A note for CR AU applications
Ruby City does allow previous game history/CR to be brought over on a case by case basis. If you want to include this in your application please add additional sections for PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT and PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY beneath the Personality and Background/History sections.

In these additional sections we would like to see a brief outline of your character's previous game history and how it potentially impacted on and altered their canon personality.

If it's a deal breaker to link this, please let me know and I'll have it up as soon as I can but I've seen a few linked ones on here even after the update so I'm unsure. I feel better knowing an app is up if it can be screened after reading though, if at all possible.

Aside that here it is!

CHARACTER
Character Name: Sebastian Moran
Canon: BBC Sherlock
Timeline: Shortly after “The Reichenbach Fall”
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A

Personality: Sebastian Moran is the best sniper in the world. Upon first meeting, anyone might be put off by the scars that cross his face, but then again, his rugged charms just might draw you in. He keeps his bleach-blonde hair slicked back most of the time, and his signature aviators cover emerald green eyes. Most often found with a cigarette dangling from his lips, he’s got a slow smile and a rough laugh that just might win you over. Watch your back though; never to be underestimated, he’s not a man to be crossed if you plan to survive.
He’s cool and calm under fire, sometimes quite literally. Even with a barrage of bullets flying over his head, he stays collected and gets the job done. His hands never shake, and if he has all the information to make a hit, he never misses. Whether it’s a half-mile shot from his beloved rifle or a knife in the back at close quarters, he’s the best man in a fight, as long as he’s on your side.
He’s a man of simple tastes, far preferring the taste of a cool beer than some fancy wine or high-priced whiskey. That said, he’s a firm believer in ‘waste not, want not’ and he won’t turn down any booze passed his way. He smokes like a chimney, but he lingers over each one, savouring its unique flavour. His favourite way to celebrate after a successful hit is a long shower, a beer, and a nice long nap. Not that he gets that very often.
He’s meticulous about his guns, and religiously cleans them after every hit, and sometimes just when he’s bored. It wouldn’t do to have his rifle jam because it was dirty, would it? He carefully inspects every piece of equipment before and after he uses it. His eye for detail was one of the first things that attracted Jim Moriarty to him in the first place. That, and the fact that he holds the record for the longest shot made by a single marksman both make him a very attractive employee to London’s biggest criminal mastermind.

History: Sebastian came from a troubled home, but these days, who doesn’t? His father was an ex-military man who beat submission into his son for the slightest offenses, and when he got drunk was a terror to behold. His mother was a weak woman, too frail and meek to protect her child from the rampages of her husband.
He joined the army at eighteen and quickly rose through the ranks to become a colonel. He was head of his own unit, until it all went wrong, of course. He got drunk on some very bad absinthe, spent three days in the middle of the mission pursuing a tiger, shot and killed said (protected) tiger, and then shot a subordinate when the man dared to question his leader’s authority. Needless to say, he was court- marshalled faster than you can say ‘tiger’ and sent home in disgrace.
He wandered around London a few months until he ran into a strange little man in a perfectly pressed suit, looking extremely out of place in the dive bar he’d chosen to take refuge in today. The enigmatic little Irishman offered him a job, and one thing turned into another. Now he lives in the same unbearably posh flat with Jim Moriarty as his ‘little live in’ (as Jim likes to mockingly call him), serving as his personal bodyguard as well as his favourite sniper and right hand man. He knows he’ll never leave Jim, even if he wanted to. He’d die first.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Brilliant sniper, but deeply scarred background. Also physical scarred from time spent in war and with Jim (boss gets handy with a knife) but those don’t slow him down at all.
Relationships to Canon Characters: Employee of Jim Moriarty

First Person: [He didn’t remember having fallen asleep... Jim was going to kill him if he knew he’d fallen asleep on a job! And the most important one too, the Fall, the conclusion to the game that had consumed Jim for weeks on end. The last thing he remembered, he was lying on his stomach in front of the window, waiting for the detective to jump, and now.... he scrubbed a hand across his face, looking around. He appeared to be on a train, and the only one on the train too. Hm. Alone on a train, and a quick glance out the window told him they’d not be stopping any time soon. He sank down in a seat.] Well this is annoyin’. Jim’s gonna be furious.
[He takes a moment to collect his thoughts, finding a strange bronze device on his wrist.] What the feckin hell is this? [He picks at the device, trying to get it off, without success. He sighs, figuring it can’t be that bad. It looks like a watch, anyway.]

