Re: [CANON] Machi Tobaye || Ace Attorney || Re-App No Reserve || 2 of 3

[personal profile] machitobaye 2014-12-20 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
Background: Machi was born in a small country called Borginia, located in northern Europe, where he played piano at various restaurants to make a living, sleeping in alleys and doorways at night and generally ekeing out an existence as a homeless orphan in a tiny country as best he could. Eventually he met Lamiroir, a blind singer who he treated with great kindness; the two of them grew quite close and Lamiroir grew fond of the sound of his piano. He was pretty young when they met--only nine or ten, and as an orphan, Machi probably didn't have a lot of prospects. However, the two of them grew quite close and Lamiroir grew fond of the sound of his piano, so she stipulated his presence in her contract when she was scouted, and the two were always seen together--literally, as the two were always hand in hand, both in public and in private.

There was in fact a second, hidden reason for the constant contact, however--though blind, Lamiroir was billed as "the landscape painter in sound," supposedly because she painted what she saw through her music. Her production team was unaware of her blindness when they billed the catchphrase, and by the time the mistake was caught, it was too late... so Machi pretended to be blind instead and kept up the deception while actually leading her and drawing symbols into her hand to signal important things that she needed to "see." Lamiroir's blindness was a very closely kept secret, and in fact its secrecy was also part of their contract, as was Machi's perfectly normal vision.

At some point, however, Machi found himself in need of a very large sum of money, far more than he could ever hope to make, and ended up agreeing to help a Stateside police detective named Daryan Crescend smuggle a very rare cocoon--called a Borginian cocoon--into the United States for money. This was an extremely dangerous operation, as the transport of said cocoon was highly illegal and being convicted of its smuggling carried a death sentence in Borginia. This was in part because of the cocoon's uses--on the one hand, it was required to make a potent curative--the only cure, in fact--for a rare but fatal disease called 'incuritis.' On the other hand, it could also be synthesised into an extremely powerful poison, called atroquinine. Nigh-undetectable, atroquinine was fast-acting and untreatably lethal, even in small doses. Despite this, Machi got the cocoon to the States, a feat he accomplished by hiding it inside a guitar belonging to a famous prosecutor/rock star named Klavier (Daryan, by the way, was a bassist in said star's band)... a guitar that Lamiroir had gifted to the man after meeting and composing a song with him. Klavier, unaware, vacuum-sealed and express-shipped the instrument to the U.S., bypassing many checkpoints and safety points with his legal status--basically, he had it handled as evidence, and thereby inadvertently prevented the cocoon's detection. Unfortunately, Lamiroir's new manager, Romein LeTouse, was an undercover agent who was looking for cocoons, among other things. And when Lamiroir and Machi went to Britain to do a concert with Klavier's band... LeTouse was murdered. In the middle of the concert. With his own gun. Machi was accused of the crime, largely on the premise that he was one of the few available (i.e. not on stage) at the time of the murder and he was the only one small enough to escape through the air vents, which were the only conceivable exit. And, too, there was the delicate international status of the crime itself (not to mention the scandal of the trial itself), and a political desire to get things wrapped up as quickly as possible. As the trial went on, it was first concluded that the murder was apparently both staged and committed to the lyrics of the song Lamiroir and Klavier had composed together. The truth of Machi's vision--and Lamiroir's--was revealed quickly, making it clear that Machi could very well have seen to commit the murder. Later, however, outside evidence and testimony revealed that Daryan had in fact both set up and framed Machi after killing LeTouse, using the song to get away with it. Machi himself had secretly destroyed the cocoon during the concert, on Daryan's signal, which was issued when Daryan realised they had been discovered. Unfortunately, in order to convict Daryan of this, they first had to get Machi to talk--something they could only do after discovering he could understand English, albeit in a limited fashion. Despite Daryan's pleas and arrogant dismissal of Machi, the pianist finally confessed, revealing that he had actually witnessed the crime, and--frightened--hidden behind a dresser before fleeing up through an air vent, where he had been caught by Daryan and knocked out, who had then set Machi and the corpse up in a way that mimicked the lyrics. Once caught in the dressing room, Daryan had murdered LeTouse in panic and framed Machi afterwards.

In short, Machi was not guilty of murder.

