trolls, in hopes of spearing a message of peace and love among all trolls of all blood colors.
Besides personal relationships, Signless does have a certain connection with Her Imperious Condescension, as he seeks to spread ideals of peace and equality through Alternia, therefor being against her tyrannous rule that drove the planet into such a state.
Finally, we have Karkat Vantas, Signless descendant (technically his clone, through ectobiology). Karkat is thought to have inherited Signless’s anger upon his execution. However, they lived years (possibly centuries) apart and Signless has no idea of Karkat’s existence.
First Person: [The train comes to a screeching halt in its tracks, finally ending the line of smoke traced since its mysterious origin. The carriage doors open, giving way for passengers to step onto the platform. One would almost think that a train like that would let out a flood of people, but the city’s members knew better.
He calmly steps out onto the platform, looking around in silence.]
Hello?
[No response.
He takes a few steps, raising his hands to idly tug at his hood so to cover himself more. By his experience, you’re never too careful when in strange territory.
Especially when you have no idea how or why you got there.
He figures someone had captured him while he rested. But how had he not woken up? And how had none of his piers noticed the abduction?]
Is anyone there? Make yourself noticed.
[The lack of response was slightly unnerving, but one has to stay calm if they want to get proper results.]
I don’t know who or what has brought me here, but I would like to get some answers. I’m sure we can come to some sort of agreement and I could go on my way.
[ Once more, he waits.
But to no avail.
He lets out a quiet sigh, resuming his steps along the station.
Finding a door, he heads towards it, threading lightly. When sights give way into a city of tall buildings, of no resemblance to anything he had ever seen, surprise takes over his expression. A network of streets was waiting for to be explored, seemingly deserted at the moment.
Pulling back his hood, he admires the city. It does have a certain beauty, but he can’t let himself get enticed by it. He has to find out where he is, if this is friendly territory or otherwise, and then, he has to find his way back to his comrades.
He begins walking down the first street in his sight, hoping he can find some answers for this sudden problem.]
Third Person: This is the format that will be used in rubycity_logs. This sample will be in third-person past tense, at least three well-written paragraphs, 3-4 sentences per paragraph, which will show your understanding of your character. One should consider spelling, grammar and tense when doing all samples.
The sun was going down. The buildings were graced with the lazy orange light, and the city seemed to be ready to set into a peaceful slumber. The air was mostly quiet, as the animals scurried away into their nests, resting up for another day of food gathering and survival.
The Grocery store’s door opened, and a dark, caped figure stepped out, holding a parcel on his hand. He tucked it cozily under his arm and started to make his way down one of the streets, in calm, contemplative steps. He had yet to fully find his way around the area, but that was alright. He’d usually find his way back somewhere, and start again.
He looked at other city members as he passed by them. He was given a smile or two, which he humbly returned. So many different creatures, the likes of which he had never seen. He wondered where they had come from; they would rarely look like they belonged to the same place, like they were plucked from different worlds, different lives, all set in that place like misplaced dolls in a child’s dollhouse. But that was alright. He could see the friendly interactions; everything seemed fine, at first glance at least. It could be considered a heartwarming sight.
He stepped out of the city. The paved streets gave way to grass, that crumbled softly under his shoes. One would find it hard to tell where he was going; honestly, he didn’t even know. He had simply decided to walk, to clear his head. He had a lot to think about since he had gotten there, and long walks always seemed to fix that problem.
He walked for hours. The sun set behind the mountains, and the sky’s warm golden dress gave way into a black veil gracefully adorned by hundreds of stars. Lights could be seen in the city behind him, and the cawing of birds gave way to the simple breeze in the trees. And still, he walked.
He was used to walking; he spend most of his time doing so, ever since he could remember, whether he wanted to or not. He never could afford to settle down, you see. Especially when the ideas of revolution started haunting his mind and his presence was made noticed.
---
He finally stopped. He looked up at the sky and admired the rising moon. It was not the colorful duo that watched over his home, but this large, yellowed disk had its own grace. Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes, simply listening to the soft sounds around him.
After a few moments of relaxation, he sat, taking the parcel from under his arm and opening it. It was simply a couple of morsels and something to drink. Setting it on his lap, he admired the moon as he ate in silence.
“Truly a perfect world” he thought. “Had only our home been like this…maybe our kin would have truly been happy.”