Third Person: He was always meticulous about his hits, cleaning the gun ahead of time, oiling it perfectly to ensure a flawless job. But something had gone wrong this time, his gun hadn’t fired, and he had to let a very important target walk away.
He slunk home like a dog with its tail between its legs, fearing the punishment when he got home. Jim would be beyond furious at him for letting the ambassador get away. He dumped his gun bag inside the door and carefully took off his boots, never wanting to soil Jim’s white carpets. He was in enough trouble; he didn’t need to make it worse. He was hoping to get a beer to dull his senses just a little before he had to deal with Jim’s shrill voice yelling at him, but a call from the office told him it was not to be. He sighed and padded to Jim’s office in the back part of the flat, awaiting punishment.
He stood valiantly under Jim’s verbal abuses while the man screamed at him. “Yes boss,” he said tiredly for the thousandth time. “M’sorry, boss. Won’t happen again.” He looked up at him shyly, wondering how it was that a pocket-size Irishman managed to cow him on a regular basis. In any case, it was their arrangement and it was what worked for them. He sighed and retired to his basement sanctuary to clean the offending gun. He wondered what had gone wrong with it. After a few minutes of examining it, he found a little piece of paper jamming the firing mechanism. His brow furrowed and he pulled out the offending scrap.
On it was written- “I hope you clean your gun, tiger. JM xoxo’. Sebastian groaned and buried his head in his hands. Infuriating little bastard; Jim had clogged his gun on purpose! He sighed and just cleaned his rifle as usual. He wouldn’t say anything, not now, but he’d get back at Jim in some way. Maybe messing up his suits... oh, the possibilities were endless.

[personal profile] heartofahuntsman 2013-02-10 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:
By this point, it's possible you're looking at this app and wondering if I've lost my mind. But hear me out. There are many characters in the Universe of OUaT and each has their own role to play. The Wolf's place is at the Huntsman's side. Where others look at him and see an animal, a dumb beast, the Huntsman sees a loyal friend and a brother. They are equals. It is only his lack of speech capability that divides him from the rest of the storybrooke figures.

It is unclear why, but unlike other residents of Storybrooke, Wolf remembers the life they lived before. It is possible that the curse only affected the humans, but whatever the case, it is Wolf who ultimately guides Graham along the path to remembering who he is. Emma may have been the key to unlock the door, but Wolf was the one who pushed it open and tried to show Graham the way.

He is a loyal friend to the Huntsman and follows him, even into the thick of pub full of humans. He is no pet, nor loyal dog, but family. There is no reason for him not to stay at the side of his pack brother. While he may appear to be nothing more than a wolf at first glance, it is clear that this wolf is no ordinary beast. From the gleam of magic in his eye, to the clever mind he displays, he acts anything but wild.

In the world of fairytales, Wolf is the Huntsman's companion. Whether woods or human buildings, he can be found close at hand, if not directly at his side. While the people around may not notice, he and Huntsman share a connection, and they communicate easily with one another. The only time Wolf can not be seen at the side of his pack brother is when Graham is with Regina. Given Graham's love and concern for the wolves, it is likely this was a forced separation for the wolf's own protection.

In Storybrooke, Wolf is no less loyal to the man who can not remember him. He keeps a watchful, guardian eye on his pack brother, and when it appears that Graham is finally beginning to remember his old life, Wolf goes to him, and tries to lead him back to his heart. Tries to save his brother, through the difficulties of a communication barrier and a lifetime forgotten. And even without his memories, the connection between them lingers the same as the connections between Snow and Charming. The bond between brothers is a strong one, and not easily broken by time or distance.

Much like Toothless, Wolf displays an awareness level and intelligence parallel to that of the humans they both are bound to. Wolf's ethics and moralities do not lie in the same paths as a humans might. For Wolf, loyalty to the pack goes deeper than most humans would understand. Pack is closer than family, because it is survival, and not blood, which holds them together. They live their lives in a social hierarchy of complex interactions, based on mutual support and reliance.

While he is not overly fond of humans, he is also not frightened of them. He will walk fearless into a den of armed humans, without a trace of nervousness. He is cautious enough to hang back when there are humans around Graham, but he is not bothered by the opinions of any of those humans who are not Graham. He relies on the Huntsman, hunts with him, fights with him, and if need be, he would die with or for him.

I have read the FAQ, and I do know that generally speaking, any creature who can not interact with other members of the city by stopwatch is not going to be accepted, I am giving this a shot. The requirement of " sentient and able to communicate with the other residents of the city" is one that may be closely scrutinized here, and I completely understand this. I would like to simply offer a few words in mine and Wolf's defense. While Wolf is not capable of speech or typing, he is very clearly sentient. He is capable of logic, of discerning situations and determining ways to approach them, and he is clearly capable of getting his point across to the Huntsman/Graham and I believe I am capable of portraying him in a way that is both ic and will allow him to interact with others.

