APPLICATIONS

Applications are processed weekly, every weekend. The cut-off time for the submission of applications is 11:59PST on Saturday.
✗ Before applying, please read the FAQ and Rules pages.
✗ Please submit your application with the journal you plan to use if you have one made already. If not, another journal is fine, but we prefer your intended journal so it makes for an easier time in granting access to the mod journal and the contacts page.
✗ For very long applications, we would ask you to please separate them into various comments so that they will not take up too much of the page.
✗ Please title your application as { [CANON/CANON OC/OC]CHARACTER NAME || Series Title || reserve/no reserve || X of X } in the subect header
IMPORTANT: Our application form was edited on September 07, 2015. Please use the revised form.
✗ If you are looking for an example of what an application should be like, please refer to the application here for an example of a canon character application, and here for an original character application.

A note for CR AU applications
Ruby City does allow previous game history/CR to be brought over on a case by case basis. If you want to include this in your application please add additional sections for PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT and PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY beneath the Personality and Background/History sections.

In these additional sections we would like to see a brief outline of your character's previous game history and how it potentially impacted on and altered their canon personality.

So I'm not quite sure I understand how the housing works. Do I just pick a place? Can it be a building that already has people in it or does it have to be an entirely empty building (or apartment, I guess)? It seems a lot of the buildings have single casts living together in them (Like the homestuck house) and it seems like I probably shouldn't just go "by the way homestucks you have an 80 year old wizard living with you." Is my room already furnished to my character's liking when he gets there?

Personality: Merlin is by design a very mysterious character and not much is revealed of his actual motives or background in the series. It is hinted on several occasions that he might in fact be rather a lot older than what he appears to be, an example of this being the fact that Igraine remarks that he has not aged a day since she last saw him, which was twenty years earlier. One is never given a proper perspective on just how old he is, but another hint given in canon leads me to believe that it’s not too far-fetched to imagine that he might be centuries old. He takes Arthur to a place where the “Sword of the Gods” is lodged between some rocks at the top of a waterfall, and apparently there is some sort of legend/prophecy connected to this sword that makes pulling it out a good “publicity stunt” in Arthur’s quest to get himself recognized as the true king.

Well, it is in fact suggested that Merlin might have been the one who put the sword there and spread the legend around.

Now I’m not saying one necessarily needs a hundred years or more to get a story to spread and take root and for the origins of it to get lost, but for it to gain enough significance to affect the opinion of a whole country in regards to their king? That might take some time in medieval Britain.

But anything of a more substantial nature when it comes to Merlin is hard to verify because the man is incredibly secretive and does everything he can to not share information about himself. Very probably it’s partly out of shame since he has done plenty of bad things in his long life. Canon examples being assisting Uther in the rape of Igraine (he changes Uther’s appearance so that he looks like her husband) and the accidental killing of a swordsmith and his daughter.

But apart from his rather obvious guilt and self-loathing, there is also a very calculating part of him who has his eyes firmly set on one goal. To create a kingdom of peace and hope. And with that goal in mind he’s probably aware that if anyone is to listen to him in matters of achieving that goal it might not be the best idea to reveal his many dark deeds. Better to be seen as questionable and at times suspicious than downright evil, which is a risk he might run if he revealed himself completely. At least that is what he seems to think, whether it’s true or not.

In Camelot canon, magic is a highly addictive and very dangerous thing. Using it leaves you feeling elated and powerful, but it also makes you sick and at times wounded. Canon shows the two magic users Morgan and Merlin getting suddenly appearing bruises, bleeding from nose and eyes, doubling over in pain, having fevers… Merlin has in the series sworn off magic (though he breaks that vow on several occasions) and mentions several times that magic costs, and that he considers the price too high to pay. Basically in matters of magic he is a recovering addict, and he doesn’t really have much support in this struggle because everyone around him thinks he should use his powers to help people around him, not understanding the price Merlin and to an extent the people around him might have to pay if he uses magic too much. He struggles every day with not using his powers, the temptation a constant in his life. He loves the power, and he fears it. He believes that it pulls him into the dark, that it calls to the fore all in him that is in opposition to the world he’s trying to build.