He was, however, guilty of perjury, and what was--in his home country--a capital crime. Just as bad as murder, as far as the end result was concerned.

The revelation that the United States did not view it as harshly was a key reason that Machi was absolved of the murder charge to begin with--had Apollo not declared this to the court, he may very well have gone to death row. Instead, Daryan, losing control, revealed his own guilt, and Machi was absolved of one crime but found guilty of another, and he has spent the past eight months in prison. It is from this point in canon that I pull him.

Re: [CANON] Machi Tobaye || Ace Attorney || Re-App No Reserve || 3 of 3

[personal profile] machitobaye 2014-12-20 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
Abilities: Machi is primarily a talented pianist, but he is actually musically talented in general, although he's never played any other instrument or even tried to learn one, and he still holds his greatest affinity for the piano. He almost certainly has perfect pitch, and is possessed of very sensitive hearing--hypersensitive, possibly, but either way he is basically a gifted and perceptive kid, very smart and hardworking in certain circumstances. His history expands on this a bit. Given an unfamiliar instrument and a basic demonstration (or even without one), he could mostly likely familiarise himself and learn out how to play quickly--which is to say, in a matter of minutes or hours (depending on whether it's a guitar or a theremin or a didgeridoo--the more obtuse the instrument, the longer it'd take.) He's also extremely adaptable--maybe too adaptable--and more than clever enough to take advantage of it.

First Person: [In using the watch, Machi has only ever attempted video, and in this, at least, nothing has changed. The image is dominated by a pair of large reflective sunglasses, which cover the small, serious face of a child. The round face is framed by blond hair.]

Trucy? Yaeson?

[His young voice comes with a thick accent, and absolutely butchers the name 'Jason.' He hesitates for a few seconds.

Then, more cautiously, he adds another name.
]

...

Phoenix Wright?

[An even longer pause. It's almost a full minute. Finally and very grudgingly:]

.....Integra?

[That's it. That's the video.

Welcome back, Machi Tobaye.
]

Third Person: Machi woke to the loud, steady, rocking rhythm of the train. It was not a gradual waking, either; the train woke him all at once, and with awareness came all the memories and events he'd lost--good and bad. Mostly bad.

He was still in the distinctive blue and white striped uniform of the Los Angeles prison complex. This was hardly shocking: he'd been sitting in his cell just... whenever he'd been there, before the train. What was rather more unexpected was the presence of a warm weight on his lap...courtesy of the furry black and white body of a spotted skunk. Alerted by his movement, the skunk stirred, stretching up to press a cold pink nose up against Machi's face.

"No!" He pushed the creature away agitatedly, but it was unfazed; planting its forepaws against his stomach, it tried again, long claws digging painfully into his side.

"Get OFF," he shoved the skunk harder, this time forcing it off his lap entirely. He was already half-panicked; the insistent attentions of a pound and a half of nosy mammal were not helping. The skunk landed uneventfully at his feet, where it began to sniff unconcernedly at the floor. He pushed it further away with one foot, eliciting a disgruntled grumbling.

The skunk--named Kashkash--was actually prison property. She'd been forcibly assigned to him as part of a mandatory program in which every prisoner was given a pet for which they were responsible. The idea--as Machi understood it, which was poorly--was that partnership with an animal was somehow supposed to somehow be good for him. This might have been a good idea except that Machi had two feelings about animals: discomfort and nervousness. In the case of some animals, dogs especially, this was elevated to actual fear. He was given no say in this decision, however, nor in any others related to it; he just had to deal with it, and it had become yet another unhappy fact of life: wherever he went, there she was. Kashkash followed him endlessly--a furry unwanted shadow that tried to eat his food and wanted to sleep on his legs. Last time, the animal had been left behind by whatever forces had taken him onto the train to begin with. This time, however, Kashkash had apparently been included--

And just a few short minutes later, the train pulled into its station, squealing gradually to an ungentle stop.