I understand, if after reading this app, he is still not considered a suitable character, but I can never know until I try, and I wanted to give him that chance.

My suggestion would be that he could wear his stopwatch like a collar.

JANE FOSTER | MCU | 2/3

[personal profile] bifroster 2013-02-12 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
PERSONALITY:

The two most vital parts of Jane’s personality is her curiosity and stubbornness.

Her curiosity for the world and how it works is the driving force of nearly everything she does. Since she was little, she loved looking up at the stars and asking questions, learning answers through others or her own means. While some kids took to sports or art, she took to science and studying with an unrivaled passion—and anything that was up in the sky was her favorite subject.

Some people contemplated that she often went beyond mere curiosity or average interest—it was like she had to know every detail about whatever knowledge she was seeking at the time. They’re not wrong. It’s a pure and honest kind of curiosity that sometimes consumes her: she’s not learning for some angle or agenda, or for anyone beside herself and the personal satisfaction of knowing, though sometimes proving that she was right to others is pretty rewarding as well.

All the same, she will not likely stop learning.

However, while some people encouraged her, like her parents did, there were others who did the exact opposite. This is where her stubbornness comes in.

Growing up with such a huge appetite for knowledge earned her a lot of attention, not all of it positive. Many of her classmates thought her odd for being so smart at an early age, and didn’t quite understand why she liked math of all things, or enjoyed being behind a book than on the playground. Some teachers would dismiss her questions, saying that there wasn’t enough time to answer them or that they had to be saved for another lesson. Needless to say, this caused endless frustration for her when she tried to explain herself or tried to get the question answered—making her seem disruptive at times when she would get into arguments about anything, not caring who she was arguing with.

Instead of letting this discourage her, she often steeled her resolve and moved on, remembering how her father told her that holding onto anger didn’t help anyone. She quickly learned which teachers would answer her or dismiss her, and alienated herself from her classmates who didn’t seem to understand her through lack of maturity or because they just didn’t like the subjects she enjoyed. This stubbornness became a part of her by the time she was in middle school, a definition of who she was.

She never took no for an answer, never let herself give up on a project or theory, even if she had to set them aside for a later date to work on it. If someone said she couldn’t do something, it just made her all that more determined to prove them wrong.

Underneath this bullheaded scientist is a much simpler girl: she likes to hang out with her friends and enjoys phone calls from her dad, likes good food, works hard for what she has and has done in her life, and likes not worrying about where her rent will come from.

Thanks to her somewhat military upbringing, she has a strong sense of duty and honor that is displayed when she goes to check on Thor after administering him to the hospital despite him being a total stranger and when she refused SHIELD’s hush money. She would never betray a friend or someone who earned her trust, nor would she do anything without a good reason—and even then she wouldn’t cross certain lines.

The thought of war, torturing someone, revenge, and vendettas are concepts she doesn’t fully understand, having not really experienced any of them from either side, but she does understand that they exist and sometimes are necessary, as unfair as they are. Some would say that this makes her a pacifist, but they didn’t see her back before she could control her anger and the impulse to tackle someone to the ground. She has never been afraid of a fight or getting into one if the reason behind it was justified.

Jane is far from perfect, though. More often than not, she lets her curiosity go too far and she gets into trouble for it, from asking the wrong person the wrong questions to going where she isn’t supposed to go, like private government facilities. She rarely lets a question drop and as said before, has interrupted many a class or lecture. While she has never been arrested, there are quite a few people who know not to allow her access to places if they don’t want “an outsider” to gain insider information, thanks to her keen eye and a habit to be drawn to trouble or vise versa.

Jumping into something too quickly is another one of her vices, be it a project she can’t quite handle with all of the other projects on her plate, or getting herself into a dangerous situation for the sake of gathering data. She has little to no fear at times, and will say or do things that a more cautious person wouldn’t dream of doing. So far, she has been lucky that her worst injury was a broken leg from a misstep on a small plateau. It worries the people who care about her greatly, as it seems like she has no sense of self-preservation and that she thinks that there are more important things than her life.

With her recent interactions with gods, super soldiers, and government agencies, this rashness and lack of self preservation has just come out more with the risks she is willing to take for what she wants and for others—though she is learning to control these impulses and make better, more careful decisions. It’s an odd process.

