In many ways, if England is a pirate-turned-gentleman, Wales is and will always be the black knight. He has his own personal rules and code that he holds himself to, and he rarely lets himself deviate from that, but otherwise his attitude, to put it succinctly, is that he doesn't care about the rules one way or another; he's not an outright rebel but if he has to go around a rule he won't hesitate. He can be stubborn to a fault when he sets his mind to something. It takes a lot to actually get him angry, but when he does, he doesn't fly into a rage; instead he has a very cold sort of anger, using cruel, cutting remarks instead of yelling. He has a cursing habit, especially when he's in a bad mood – sometimes he forgets that he can't be understood and starts muttering in Welsh. And sometimes he doesn't want to be understood.

He loves music of all kinds; he's not called the “Land of Song” for nothing. He sometimes sings, but usually plays an old flute that he always carries and is learning how to play the viola. He isn't doing all that well because he's trying to teach himself. He also likes storytelling and poetry; it reminds him of bards back in the old days. Rugby and football/soccer are entertaining to watch and he always cheers his players on, but he doesn't play. He's not much of a fan of modern technology – he likes television, mp3 players, and movies, but if he tries to do anything more complex but write a document his computer freezes and he somehow irreversibly locked the Blackberry he tried to learn to use. This is why he still has a basic flip phone – he doesn't even dare to use the camera on it. But he has no problem working an mp3 player and loading songs on it. He doesn't understand this any more than anyone else.

He seems to hold his liquor well, but when he's drunk he will do anything you dare him to and you can ask him any question and get a truthful, complete answer because his filter is completely gone. Unfortunately for him – and anyone who gets secrets out of him this way – he doesn't usually black out so he'll remember what happened even through the bad hangover. This is why he doesn't drink much. He's a bit of a broody sort, and has a lighter with the Welsh dragon engraved on it – he smokes off and on – that he plays with constantly, but especially when he's in a pensive mood.

He hates guns even though he learned how to use them in war; in his mind they're lacking and if he has to fight he'd rather fight bare-handed or with a blade of some kind than to have a gun fight. He used to carry a dagger everywhere but hasn't for a few decades now. Finding a knife to carry as a defense weapon will be one of the first things he's likely to do in a possibly unsafe situation – like being in Ruby City.

Despite his citizens' top religion being Protestant and the second being Catholic, Wales has returned to his pagan roots fully in recent years, finally feeling free not to hide it. In appearance he doesn't resemble his brothers at first glance, though a closer look would let a person see their similar features. He has black hair that's always a bit too long in front and falls into his eyes, which are blue. Although his clothes usually hide them, he has two tattoos; the red dragon from his flag on the right side of his chest, and interwoven Celtic runes at the small of his back that, if one could read them, tell a basic outline of his life story. He's about five foot nine and slightly built.

At bottom, Wales has a serious self-confidence issue, though it's not obvious. He's spent most of his existence under different levels of English control, and ever since the official merger of the two countries in 1536, he's found that fewer and fewer people are even aware of him as a separate entity, even though he is no longer merged with England. Even some British citizens don't realize that he's a country rather than an English county. It makes him feel out of place with the other nations, because he's sure they don't see him as 'one of them'. It's another reason he tends to avoid romantic attachments; he'd have to watch a human lover die and he thinks that most countries wouldn't 'lower' themselves to become involved with someone who has been little but a province for most of his life.

History: Wales' existence dates back late in the B.C. Period. He was physically a young teenager when Rome invaded Britain, but he was still a very young nation – the constant infighting among the Celtic tribes all over the island of Britain forced their personifications into a speedier growth, to cope with it. Along with his younger brother, then called Albion, Wales (then called Cymru) was captured by Julius Caesar and Roman Empire, marched in one of the Roman Triumphs and forced to live in Roman Empire's house thereafter. Toward the end of Rome's dominance, Cymru took the initiative to escape Rome and try to find his way back to Britain. He eventually managed to do so, but he also got rather lost along the way, leading to at least one encounter with another nation – a small boy whom he traded swordfighting tips to for swordsmithing tips. There's a relevance to this in his current associations, but he hasn't put the two together yet.