CHARACTER
Name: Junko Enoshima
Canon: Dangan Ronpa
Age: 19
Timeline: Chapter 6 Mastermind Trial
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A

Personality: Junko Enoshima is a girl of paradoxes, self contradictory from beginning to end. Everything she does is for pursuit of despair -- without it, she's bored to tears and boredom is the one thing that Junko cannot stand (well aside from hope but that's like saying Superman dislikes Kryptonite). She lives and breathes it and dedicates her entire life to bringing despair to herself and others and will do whatever it takes to fulfil that goal, from the mundane and petty to the cataclysmic -- there is nothing too taboo, too wild for her to do as long as it guarantees her some kind of Despair net worth. She worships Despair and it wouldn't be much of an exagerration to call it a fetish either -- she writhes and moans and drools upon experiencing the "one in a lifetime" experience of the "Despair of Death" and it sent off to her execution with a big smile on her face.
She claims to have been born in despair at her own birth and it's clear that her obsession with despair started at an early age - as told in Dangan Ronpa Zero, she once spent days building an elaborate sandcastle, only to destroy it, all for the Despair of seeing her hard work come to nothing. She's as mercurial as she is cruel -- she enjoys tormenting others, picking them apart at the seams and seeing them tumble into Despair. This cruelty far exceeds petty actions -- she kills her twin sister entirely on a whim, claiming it was simply because she thought Mukuro was doing a bad job of imitating her.

This is an apt metaphor for much of Junko's behaviour in general - she can be deeply self-destructive and is prone to sabotaging her own plans just to taste the Despair of failure. This makes her at once a wildcard and yet strangely predictable -- because Junko will always leave a stray thread in her plans that, if pulled, with leave the whole setup crashing down around her ears -- because there is simply no fun in a game that she is guaranteed to win.

Hand-in-hand with the above, Junko is deeply manipulative and charismatic. She's able to start what is essentially a world wide apocalypse with nothing more than her words, a group of angry, disillusioned teenagers and the despair she loves so very much. She's excellent at working out just what makes any given person tick and just how she can pull the rug out from under them in the most despair-inducing way. During the High School Life of Mutual Killing, she's able to work out just what will motivate her classmates into killing each other even without directly intervening -- the murders in the first three chapters are the direct results of the motives she offers.

But despite all her cunning and intelligence, she's strangely childish, too -- she's not all that composed at the best of times, but when things start to head south for her, she's not above throwing a tantrum like a child who doesn't get their way; she rants and screams at the final survivors of the first game as they slowly pull apart her mystery and actually stamps her feet and cries to herself during Dangan Ronpa Zero when the murder of the student council of Hope's Peak isn't "despair-inducing" enough for her. Like a child, she swings between emotional extremes at the blink of an eye, taking on a different manner of speaking and presenting herself so often that it's a genuine shock when she actually uses her own voice and personality. During the final trials of both games, she cycles through these "personalities" with the claim that she's been isolated so long that she's "forgotten" what her real self is like.

What's most disturbing about Junko is, despite all the above, she is not completely inhuman -- as easy as it would be to believe. Ryouko Otonashi, the protagonist of DR/0, is revealed to be Junko with her memories and her Despair obsession heavily supressed and without those she's shown to be a slightly timid but curious and intelligent and even kindhearted girl - she shows genuine feelings of joy, affection, guilt and even remorse. She was truly and deeply in love with Yasuke Matsuda and her shock and horror at killing him are completely genuine. She loves her older sister as well, even if she views her as disposable and -- on some level -- Junko loves her classmates. The High School Life of Mutual Killing is, partly, her way of sharing the despair she loves so much with the people she loves so much.

It's her gift to them.
Background: [ Junko's page at the DR Wiki ]
[ Ryouko Otonashi's page at the DR Wiki ]
Abilities: Being as she is the Ultimate Fashionista, Junko is incredibly attractive and graceful, with a great deal of knowledge about fashion, makeup and the like. She's able to use this to her advantage to disguise Mukuro as herself so well that it takes the others some time to realize there was any difference between the two at all. She's also a fantastic actress, managing to hide her true self so well that she was sealed inside the school with the very students that were being protected from her. She can lie, deceive and manipulate with the very best, spreading despair and planting seeds of distrust within her classmates with nothing more than her words and some vaguely ominous images of the outside world.

She's also incredibly intelligent, perhaps to the point of genius -- she is, after all, the one who sets up the events of DR, which presumably includes designing and building all the executions herself. In DRIF, she's able to come up with a fake name and Ultimate title within seconds of needing one, even to the point of faking a Monobear malfunction to add credit to the lie.