When she is not getting into trouble from it, her curiosity has her studying and observing well into the night, skipping means, and drinking too much coffee. She burns out from time to time, and is lucky that she has Erik and Darcy there to remind her that she is a human and not some sort of perpetual motion machine. Not that she has ever pushed herself too far, but there have been times where she has exhausted herself.

Jane also has a big, big heart that she would like to keep tightly wrapped up and hidden away, knowing how easily and badly she could be hurt or manipulated, but has yet to be really able to. At most, she knows when to be suspicious and cautious of people, but if someone is in danger or needs help, she is unable to say no and not lend a hand, and if someone lies well enough, she’ll fall for it. Her faith in humanity is almost unwavering, and despite betrayals from friends and coworkers alike, she stubbornly holds onto the ideal that people will do what is right, and that if given a choice, they will choose the better path. Not that she has met too many people who hold themselves up to this standard.

She tries to do what she can to not become jaded as more and more people prove that they are not always good and do not always prove to be trustworthy. She does want to be able to trust people without worry, but she is slowly becoming more pessimistic towards others, guarding her heart more closely as time goes on. All of this results in a bundle of insecurities towards friendship and romance, and making her tendency to give second chances and the benefit of the doubt all the odder.

Thor, during the short time he spend with her on earth, has given her back a lot of her faith in her work by just crash landing in the middle of the desert. His existence proves that everything she dreamed of when she was little were true and that all of the sacrifices she made were not in vain—that there were other worlds and peoples out there, and that there was a way to reach and meet them. She now has her drive and focus back, increased tenfold now, and she’ll be forever thankful for meeting him.

Still, her lingering trust issues will undoubtedly affect any future relationship that becomes “serious” in her book, no matter who it is with.

FIRST PERSON:

[Jane comes onto the network, hair blown all over, looking scared—]

Guys! Guys!

[There is an explosion in the distance and she ducks, the view of the communicator blurring for a few moments. Debris is scattered about, and in one corner of the view screen… yes, that is the fire pit she had in front of her home. Something threw it across the street, denting it horribly as it bounce and rolled off.]

I don’t know what happened, but—

[There is a huge, deep roar.]

I am really, really sorry! I think I made it mad! But I really could use some…!

[Then the feed is cut off and there is not even any static.]

THIRD PERSON:

Jane is not sure what is going on—

Oh, who is she kidding? Of course she knows what is going on. She kept her eyes opened when she initially felt that tug, kept her eyes wide opened when she was on that train, and made sure to observe every little thing that she could. She doesn’t know any specifics, but she does know she is going somewhere that doesn’t exist on Earth and she knows that she kind of does and does not want to go there at the same time.

If she thinks hard, she doesn’t even remember buying a ticket. She doesn’t have any bags with her. There are more oddities of this whole trip out of nowhere, but there is nothing she can do once the train pulls into the station and she feels compelled again to move and get off. She doesn’t like the feeling, as if someone has wrapped a rope around her waist and keeps tugging, even as she mentally tries to dig in her heels against it.

The train pulls away, accelerating quickly, before she can get on again.

Looking around, she does her best to observe as much as she can before she wanders off somewhere. A city has to have people, and someone should know what is going on. Why she was brought here, why they were brought here. Perhaps she was dreaming, or like in a science fiction novel, there was a tear in the fabric of the universe and she slipped through. Maybe someone with powers (like Thor, though in a more magical sense) created this place in response to the tear and those tugs were just to get them to safety.

Or it could be something more sinister.

“Okay,” she said to herself, one hand on her hip as the other is holding the pocket watch she found in… where else? Her pocket. “Let’s find out why we’re here.”

CHARACTER

Character Name: {…} [Zombie, Ringo, Gallahad, Imhotep, whatever you feel like calling him]
Canon: Hanna is Not a Boy’s Name
Timeline: Chapter 3, just as Tibenoch’s house locks up but before Tibenoch whips out his pistol from his pants.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A

Personality: First off, there are a few very important things to know about {…}. First, he’s dead and has been for about a decade. It’s very noticeable and yes, he’s aware he’s green. Second, he has no memory of who he was before he joined the ranks of the living-impaired, not even his name (he thinks it might have started with a D or an S. Maybe. He’s really not picky about what he’s called.). These are things he’s okay with. He’s had a lot of time to think over the past ten years of zombiehood and he decided a long time ago that he had no strong desire to be alive again. Also no, he has no desire to eat brains whatsoever.