His ideals are definitely noble, and he does try to make sure that as few people as possible get hurt in the process of making them reality, but he has deliberately closed himself off emotionally and on a personal level doesn’t care much for most people. He mostly does this to protect others from himself, as he is convinced that anyone who is close to him will end up getting hurt. If nothing else the fact that when he touches people their secrets are sometimes revealed to him through visions only serves to create a greater barrier between him and others. Sometimes it is painful to know things, and most of us don’t want our secrets involuntarily revealed.

He sees the big picture but at times struggles with understanding individuals, which is often why his plans don’t always go as he wants them to however masterfully laid out they are.
He is a very intelligent man and it does show that he is aware of being on another intellectual level than most people around him. To put it bluntly he can come off as being rather smug, sometimes annoyingly so.

However, in spite of all his emotional distance and his focus on what one might call the greater good, one can sometimes see glimpses of the man he perhaps was once, or the man he could have been. He is tender, good with children and has a good sense of humor that he enjoys sharing with those he likes. He rarely lets anyone close enough for much of that side to truly appear, but when it happens it tends to draw people in because he can be very charismatic, and there is an appeal in the possibility of revealing some of his mysteries.

He is a very convinced atheist and can sometimes be a bit dismissive of people’s faith, to the point where he seems to be almost a little angry with the concept of religion.

All things told he is an incredibly secretive idealist who wants to make the world a better place and is frustrated that the people in it insist on making it so difficult.

Personality: While my decision to pick up Grantaire was more inspired by the recent movie adaptation of the musical than anything else it’s necessary to draw upon what I know of the original novel to give any sort of in-depth explanation of Grantaire’s personality and motivations. In terms of what canon will be followed in game I'm going to do as Grantaire would and follow someone else's lead. I believe an Enjolras will be apping into the game soon and if they are allowed in I'll talk such matters over with them and refer to whichever canon they want to play from since it doesn't really matter all that much to me. If Grantaire ends up being alone I will follow book canon (though if I agree upon a canon with the player of Enjolras and he is later dropped, I will of course stick to what we decided, just to be clear).

Victor Hugo describes Grantaire as a man who only exists in relation to someone else, in this case Enjolras. He doesn’t have a defined sense of self, and no set beliefs. He hates and reviles most of humanity and regards lofty ideals like justice and freedom with sneering skepticism. He is a broken man who seeks refuge in drink to escape from the world he seems unable to stand living in.

Paradoxically, he is still very capable of affection. His heart needs friendship, as it says in the book, and what little true joy he experiences seems to come from being around the friends of the ABC, even if many of them seem to merely tolerate him without really returning his affection.

It’s no surprise that it is that way for him, because he seems to make a sport of making himself absolutely impossible, sitting in a corner and holding drunken monologues on various topics that nobody cares to hear about and being a general let-down.

His sense of humor seems to prefer to take a rather mocking turn, and jokes are made at the expense of people or ideals in an often bitter sort of fashion. He can probably at times come off as incredibly attention-seeking, but it is at the same time clear that he doesn’t really know what to do with said attention if and when he gets it. When asked to take responsibility, to lead, he can have an honest intention to do it but in the end he is likely to falter because he just has no idea where to go after he’s been asked to live up to his brash boasting.

He is, underneath it all, a very well educated man who would be just as capable as any of the other young men to quote famous authors and discuss philosophy until he was blue in the face, but he sees no point in it and prefers to commit himself to more earthly pleasures. Drinking, fighting and most likely the occasional romp with prostitutes, it is presented as rather unlikely that anyone would want to share his bed without compensation.

Part of him seems to want to change, if nothing else so that he might be looked upon with something other than disdain by the man he worships, but he never seems to be able to quite manage it. Even when given chances he tends to mess it up, playing domino rather than convincing people to join the revolution and such things. In the end, not even Enjolras can make him believe that the whole thing is anything but a waste of time.

