APPLICATIONS

Applications are processed weekly, every weekend. The cut-off time for the submission of applications is 11:59PST on Saturday.
✗ Before applying, please read the FAQ and Rules pages.
✗ Please submit your application with the journal you plan to use if you have one made already. If not, another journal is fine, but we prefer your intended journal so it makes for an easier time in granting access to the mod journal and the contacts page.
✗ For very long applications, we would ask you to please separate them into various comments so that they will not take up too much of the page.
✗ Please title your application as { [CANON/CANON OC/OC]CHARACTER NAME || Series Title || reserve/no reserve || X of X } in the subect header
IMPORTANT: Our application form was edited on September 07, 2015. Please use the revised form.
✗ If you are looking for an example of what an application should be like, please refer to the application here for an example of a canon character application, and here for an original character application.

A note for CR AU applications
Ruby City does allow previous game history/CR to be brought over on a case by case basis. If you want to include this in your application please add additional sections for PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT and PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY beneath the Personality and Background/History sections.

In these additional sections we would like to see a brief outline of your character's previous game history and how it potentially impacted on and altered their canon personality.

CHARACTER
Name: Fingolfin (Ñolofinwë)
Canon: The Silmarillion
Age: 3,426
Timeline: After his death by Morgoth's hands.
Items with character at canon point: Battered, bloody armor, torn robes and his sword, Ringil.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: I see no reason Aragorn and Fingolfin would interact; they are even further apart, family wise, than Eärendil and the Man. I might comment on Aragorn knowing of his presence or Fingolfin knowing of Aragorn, but that would be the end of it.

Personality:
"In that vast shadow once of yore
Fingolfin stood: his shield he bore
with field of heaven’s blue and star
of crystal shining pale afar.
In overmastering wrath and hate
desperate he smote upon that gate,
the Gnomish king, there standing lone,
while endless fortresses of stone
engulfed the thin clear ringing keen
of silver horn and baldric green."

Fingolfin is, like his brothers, a force that Arda was unprepared to harbor. His temper is less fiery than his eldest brother's, Fëanáro's, but it is present and once it is ignited, even Morgoth could not escape him unscathed. He injured the Vala seven times and gave him a permanent limp; thus it is safe to say that Fingolfin's anger is nothing to be toyed with once it has been earned (and it is usually earned when someone attacks/injures his family or his people).

Yet, for the majority of the time, he is a calm, logical Elf; particularly when he is dealing with political matters or matters that will/do affect many. He takes after Finwë, his father, in being steadfast and kind when he gives his friendship or his love. However when he encounters a difficult presence, he does not divert immediately to anger; instead, he becomes icy. Fingolfin can become like stone and he can be downright intractable.

Furthermore he is incredibly brave and selfless; a trait he passed onto his children in spades. He rode to encounter Morgoth on his own - much like how his son, Fingon, rescued Maedhros from the Thangorodrim. Instead of allowing his anger to overwhelm him and create chaos, he let it give him power to do what seemed impossible. Despite him dying from the effort, Fingolfin would do it again. His family and his people are worth the sacrifice.

On a less positive note, since his youth, he has possessed a sharp wit and a sharp tongue. He knows how to irritate and anger others and there was a time he did so simply for his own amusement. However he has matured since then and, now, he mainly uses his "gift" to gain an upper-hand with difficult acquaintances and his more cantankerous family members.

In the city, he will be shaken by his death - a particularly violent one considering Morgoth, more or less, crushed him. As such, he will be more hesitant than usual and spend a great deal of time seeming pensive. Yet his fëa has not been destroyed and he will regain his warmer, more playful qualities (as well as his icy and fiery qualities) as time passes.

Background: History.

Abilities:

❄ A skilled swordsman.

❄ Likely skilled with a bow too.

❄ A fine ruler/leader/king who can play the intricate games of diplomacy.

❄ I imagine he is not bad in the Forge either, though not as talented as Fëanáro.

Then there are his Elvish abilities:

❄ Elvish Sight: His sight is advanced - he can see farther than a normal Man or even a Dwarf or Hobbit.