He’s certain he’s become a different someone since being dead than he was when he was alive. He feels no real connection to his previous life and that makes him feel a little guilty. He feels like there was a promise he made to someone, a promise to not just up and walk away one day without a word that he’s made to Hanna, that he undoubtedly broke when he was killed.

{…} isn’t much of a conversationalist. He’ll speak up when he has something to say or when he’s spoken to but for the most part he keeps his dialogue internal and let’s Hanna do most of the talking. When he does decide to speak up the things he says are usually of a snarky and deadpan nature. Showing emotion isn’t really his kind of thing either. He certainly feels them, especially when showing remorse or concern for others, but his tone of voice and lack of expression change can easily lead someone to this he’s being facetious. Hell, his smiles are so infrequent his friend and partner Hanna even keeps a tally of how many times he does it. He’s made a mental note to work on that.

On the whole, {…} is a laid back guy. He’ll let other people handle the whole social interaction thing, doesn’t flinch when he’s getting limbs sewn back on but if things seem to be going south he’ll step in to keep things civil. He’s cool with being the sidekick to Hanna’s leader.

Speaking of Hanna, he is easily the person {…} feels closest to. When he finally decided to do something with his afterlife he sought out the Hanna with the young paranormal investigator’s business card in hand despite not remembering where he got it. Since joining up with him as his partner, {…} has become very protective of Hanna. This is not surprising when you realize exactly how much danger Hanna puts himself in when working a case and how little sense of self-preservation he has. The guy needs someone to keep an eye on him and carry him to his back alley doctor friend from time to time. When trouble starts {…} will always spring to Hanna’s aid first before taking the time to think. In a one-shot Christmas comic not directly connected to the running story-line, he makes a comment about how humans are social creatures and benefit from each other’s company. Since befriending Hanna he’s realized how human he still in in that respect.

But most importantly he trusts Hanna unquestioningly and would do just about anything to keep him safe

First Person: Test drive meme thread

Third Person: The zombie had had an aversion to anything wet for as long as he could remember. He supposed it was only natural, what with the threat of rot and all. Even after ten years he was still remarkably intact and he preferred to keep it that way.

That was why he felt the captors had made an unfortunate choice to bring him to the city in the middle of February. He didn't mind the snow in itself. It was nice to look at and the cold certainly didn’t bother him. It was just that threat of wet and decomposition that made him cautious to venture outside too often.

But he couldn't stay inside the rest of the winter if he was even here that long. Well, technically he could, it wasn't as if he needed to go out and get supplies for himself. But he’d become accustomed to spending his nights wandering and he wasn't going to deny he was more social than his stoic nature would let on. Even the odd looks he'd no doubt get would be better that solitude. The damp was just a threat he’d have to accept.

If he'd still needed to breathe he would have inhaled deeply as he pulled on his gloves and left his residence to face winter. Oh the things he would do to keep his mind occupied.

CHARACTER
Name: Sam Winchester
Canon: Supernatural
Timeline: After 4x07 It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A

Personality:
Sam is a warm-hearted hunter who tends to empathize and show compassion towards the people he meets and helps. He often takes the lead in questioning victims and often tries to offer them some kind of comfort or kind word after a traumatic event. He tends to choose his words carefully and pick his battles, though he has been known to exhibit the trademark Winchester stubbornness when fighting or holding a grudge.

Sam tends to be more open-minded when it comes to accepting people and things than his brother, leading him to come to the conclusion that the world is more gray than strictly black and white. Even though Sam often demonstrates more sensitivity than Dean, he is not afraid of confrontation and can be aggressive if he feels like he should push an issue, voice his opinion or is convinced that he is doing the right thing. In extreme cases, he believes that the means justifies the end, and will work relentlessly to justify something to himself and others if it means that it helps or saves others.

He can come across as more than a little self righteous and sometimes entitled. Especially when he believes that he possesses skills and knowledge that can get the job done better. When he is angry he tends to tense up and lash out with words aimed to show strong reason, or when that fails, stronger emotions. He has no problem going off and solving a problem on his own if he can't get the backing of others. The takes a strong responsibility for those around him and tends to take things too seriously rather than too lightly. He is also the first to blame himself when things go wrong.

For the most part, Sam believes that there is good in himself and in the world at large. This makes him more willing to give people a chance, though he is anything but naive. For the most part, he tries to hope for the best and be prepared for the worst, which is a very different approach than his brother usually takes to things.

He values his independence and the ability to think on his own, but is also afraid of losing the acceptance and love of his brother, which he desperately needs. The last three years have stripped away the possibility of a normal life outside of hunting and the death of his brother only strengthened his dedication to fighting and beating demons any way he can.