In his own way, he is just as commited to his beliefs that any of the other students, it is just that his are exactly opposite to theirs. He needs opposition to exist. He needs to be the counter-argument, the dark side. It is the only way he knows how to live, and that is why he can’t free himself from neither his destructive habits, nor his hopeless longing for Enjolras’ affection.

At least in the musical he acts as the voice of opposition, the one who speaks what some of the others might perhaps think but will not say. He gives a voice to the fear that perhaps the whole attempt at a revolution was just an exercise in futility that will come to nothing at all, and their deaths will be empty. In being the one who holds Enjolras in the most fanatically high regard he is in a sense also the one least intimidated by him. He speaks up to him, fights with him, disappoints him. He is a rebel among revolutionaries in his own drunken sort of way. He doesn’t care what system governs society since he will pay equally little heed to them all.

He is a man not complete without someone to attach himself to, he defines himself by what he is not rather than what he is. He is a study in negatives, a bitter cynic with a tender heart somewhere inside that wants to be loved but at the same time does everything he can to make himself utterly unlovable. A paradox of a man, and a tragedy.

In the end all he really wants is to be allowed to watch those he loves be successful, even if he can’t seem to help getting in their way as much as he possibly can. He wants to be with his idealistic friends and he wishes for all of their dreams to come true, he just doesn’t believe that they can. Much as he seems to be constantly attempting to pull those around him down into his darkness, what he truly wants is for them to soar above him. He is compelled to share with the world his opinion that everything is bound to end badly, and that all things are more or less worthless, but he really, really wants to be wrong.

First Person: Here

Third Person: Another day, another gutter. Grantaire woke up with the distinct feeling that his head was about to explode, a state so familiar to him that it’s quite possible he would have gotten worried had he woken up feeling perfectly fine.

For a few moments as he sat up to lean his back against the wall of the building he’d collapsed against, he thought he was still in Paris, vaguely wondering if the disturbing images of corpses that his imagination wanted to strew all around him were just the remnants of a particularly unpleasant dream.

Then, as his head cleared a little and the dream-specter cobwebs were swept aside he remembered where he was.

Hell.

Or Ruby City, but he remained rather convinced that the two were one and the same, because where else could someone like him possibly end up after death? Granted he had expected a bit more fire and brimstone, but at the end of the day it was quite enough to be here, alone, and knowing that his friends had passed on to a place where he could not go. A good thing Satan at least had the courtesy to supply him with drink to numb the pain. He’d always suspected the old bastard was a decent sort. If someone managed to get that much on God’s bad side, they had to be worth knowing.

With a groan he got to his feet and glanced up to find that he’d actually managed to pass out right by the door to the building he was currently occupying. Well, if one was to find a silver lining in that bit of irony it was at least convenient now.

“Would’ve been more convenient to wake up in my bed,” he muttered to himself as he opened the door and stepped inside.

Personality: Dante is the very definition of a 'devil-may-care' attitude. He can come off as extremely aloof and uncaring, though deep down he harbors a strong sense of honor and justice. Unlike his brother Vergil, Dante embraced the human side of his heritage, choosing to fight for and defend humans while trying to deny his demonic side. He makes it a point to try not to kill humans for any reason, even if they prove to be evil, though there have been exceptions. No unnecessary killing, that's his viewpoint. Often he will pretend to be disinterested in a job, especially if it doesn't offer good pay, though he usually ends up investigating anyway. Unfortunately for him people take advantage of his good nature and often don't pay, or end up charging him instead for the property destroyed during his jobs. This has resulted in a fairly massive debt, not that Dante seems to really mind it too much, it gives him something to complain about.

Though he's matured greatly over the years, Dante remains ever the sarcastic rebel. Rarely does he display much in the way of seriousness, and even less often is he caught without a sarcastic remark (or several). He is notorious for absolutely terrible jokes, but that's never stopped him from making them. Despite his dark past and even darker profession, Dante is remarkably quite the optimist. As he says, there's no use being all gloomy over a situation, and the worse it is is just more reason to go out with a bang.

