APPLICATIONS

APPLICATIONS

Applications are processed weekly, every weekend. The cut-off time for the submission of applications is 11:59PST on Saturday.
✗ Before applying, please read the FAQ and Rules pages.
✗ Please submit your application with the journal you plan to use if you have one made already. If not, another journal is fine, but we prefer your intended journal so it makes for an easier time in granting access to the mod journal and the contacts page.
✗ For very long applications, we would ask you to please separate them into various comments so that they will not take up too much of the page.
✗ Please title your application as { [CANON/CANON OC/OC]CHARACTER NAME || Series Title || reserve/no reserve || X of X } in the subect header
IMPORTANT: Our application form was edited on September 07, 2015. Please use the revised form.
✗ If you are looking for an example of what an application should be like, please refer to the application here for an example of a canon character application, and here for an original character application.

A note for CR AU applications
Ruby City does allow previous game history/CR to be brought over on a case by case basis. If you want to include this in your application please add additional sections for PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT and PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY beneath the Personality and Background/History sections.

In these additional sections we would like to see a brief outline of your character's previous game history and how it potentially impacted on and altered their canon personality.

Name: Billy Harris/Dr. Horrible (Last name unofficial)
Canon: Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog
Timeline: End of Act 2/immediately post “Brand New Day”
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: n/a

Personality: > In Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Billy is a thirty-something aspiring supervillain (30 even, if the show takes place in 2008) who wants nothing more than to join the Evil League of Evil. More than that, Billy is a shy man who wears unassuming earth tones, hides himself in oversized hoodies, and has to do his laundry at the Coin Laundry down the street. He’s socially awkward to a fault, as well as shy, as is shown by his behaviour in the reality portion of “My Freeze Ray”, where he mumbles a semi-greeting to Penny, and then later backtracks and pretends that he didn’t compliment her when she hears him. He wishes that he could be more assertive, however, which is why he invents the Ray in the first place, is to freeze time so that he can work up the nerve to talk to her.

He seems to have the attitudes of a teenager more than a thirty-year-old. He’s idealistic (granted, his ideals revolve around being a supervillain, but he still has the lofty goal of changing the world), awkward, and a little bit stalkerish. He’s cocky, as demonstrated by how he tells Moist that stealing the Wonderfluonium from a courier van will be like taking candy from a baby. He doesn’t have very good priorities – the girl who he’s been dreaming about for some time finally talks to him and is flirting with him, and he focuses on his heist instead. But despite how socially stunted he can seem at first, he is intensely devoted to things that he cares about. When Captain Hammer pushes Penny into the garbage, Billy tries to lay into him immediately, yelling at him about how Penny could have gotten hurt.

After Penny falls in love with Captain Hammer, Billy becomes increasingly bitter and desperate in his actions. His stalkerish tendencies increase, extending to following Penny on her dates with Captain Hammer. At the same time, however, now that the ice is broken and the formal introduction made between Billy and Penny, he finds it much easier to talk to her. They seem to genuinely enjoy one another’s company, as they enjoy cups of frozen yogurt and wait for their clothes to finish at the Laundromat. Beneath the shy, awkward loner, Billy is actually a pretty good friend. He listens to Penny, tries to give her advice, and sure, it’s all couched in the fact that he wants her desperately, but it’s obvious that, unlike Hammer, Billy genuinely cares about Penny.

There is one thing that remains the same about Billy (up until the end of Act II): even though he aspires to be a supervillain, he firmly believes that murder is neither “elegant” nor “creative.” It throws him for a loop at first when he gets the order from Bad Horse that he needs to murder someone in order to get into the Evil League of Evil. He considers murder inelegant and uncreative, but more than that he’s completely appalled when Moist suggests murdering someone who wouldn’t be a challenge, like a child or an old lady.

This attitude seems to change drastically when Captain Hammer pulls Billy aside and tells him that he’s basically just using Penny because he knows that Billy loves her. All qualms with murder are put aside (“This appeared as a moral dilemma / ... / ...you / Have shown me the light”), and he immediately begins construction on a Death Ray so that he can exact his revenge on Captain Hammer (and save Penny from him, as well). Nonetheless, when the time arrives and he actually has Hammer at his mercy and the Death Ray at Hammer’s head, he has to take a moment to give himself a pep talk before he can go through with it.

He repeats a phrase that Penny used to him earlier (“Head up Billy-buddy”), implying that he’s doing this for Penny, too, to save her from “Mr. Cheesy-on-the-outside”. This shows an intense dedication to causes that he believes in – he’s ready to break his cardinal rule and do something that he considers beneath him if it means ensuring the well-being of his best friend and the love of his life. “Brand New Day” makes it abundantly clear that Billy is not merely targeting Hammer because Hammer is his nemesis and Billy needs to kill someone to get into the ELE. It’s personal.

First Person:
Well, it’s not quite the technology that I’m used to, but you know what, it’ll have to do.

[Insert awkward clearing of the throat that he doesn’t think anyone can see.]

Did somebody call a doctor? Doctor Horrible, that is.

Can anyone tell me which way to get back to L.A.? I have important business to attend to. Villainy business. Important villainy business that’s kind of under a time constraint. I only have so much time to get this done, I don’t need to be stuck in a new city, so it would make my day if you could just tell me the quickest way back to L.A.

And better yet, if anyone knows where I could find approximately six feet of rebar and a pair of sturdy bolt cutters. I’d appreciate it.

I mean—

Do it because I, Doctor Horrible, tell you to!

Third Person:
Billy paced the platform agitatedly, his rubber boots scuffing along the platform as he went. He had no idea where he was. He wasn’t in Los Angeles anymore, that was for damn sure. He fished through his pockets to see what he had with him. There was some bits of wire, some tools. His all-in-one miniature screwdriver. His handheld heat ray/soft welding torch.

His stun ray was still back at the lab, as were all of his calculations. One of these would be easy to replace. The other would not.

Plus, his cell phone was getting absolutely no reception, which was just complete balls. He couldn’t even call Moist to come pick him up in the Horriblemobile. Or wire him a train ticket home. Or bring him his civilian clothes.

Damn it, he was still in his villain clothes.

His mind was racing, pacing left and right and left and right, up, down, problem solving ways to get himself out of this mess. He had to get back to L.A. He had to finish his death ray in time for the opening of the homeless shelter. He had to get rid of Captain Hammer, so that Penny would finally see that he was the one who loved her, not that egotistical pudding-for-brains bumbling idiot who called himself a superhero.

He was ripped out of his thoughts when he found something in his pocket that definitely wasn’t his. He pulled out a shiny watch and turned it over in his hands. There were more buttons on it than for a regular watch. He flicked open the cover and pressed one. A thin line appeared on the screen.

“...Huh.” The line jumped. “A voice recording function?” The line wobbled along with his voice. He thought for a moment longer.

“You know, maybe this won’t be so bad after all.”