After this, his land became a refuge for Briton tribes fleeing the deeper incursion of the Anglo-Saxons they had invited in themselves to help combat the Picts out of Scotland. This is why, in later years, he will resent his brother's appropriation of the King Arthur story – he won't say whether Arthur was real or not, but he was King of the Britons fighting Anglo-Saxons; if he existed he was Welsh, or so Wales insists. His land was truly united only once under independent rule, during the reign of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn – this is why, when choosing a human name, he chose a first name to honor his gods and a last name to honor his greatest king.

Llywelyn's reign only lasted for about seven years, though, and soon after Norman invasion engulfed his brother England's land, and then turned to him. The result was that the Anglo-Norman kings took control of border areas of Wales. The still-autonomous areas were ruled over by a Prince of Wales, but when Edward I of England invaded and took over in 1282. Wales would never achieve full independence again. For Wales himself, this meant that he was officially at the beck and call of his baby brother, whom he had helped raise. For the most part he accepted this as he did not have the resources to fight back.

However, in 1400, a Welsh noble named Owain Glyndwr rose up against the English king of the time, Henry IV. Wales escaped from his brother's London house for home, where he joined up with the rebels. However, the Welsh rebellion was crushed, and although Glyndwr was never captured, Wales was. He was actually hanged, in fact, but as a nation he was unable to stay dead and so he ended up back in England's house. He was left with essentially nothing to do during this time.

In 1485, however, Henry Tudor, the last member of England's Lancastrian royal line, challenged Yorkist King Richard III for the throne. Tudor was of Welsh descent; the Tudors may even have had the blood of long-dead Welsh princes in their veins. Again Wales escaped from his brother's house to fight for Henry, thinking that if he had to be under England's rule, then at least their shared King would have Welsh blood. This eventually backfired for him, not under the rule of the victorious Henry, but under his son, Henry VIII. It was under Henry VIII's reign that the Act of Union was signed, officially merging England and Wales. With this merger, which also included the ban of the Welsh language and any differentiation legally, Wales fully expected to fade away like many of the Ancient nations had already done. To his surprise, and thanks to his people's stubbornness in hanging onto their culture and language even in secret, he survived just fine. However, he lost his ability to do magic, though not to see magical creatures.

Wales had quite a few interactions with the Tudors. Henry VII let him live at Ludlow Castle in the Welsh Marches with his eldest son, Arthur, Prince of Wales. Wales knew Arthur rather well, having watched the boy grow up. He was also one of the few who realized how very much in love the Prince was with his young wife, Princess Katherine of Aragon. Later, he would be there when Henry VIII's eldest daughter, the then-Princess Mary, came to Ludlow. He was charmed by the young girl, and was personally very much on her and her mother's side in Henry's Great Matter.

After the merger, he returned to his brother's house, but was often still at court. He met Mary – now merely Lady Mary – again and found himself developing an affection for her of a different sort. He never let it get beyond courtly love, however, and Mary never thought he was anything but a friend. He was not in love with Elizabeth, though he liked her and was rather happy to discover that she spoke at least some Welsh.

After the end of the Tudors and the rise of the Scottish Stuart kings, Wales retreated into near-total anonymity. The effects of this are still obvious today, in that while nations recognize him as one of their own, they're not entirely sure just who he is, precisely. In most of the wars Britain got itself involved in, Wales would play the human soldier. One exception was the War of Austrian Succession – he was his brother's official backup in that war for the brief time they were involved. He met Austria and the two of them became friendly over shared interests – well, really, over music – but when England pulled out of the war there was no further contact. Wales didn't have too much interaction with the colonies England collected – he would play his flute or tell stories for the young ones on occasion but that was all, though he did bond a bit with Canada over being overlooked.

In the world wars of the 20th century, Wales returned to his playing human system of being a fighter, particularly in World War I. He proved to be very good at stealth missions, mostly because he wasn't easily recognized. In World War II, he was part of a unit of British intelligence that used Welsh to help develop codes. After the war, during occupation, he was stationed in Vienna to keep an eye on Austria. They hit it off again, but once occupation there ended in 1955, the friendship once again lapsed.