It's also worth mentioning that as Ryouko Otonashi she holds the title of "Ultimate Analyst", which suggests she has some analytical proficiency.

First Person: [ Dear_Mun Post ]

Third Person: Junko Enoshima was bored.

For anyone, this would be little more than a minor inconvenience -- but for Junko, it was a tragedy of epic and unimaginable proportions. It swelled and bloated like a blister on the pad of your finger, itching and stinging and aching and completely unignorable.

For any normal person this would, perhaps, have been the incentive needed to get up and do something to kill some time. But for Junko, it was just even more of an excuse to lay around and complain as though she were dying of some kind of awful disease.

"This place is the woooooorst!" she wailed at the top of her lungs, putting the back of her hand to her forehead for good measure -- not that there was anyone around to see it, but you never know. "What's the point of this place if nothing happens?! It's awful! Terrible! The absolute worst!"

She continued to rant in this vein for a good while but when it finally became evident that the universe would not bend itself to her whims under the weight of her complaining, she let out a sigh that made her bangs flutter and finally righted herself on the sofa. Her heels met the floor with a sharp clack and after a moment of mulling it over, she finally stood up.

"I guess I better make my own fucking entertainment then," she muttered darkly before stretching her lips back into a sugary sickly smile.

"I wonder where Nee-chan is..."

CHARACTER
Name: Stannis Baratheon
Canon: A Song of Ice and Fire
Age: 36
Timeline: At the conclusion of A Dance with Dragons, where Stannis' fate is left ambiguous, last seen three days ago in a snowed-in village.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A

Personality: Stannis Baratheon is a stern and uncompromising man of strong morality and law, iron in his assumed duty and mission, and incredibly difficult to deter from his planned course. Many in his world called him a fearsome presence due to his unbreakable morality and unyielding belief in not just his 'royal rights', but his expected task to lead the people of Westeros as King. He is a believer in just desserts for every action, good or bad. A smuggler named Davos Seaworth was responsible for saving his castle during the siege, and was given knighthood in gratitude, but only after losing fingers as punishment for his occupation as a smuggler.

However, even with this exhibition of a dogmatic morality, he is not above resorting to pragmatism to do what he considers the right thing. He has been willing to sacrifice a nephew and murder his brother (the murder successfully committed) in his rise to power, in addition to superficially supporting a foreign and brutal religion that demands human sacrifice in order to gain more support and legitimacy in the eyes of the people, as birthright or law alone is not enough to convince most, as it does him.

This is not to say that he is purely driven by the lofty ideals of royalty, for better or worse, for duty or for right. Honesty is one of his most favorite virtues, as his willingness to at one moment sharply and tersely dismiss a person's hopes, only to speak true and deep from his cool-tempered heart make him both difficult to deal with in a conversation, and any affection shown genuine and heartwarming, due to its scarcity and truth. Many times his retainers have questioned if anything they did was truly in service of him, only to be surprised by a sudden moment of gratitude. Davos had tried to assassinate what he perceived as a corrupting influence on Stannis, and was set to be executed. However, Stannis realized the true loyalty and honor of the smuggler knight, and enfeoffed him, considering him the only true vassal he had. This both gave a former commoner the rights of nobility, and a seditious knight freedom. And while Stannis quickly silenced the complaints of the established nobles, the hard time spent in prison by Davos, and the dangerous missions afforded after, demonstrated Stannis still expected justice for the act.

His honesty and belief in duty also manifests in an entitlement to rank and privilege that, while quieted as he has grown, still exists as he is prone to regular complaints and brooding over perceived slights, indicating a sensitivity to them beyond that of normal people along with the problem of feeling deserving. He is perfectly able to rough it, and do grim duties, and expects himself to, but will typically be groaning all along the way. This dour behavior is matched by his own lack of social prowess, hardly being considered charming, personable, or impressive. This reticent and miserly nature is a result of having two brothers that outshined him in their charisma, leaving Stannis forever in a shadow that causes him to be bitter and feel constantly trodden upon by others, even when not intended. Though, it usually is. Respect him as people may do for his honor, he has rarely been loved.

Overall, he is a strongly-principled man often finding himself in unfortunate situations due to a lack of people skills, having to resort to brutal means to fulfill his moral obligation, due to lacking any magnetism of his own. He trusts and believes in very few people, but those whom he does entrust have his permanent loyalty. The good of the community, be it kingdom or something else, will always come before he himself, however, as it is his duty as a King. A title he had hardly any desire for, and yet, still claims it birthright.