❄ He is able to see quite well in the dark.

❄ Elvish Hearing: Like his eyes, his hearing is also enhanced. Sounds that might be inaudible to the ears of other races are clear to him.

❄ Elvish Agility: He can move quickly and without much (if any) audible sound. It is said that the Elves can even walk on snow without leaving the imprint of their feet behind.

❄ Agelessness: He is immortal and his appearance will always be "young" to mortal eyes.

❄ Immunity: He cannot contract illnesses, but he can be harmed by poisons or spells. (He also heals quicker than other races after being injured.)

❄ Elvish Stamina: He does not tire easily even after long treks or fierce battles.

❄ Elvish Reverie: He meditates instead of sleeping. Elves do not require slumber.

❄ Elvish Vitality: The elements do not effect him like they do other races.

❄ Elvish Supernatural Senses: He can sense the taint of evil even if it is only a vague presence.

❄ Elvish Affinity: He is fond of animals and can understand them with ease. The same holds true for plants.

Network/Actionspam Sample: If this is not acceptable, I am happy to write you a fresh sample!

Prose Log Sample: Fingolfin seeing to Maedhros after his rescue from the Thangorodrim.

The root of said anger likely developed early for him - as a result of having to deal with his elder brother's disdain over Fingolfin's very existence. Fingolfin could not help being the first son of Finwë's (their father's) second wife, but Fëanáro held that fact against him and blamed him for their father remarrying (a custom that was practically nonexistent amongst Elves). Instead of becoming a guilt-ridden victim, Fingolfin learned to stand, eye to eye and toe to toe with his brother, showing his anger in sarcastic, witty remarks meant to rile Fëanáro further.

Yet, since they were children, much has befallen the brothers and the rift between them has grown from one of petty disputes to a deep scar caused by Fëanáro's rash and deadly decisions. As his brother descends into madness, Fingolfin has felt his spirit strained. He understands, at last, that the petty arguments are - and never were - worthwhile. Time and experience have helped him to calm and he remains so for the majority of the time - allowing his logic to take precedence for the sake of his family and his people. In this, he takes after Finwë; with age, Fingolfin has become steadfast and kind to counteract his brother's madness and to repent for the many, many mistakes he made (towards his brother and others) because of his poor attitude in the past. As such, when he encounters a difficult presence, he does not divert immediately to anger anymore - or sarcastic, witty remarks; instead, he becomes icy. He will not allow himself to become emotionally invested in matters that will only rile his anger or hurt him again. He is simply too tired and too worn - a fact that is worsened after his demise.

As a result of the wisdom he has gained, towards his family, his friends and his people, he is incredibly brave and selfless; a trait he passed onto his children in spades. He rode to encounter Morgoth on his own - much like how his son, Findekáno, rescued Maedhros from the Thangorodrim. Despite him dying from the effort, Fingolfin would do it again. His family and his people are worth the sacrifice; they are worth any sacrifice and he is only sorry that he wasted so much time feeling spiteful in Aman (i.e. his first home).

Yet he has not lost his sharp wit and his sharp tongue - though he spends most of his time curbing the latter. Fingolfin knows how to irritate and anger others and there was a time he did so simply for his own amusement (and to vent his frustrations over Fëanáro's treatment of him). However since he has decided to turn over a new leaf (thanks to the many, many tragedies that have occurred on their journey to Arda and during their stay on Arda) he mainly uses his "gift" to gain an upper-hand with difficult acquaintances and his more cantankerous family members. He usually reserves such words for jests or as a tool to help someone see their own follies. He is a rather old Elf with plenty of experience to share and what is life without a generous dose of laughter and humor?

In the city, he will be shaken by his death - a particularly violent one considering Morgoth, more or less, crushed him. As such, he will be more hesitant than usual and spend a great deal of time seeming pensive (as he examines what went wrong and what became of his family afterwards). Yet his fëa has not been destroyed and he will regain all of his qualities - the good, the bad and the witty - in due time.