During the later part of the 20th century, Welsh affairs were more and more becoming handled separately from English affairs, culminating in a 1997 referendum that allowed for the creation of a National Assembly for Wales, as the new devolved government was called. For Wales, this is the closest to independence he's been since the Middle Ages, and the first time he's been a separate if not sovereign entity since 1536. Some of his magic returned to him when he got his devolved government, and he now lives in a flat in downtown Cardiff rather than in London at his brother's house.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Wales doesn't look very strong, and in sheer force he's a bit of a lightweight, but if he's fighting he's fast and sneaky; he'll fight dirty if that's what he has to do to win. He has a talent for codes and codebreaking, learned during WWII. He keeps his head in a crisis, though as soon as he's alone afterwards he falls apart. He's not afraid of the dark or small spaces on their own, but if he's trapped in a small, dark space he will have a panic attack, he's always been phobic of the combination. He thinks that his tendency to bottle up emotions is a strength, but it's also a weakness because there's a lot that he hasn't dealt with yet. If you actually earn his trust and loyalty, you've got someone at your back for life – but he never forgives a betrayal. He's afraid of falling in love, because it's never ended well for him. His recklessness gets him in trouble sometimes, because when he lets it have free rein there's not much he won't dare to do. Other times it's the only reason something good happens in his life, so depending on the situation it's both a strength and a weakness, and his usual control is the same.

Abilities: Like England, Wales can see magical creatures, and he has some magical ability – though his spells don't work any better than England's do, generally.

Relationships to Canon Characters: Brother to England and Scotland

First Person: [Wales' eyes snap open, and he sits bolt upright. The funny thing was that he had been on a train – he'd had to speak to his Secretary in London – but it definitely wasn't this one, and that definitely wasn't the station in Cardiff that he was pulling into. Still, he gets off, hands in his jacket pockets as he looks around at his surroundings.]

What the bloody fuck is this place?

[His voice is quiet, and he's watchful; it's been a while since he felt the lack of any sort of weapon but right now he does. He doesn't like this town and how deserted it is. He'd like to call for anyone who might be within earshot, but he doesn't want to draw the attention of someone or something that might be a threat.]

Isn't there anyone else in this town? I hope I'm not dead; if this is the afterlife I'm going to be bored. Not that I'm sure how I would be dead, since you'd think I'd have kicked it long ago if... Right. I've kept my sanity this long, best not lose it now talking to myself.

[He fumbles for his lighter and that's when he notices the other thing in his left pocket. He knows the pocketwatch isn't his, and he holds it up in confusion. Seeing the lights that mark it as a communicator, he swears colorfully in Welsh.]

Damn it, just when I was getting used to that mobile... I hope this thing is on. Hello? Anyone listening? Am I using this damn thing right? I just hope it doesn't die on me...

Third Person: Wales sighed as he looked around the flat. It had obviously not been lived in for some time, but he'd be damned if he was going to stay with anyone – there were only a few he'd be able to tolerate living with, and of those, one was already living with people he couldn't tolerate and the other... He wasn't going to be asking anyone else but the first person. So, he'd just have to fix this place up.

Tilting his head, he considered it, absently flicking his lighter on and off as he did so. It was about the size of his flat back home, one of the reasons he liked it so much. And, hell, fixing it up would give him something to do. He hated being idle, it reminded him too much of a good bit of his time in his brother's house with nothing to keep himself occupied. He'd nearly gone crazy back then.

“And what do you intend to do after the place is fixed up, Llywelyn?” he asked himself, speaking aloud to break the silence of the room. That was the problem, of course; he had no idea just what it was he was going to do after this. Though he could find something, he was sure – even if there was no way in hell he was helping down at that shop, even if Canada was working there he could only take his brother and y Broga (the Frog) in small doses. He'd keep himself busy some other way. Maybe offer sword lessons or something mad like that if he could find swords here. Unlikely, but possible.

Well, whatever he was going to do, he'd best get started on this, at least.