Where am I? Where's my brother?

[He pauses and takes a deep breath, letting it out slowly.]

You know, I never thought there'd come a day when I actually found myself wanting to be an atheist. Congratulations. After everything, and I mean everything, I now wish there wasn't a God. Or any of you.

Third Person: (Sample taken from a previous game.)

Apocalypse. Angels. Antichrist. Nothing that Dean had said over the journals or now in person was making any sense to Sam. That combined with the fact that his brother looked way more worn and beaten down than Sam had ever seen made Sam wonder if there was something really wrong. Plus, Dean had more than enough sense not to be spouting words like antichrist around a bunch of strangers that had woken up in the same deserted town that they had. One of the first rules of hunting was not singling yourself out and as far as he could tell Dean had been doing just that. Just because they knew the Yellow Eyed Demon wasn't behind this didn't mean that Lilith wasn't. For all they knew, she'd stuck them here so that they wouldn't be able to find a way out of Dean's deal.

Not that there weren't other possibilities. Who was this Castiel person and how did he know the Trickster? The Trickster could bend reality, but did it have the power to pull people from different times? It didn't make any sense. Neither did the fact that there were people here that knew them. People that he didn't remember meeting and knew things about Sam that he wouldn't have ordinarily shared with anyone else. They needed to get to the bottom of this and then get out. So why Dean was suddenly acting like a mental case was beyond him.

As he pulled him towards a back booth and away from the small gathering of people he studied his brother's movements and eyes. He was moving fine and his pupils weren't dilated, so it wasn't a concussion or drugs. He released his arm only when they got to the back of the diner. "Dean, what the hell is going on?" Sam asked, studying his face. "What antichrist incident? What are you talking about? We just buried Doc Benton less than a day ago." He had to bite his tongue not to mention that they also might have buried Dean's only chance to escape the deal. "And why are you suddenly in biblical mode? Angels, apocalypse, antichrist? All you need is a bell and a sandwich board that says 'The End is Near'."

[ CANON ] Kariya Matou || Fate/zero || reserved || 2 of 4 sorry i lied

[personal profile] trashkind 2013-02-16 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: The first impression one would get upon meeting Kariya Matou, at least before the events of Fate/zero’s canon, would be that he really isn’t anything special. His appearance is typically nondescript, and his mannerisms tend towards being pleasant, but in an understated, distant sort of way. Though he can be straightforward and frank, he tends towards being non-confrontational with most people; Kariya is someone who has made a conscious effort to live by a mantra of “don’t raise your eyes, don’t be a bother to anyone,” and for the most part it seems to have worked. As a freelance report writer who dislikes anything too fancy or extravagant and whose only real indulgences are his photography hobby and his tendency to take short travel breaks, one could say that Kariya is almost painfully ordinary.

In short, he is nothing like what you would expect a man from a long line of mages to be.

Kariya’s decision to live the way he does wasn’t just a case of his own personality naturally dictating things; it’s also a conscious rejection of everything about the world of magecraft. Bluntly put, at best Kariya does not even see the point in it; at worst, he’s actively repulsed and disgusted by everything to do with it. From his perspective, being normal and living peacefully is a welcome escape. As with most opinions this strong, there is a good reason behind Kariya’s revulsion for magic, and that would be his family. Although the Matou have been magi for centuries, Kariya is actually the first in many generations to be born naturally capable of magic; unfortunately for him, his family’s particular brand of magecraft is nothing short of horrific torture for those subjected to training under it, and the family head a sadistic, twisted old magus whose only concern is in achieving true immortality. All that considered, and inferring the sort of atmosphere Kariya would have been surrounded by growing up, it is no surprise that sometime in his teens, he chose to reject becoming the inheritor of the Matou family magic and instead cut all ties with the family he hated, hoping that any chance of reviving the line of magic would die with him. Not only did Kariya run out of fear, wanting to be free of the world that disgusted him so much, he also had no desire to put any potential wife or children through the hell of living in the Matou family.