In a less-monarchical place for him to find himself in, Stannis would most likely resemble a miserable man concerned with things that are archaic and dated to most other characters, and near-obsessed, to the point where he is poor at continuing a conversation about something else. His terse wit, showing itself in his honesty, and resentful nature make him a bitter but amusing person to speak with for short periods of time, if one is not easily hurt. Outlasting his own critical nature will showcase him as stilted and awkward, if he bothers to linger aft seeing it as 'unimportant'. However, he is quite driven, and will most likely immediately resort to improving the lot of Ruby City, even if he is acting crotchety all the while.

[CANON] Stannis Baratheon || A Song of Ice and Fire || No Reserve || 2 of 3

[personal profile] righteousiron 2015-01-01 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Background: As the second son of one of the Lords Paramount in Westeros, Stannis lived a life of being outclassed and outloved. For what little he did know of his parents, who died in a boat crashing against the rocks, they held affection for his older brother Robert more. Robert, as the heir to the Stormlands, would become the center of attention due to his inheritance, while Stannis only had an old tutor to raise him.

As the years passed, with the cruelty of the ruling family and the intrigues between other important nobles in Westeros coming to a head, Robert would start a rebellion, allied with the North and East of Westeros against the King. Stannis, acting as a retainer to his brother, would hold Robert's headquarts, Storm's End, for over a year. The siege had gotten so dire at some points that the population were forced to eat rats, and then boot leather. The actions of Davos Seatworth, however, made it so onions could be a choice in their diet. Stannis outlasted the enemy, who retreated upon Robert seizing the capital. However, now that Robert was King, Stannis expected the Stormlands and Storm's End. Instead, his younger brother Renly received it, and Stannis the paltry yet traditionally important island of Dragonstone, after ousting the last royalists from it.

Stannis would at least become the Master of Ships on Robert's Small Council, but would begrudge his brother and complain incessently. After the Hand of the King, essentially the Prime Minister, was assassinated, Stannis expected the new rank, having defeated a rebellion by the Ironborn, western raiders, in his tenure. Instead, it went to Eddard Stark, a distant northern lord and somebody more of a brother to Robert than Stannis himself. Offended, he moved to Dragonstone to brood and plan.

Robert and Eddard would both be killed in court intrigue soon after, which resulted the bastard son of the Queen to inherit the throne, the father being the Queen's twin, no less. One of Eddard's last acts was to send a letter a letter to Stannis informing him of this. Acknowledging the bastard son as illegitimate, Stannis declared that he was the rightful king, being enxt in the line of succession since all of the supposed children of the King were bastards. Renly, his little brother, did the same. The result was their armies almost going to war, saved only by the assassination of Renly with, what most people suspect, and rightfully so, shadow magic that Stannis had utilized.

With Renly's larger army now without a King to support, most would join Stannis. With naval supremacy and a closeness to the capital, most royal armies busy fighting a northern rebellion, Stannis would lead an assault on the capital of King's Landing with his entire army and fleet. The battle was bloody on both sides, but due to the genius of Tyrion Lannister, the city's defended, Stannis was foiled and had to retreat. With his forces broken, Stannis languished in depression at Dragonstone.

However, far north, the military order responsible for defending the borders sent letters across the realm, warning of a paranormal invasion and the wild tribes being driven together to break through the military order in retreat. While other claimants ignored the letters from the Night's Watch, a band of ex-cons made ascetic soldiers as punishment, Stannis heeded the warning, spurred out of his depression, and moved his army north. They defeated the Wildlings that were invading, assisting the Night's Watch and earning the respect of both sides in a large way.

Politics would ensure that tensions arose once more, however, Stannis intending on gathering what Brothers and Wildings he could before marching south to fight the now-royalist north, the rebellion's leader murdered by seditious lords. With limited success in mustering soldiers and support, Stannis moved south, through the brutal and frigid winter. Last known to be holed up in a village, trying to shelter from the weather.