For all of his optimism and care-free sarcasm, Dante is ever plagued by the loss of his mother and twin brother, Vergil. His mother's death, and his subsequent desire for revenge were the main reason he chose his life path of demon hunting, to protect others from the same fate. He is ever at war with himself over his demonic blood and extremely reluctant to accept it, much less embrace it, even if it does give him the strength to wage his personal war on Hell. This duality keeps him ever at odds with himself, though Dante craves very much to be human, deep down he knows he cannot be, leaving him secretly quite lonely. He has very few friends, and those he does have he still manages to keep at arm's length. His twin's disappearance into the Underworld, and later death at Dante's own hands also still weighs on his heart.

Also, don't touch the man's sundaes, this will be taken as a personal offense. He also has a bad habit of gambling, even though he is absolutely terrible at it.

First Person: [It wasn't the first time Dante had ever followed an unexplained compulsion to go somewhere, or do something. In fact at first he hadn't even thought it particularly strange to get on the train, things like this happened to him far more often than he cared to admit. Another day in the life for the devil hunter.

However, it was perhaps the first time a train had stopped somewhere relatively... normal? Sure, the place had the whole spooky mysterious fog thing going for it, but other than that it completely lacked the surreal, foreboding quality he'd come to expect from these kinds of adventures. Honestly, he was a little disappointed.]

Losing your touch, or did you just decide to finally drop the cheesy horror novel act?

[He said to no one in particular. After a few beats and no answer (not that he was expecting one), Dante decided it was time to move. One of the many posters caught his eye, and without it he'd not have noticed the pocket watch in his coat pocket. Well, that was sneaky now, wasn't it? Normally this pompous sort of thing wasn't his style, but flicking it open revealed its true use. Well, might as well play along for now.]

Well, wouldn't you know it? I missed my stop, and to make matters worse it looks like that was the last train of the day. I don't see anyone around running this place, so if someone in this fancy talking watch would be so kind as to point me in the right direction to hitch a ride home, you'd have my thanks.

[Yeah, he doubts that'll work. But it's worth a try?]

Third Person: "You're not the least bit interested? A mysterious train picks passengers up, but they're never heard from again. Sounds right up your alley."

"Not tonight, Lady, I'm busy." Dante replied, idly flipping a page on the magazine he was perusing. In truth, he was curious, but he knew Lady would tell him anyway, whether or not he asked. This was how it always went, she brought him a job, he refused, they argued about it until she proved it was worth his time.

"Is that right?"

"Mhmm."

"With what, got a hot date?"

"For your information, yes."

"Dante, a pizza and a bottle of Jack don't count as a date," Lady smirked knowingly, making her way casually across his office as she searched for a way to force the issue. "How about a bet," She picked up a dart found laying on the floor. God, Dante, you're such a pig. "I hit the bulls-eye, without looking, from across your office, and you take the job without question. What do you say, cowboy?"

Dante considered this for a time, still thoughtfully thumbing through his magazine. She knew he'd take it, and he knew that she knew, but he still put on the act. Every single damned time. "Alright, it's a deal. But, if you miss, you're paying off my pizza tab. Got it?"

"Done." With that she made her way back across the office, her pace a confident saunter. This deal was as good as hers, there wasn't a chance that she'd miss. Dante continued to feign disinterest, but in truth he was watching out of the corner of his eye like a hawk. Would she miss, this time? Would he end up having to go back her up on this investigation anyway, if she had to go alone? Probably. But at least he'd get his pizza debt paid.

Without turning she casually tossed the dart over her shoulder, waiting to look until the satisfying sound of it making contact with the board reached her ears. She turned, already smirking, not to the dart board, but to Dante, who was wearing the most annoyed frown. "I guess that's a bulls-eye, cowboy." As if there was ever any doubt. Dante huffed, getting to his feet grudgingly and reaching for his coat.

"Yeah, yeah. I still say you'd make more money as a hustler."

"Good luck on your job, and try not to break anything this time."

"Pfeh, sure." Just for that, he was going to break something.

It was dark by the time he reached the train station. A heavy fog obscuring all but the closest buildings. In the distance he heard the horn, the rumble of a train further down the tracks. Looked like this was it, hopefully it would be more fun than the last few jobs.