His desire for his loved ones to remain safe and happy is a large part of what drives him, and hearing about that happiness being threatened is also one of the few things that can ignite his temper. Kariya is naturally a little hot-blooded and ruled more by his heart than his head, but he usually tries to keep a lid on things due to his desire to avoid rocking the proverbial boat. Generally speaking, his temper has two main triggers; the first being anything that even remotely threatens those he truly cares for, and the second being anything whatsoever to do with his family. This contrasts in an almost jarring way with his seemingly easy-going attitude to issues others may find horrifying – it’s not that he doesn’t care, exactly, so much that almost nothing else seems quite as horrifying to him as it should after growing up in a house with a basement full of parasitic Crest Worms. Kariya may offer his sympathy and even his help, but for him to truly care about a cause, it has to be personal for him in some way; only then will he throw himself into it without any hesitation. In canon, this comes in the form of Sakura, the young daughter of his childhood friend Aoi Tohsaka, being handed over to the Matou family; the idea of the innocent girl he cares for so much being abandoned to a terrible fate, at the hands of his family no less, is horrifying enough for him to immediately begin to try winning Sakura’s freedom.

As you may have guessed, Kariya can be self-centered. He often has trouble seeing other people’s perspectives on things, especially when they directly clash with his; for example, he can’t understand how anyone would see the lifestyle of a mage as a good thing, and Tokiomi Tohsaka’s logic for giving his daughter away to the Matou – that a child with magical potential as strong as hers needs the protection and tutoring a strong, well-established magus family can provide – goes completely over Kariya’s head. From Kariya’s perspective, Tokiomi is either knowingly and cruelly causing suffering to his wife and daughters, or else he is holding the world’s biggest Idiot Ball; it doesn’t occur to him that Tokiomi just might not possess all the information Kariya does about the situation. Despite his tendency to only care about things in his immediate circle, however, one could hardly say that Kariya is selfish. He’s someone with a great deal of love to offer the people he comes to care for, and has a soft spot for children that’s evident in the way he dotes on Rin and Sakura. He can also be very protective of these people, and he’s a man who would be willing to sacrifice literally everything he has for the sake of a chance for their happiness; his health, his sanity, even his life.

Needless to say, this makes Kariya someone who possesses more courage than one would expect from someone with such a carefully maintained appearance of normality. A person would have to have some degree of bravery within them not only to leave a family like the Matou, but to then willingly return to them ten years later and knowingly put themselves through a year of torment that would inevitably end in death, all for the sake of a little girl. The problem is that when Kariya acts on his bravery, it often crosses the line straight into recklessness or foolhardiness, something that happens with increasing frequency as he loses his grip on his mind during the events of canon.

Someone that requires special mention for how much she influences Kariya as a person is his childhood friend, Aoi Tohsaka. Three years his senior, Aoi is someone who has looked out for Kariya since they were both small, and they were once very close; as his oldest and possibly one of his only friends, Kariya cares for her deeply. However, this is complicated by the fact that Kariya’s feelings for her run deeper than friendship, even after her marriage. Kariya genuinely loves Aoi and wishes for her happiness; it’s for that reason that he peacefully gave up pursuing her when she accepted Tokiomi’s proposal. Of course, that doesn’t help with his lingering feelings for her, and he’s aware of that; he consciously tries to keep a respectful distance between them because by his own reckoning, he knows it isn’t his place. Indeed, in the anime Aoi, despite being his childhood friend, is the only person we see the otherwise very informal Kariya address with the “-san” honourific, indicating this distance. Even so, Aoi – or at least, the idea of Aoi – has been a sort of emotional crutch for Kariya over the years, and he has subconsciously placed her on a bit of a pedestal. And despite his very best and genuine attempts to let her live her own life, Kariya is still only human; deep down he harbours tiny feelings of resentment and jealousy towards Tokiomi, though he’s not even aware himself that he holds these feelings inside him. Indeed, it might not have ever been an issue had Tokiomi not misguidedly given Sakura to the Matou family and indirectly set the events in motion that lead to Kariya’s physical and mental decline.

Personality (continued): About that: as has already been mentioned Kariya’s quest to save Sakura from becoming the heir to the Matou brand of thaumaturgy has horrific consequences for him. The deal he makes with Zouken during the prologue is simple; a straightforward exchange of Kariya for Sakura, with the condition that Sakura will only be released if Kariya manages to win the Fourth Holy Grail War. The catch – and there is literally no way to put this delicately – is that since Kariya has never trained a day in his life, the only way for him to become enough of a magus in the space of a single year to summon a Servant to fight for him during this war is to have numerous Crest Worms implanted in his body. While expanding his magic circuits greatly, the worms also eat away at his body from the inside, and ironically place more strain on him whenever he casts magic.