Abilities:
-Accomplished general: While defeated at the Battle of Blackwater Bay, Stannis has defended Storm's End from Highgarden, took Dragonstone from the Targaryans, defeated the Iron Islanders in an audacious naval battle and the landing that followed, and destroyed the Wildling army at the wall. His strength lies mostly in his lack of willingness to deal with intrigue or dissent amongst his ranks, and knowing where and how to apply what force he has available to him.
-Prudent ruler: While at times cold and overly-legalist, Stannis is among the more benevolent and composed rulers that vie for power. His people respect him greatly, even if he's the subject of mockery among the nobles, and doesn't discriminate based on origin or status quo, leading him to be equal-opportunity when it comes to gender, nationality, religion, or socioeconomic status.
-Determination: A man so stubborn and focused on his duty that he is feared for it throughout the land merits such a dogged part of his temperament being referred to as a 'skill'.

[CANON] Stannis Baratheon || A Song of Ice and Fire || No Reserve || 3 of 3

[personal profile] righteousiron 2015-01-01 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
First Person:
[Stannis passes through the the desolate building across from that strange railed road he came in on, hosting upon it that long, snake-like cart that had now disappeared. There are papers upon the wall around him, supposedly advice for 'newcomers'. And even what looks to be supplies. He snorts bitterly at the notion.]

Send a person to some hell, and act like you're the savior. The gall of them.

[His teeth grind as he ignores the supplies out of pride and suspicion, instead palming against the newfound weight in his trousers.]

Even worse, they slip something into my own leggings. Perhaps next I'll be finding my throne, only for it to be covered in the droppings of birds.

[With a frown deep against his worn and tight face, his hand reaches in to seize the item; something round and brass. Cautiously, he pulls it out, holding it on his open palm and scrutinizing it with a narrow stare.]

Some bauble of one kind or another...

[His thumb flicks over the lock keeping the watch closed, releasing its cover and showing all of foreign information Stannis could only look bewildered by.]

...Another accursed invention of my torturers. Their ingenuity is only matched by their ability to waste my time.

[Baratheon's back leans against the brick of the train station as he peers and tinkers with the watch, murmuring both dissatisfaction and discovery all the while.]

Third Person:
This settlement, a city long-abandoned by most from what he could reckon, was not from his world. Perhaps, as a man of Westeros, he had not seen all that his world had to offer. But the ethereal presence felt here, beyond the ones felt by his priestess' flames, gave him the infuriating impression that he was just a prisoner in this exotic realm. It had the trappings of Storm's End, or of Dragonstone, with the cobblestone roads and rats prowling for crumb or carcass to devour. Even the temple resembled a sept, somewhat, called a 'cathedral' on some of the maps he had found. But this was no land of his.

The king Baratheon thought for that reason, that determining who's land this was, was a matter of primary importance. The threats of danger and adversity were none that he hadn't faced before. Thoughts that struck him as built from hubris. But the longer he was away from his duty in Westeros was the more every party suffered. The security of his stomach and warmth of his body could wait.

From what he had been able to gleam from the scattered bits of information around town, there were two locations to check first: the object called the 'obelisk', apparently a tower of red. Whatever symbolism it had in his home, he doubt it held here, Stannis reminded himself. The second would be the library, needing no explanation other than it being a hub of information. He just cursed the potential fate of it being a foreign tongue. Always suspect the worst of men you do not know.

The town center, as told, contained the great monument Stannis sensed as mystical, but in a manner he was not able to place. Approaching it haughtily, though his heavy steps and grim demeanor betrayed his concern at its power, he stopped only a few feet away from it to peer closer into the crystal, the material of which this tower was made. But what he saw, some morphing shadow, a distorted darkness trying to grow but being kept imprisoned, warded him off soon after.

His feet skirt back, his steps slow and defensive. Before, he had seen such dark magic. That of the shadowbinders, of his own priestess. Now it lays within the grasp of somebody unknown to him, with purposes unknown but surely counter-intuitive. Seconds pass, and his fear hardens into contempt. His short and grounded teeth sneer at the ominous rock.

"Another means to power. Whatever this stone is supposed to conduct... I trust it not."

There would be nothing to gain standing around like an old miser and condemning this unknown force. Stannis would learn about it from a more prudent place, and determine its place in his mind from there. Others may damn or worship, but he simply used as necessary, as beneficial to the realm. The library was not far away now, and as such, that would be his next location. There he could learn.