It goes without saying, then, that after a year of enduring such pain, it’s not just Kariya’s body that changes for the worse. Though still fundamentally a decent person, he is outwardly more reserved and taciturn than before and tends to avoid people, if only for the problems his now somewhat terrifying appearance would cause. Thanks to the constant pain he is in and also Crest Worms having literally eaten parts of his brain, Kariya is also now more prone to emotional outbursts when triggered and is on a much shorter fuse, having much less of a hold on his temper. Since he knows all too well that he’s existing on borrowed time, he also becomes a lot more reckless when it comes to trying to get what he set out to do done, caring little for any sort of strategy.

His determination to accomplish this becomes frighteningly single-minded, to the point where saving Sakura from her fate and killing Tokiomi become the only real purposes he has for what’s left of his life – to the extent of ignoring the threat of a large monster created by one of the other Servants in favour of sending his own Servant to fight Tokiomi’s while confronting Tokiomi himself at the same time. Whether it was his original intention or not, by the time of the Grail War, getting revenge on Tokiomi by killing him becomes just as important to Kariya as his goal of rescuing Sakura. It’s easier to survive putting yourself through terrible pain if you have someone to blame and get angry at, and other than Zouken, Tokiomi, who gave away his own daughter to the Matou, is the obvious choice. What started as small seeds of resentment becomes fully-fledged hatred, and the Kariya of the Grail War now takes a vicious and unstable kind of pleasure in causing any kind of humiliation or throwing any kind of spanner in the works for the Tohsaka magus. Kariya also develops a certain amount of loathing towards himself; he blames himself just as harshly for Sakura’s situation as he does Zouken and Tokiomi, reasoning that if he had just accepted his fate eleven years beforehand instead of running away, Sakura could have carried on living happily with her mother and sister.

Ultimately as the Grail War wears on, Kariya progressively loses more and more of his grip on his own sanity to the point where he begins losing sight of himself and everything that he once held dear, with only his twin goals of Save Sakura And Kill Tokiomi Before I Die to cling to. His fragile mental and emotional state combined with his single-minded desire to see these two goals through makes him an easy target for manipulation by others since he no longer has the ability to really perceive when he’s being duped, something that Kirei Kotomine is able to mercilessly exploit to increase Kariya’s suffering and unhinge his mind even further. Once Kariya’s mind starts breaking down completely, he even becomes capable of hurting those closest to him when triggered the wrong way; all it takes during a moment of Kotomine-engineered misunderstanding is for Aoi to say something that is so out of place with Kariya’s remaining perception of her that his mind briefly snaps – for long enough to lead to some truly tragic consequences.

The real tragedy of Kariya Matou is that his slow descent into insanity reveals as much about him as it destroys; although it could never be denied that his self-sacrificial efforts were genuine and whole-heartedly meant, there are more selfish layers to his actions that Kariya himself neglects, practicing some pretty thorough self-deception as a protective measure. It’s only during his final moments when his body and mind finally give out completely that his deepest, suppressed wish for himself – to be a family with Aoi, Sakura and Rin – is embraced in the form of a final, delusional vision.

Perhaps it’s kinder that way.

First Person: Thread samples: one and two!

Third Person: Shinto was just as busy as he remembered it. Well. “Remembered it,” was hardly the right phrase, considering Kariya had just been here not even two hours ago. The crowds bustling about the place on their comings and goings even as the sun was going down gave the whole place the feel of an overactive beehive.

It was a perfect match for his own agitated restlessness.

The area down by the suspension bridge was a little quieter, just as it always was, but it didn’t help. He’d come down here to think, to try and clear his head, but his thoughts weren’t so much ticking as they were racing.

He couldn’t get the tears he’d seen in Aoi’s eyes out of his mind. Nor Rin’s miserable attempts to mask her sadness by playing her troubles away. Trying their hardest to accept something unacceptable, because that was what was expected of them.

And Sakura…

Kariya didn’t want to imagine what Sakura could be going through even at that very instant; trying to made his stomach turn. He knew better than almost anyone else what Zouken was capable of – the thought of Sakura’s shy smile and soft voice bearing the full brunt of that vampire’s malice was too much to bear.

It can’t even have been that long, Kariya thought bitterly, his hands balling into fists. If he’d come back even a few days earlier, he could have put a stop to this. He was sure of it. He would have planted himself in front of the Tohsaka house and refused to let them hand Sakura over—

No. Maybe he could still put a stop to this.

There wasn’t any other option, not for him. He needed to. Aoi and Rin’s hands were tied through no fault of their own, but Kariya – he was the one with the Matou blood flowing through his veins. He couldn’t stand idly by and let the Matou family drag an innocent child into their disgusting affairs. Especially when she was just being forced into the hole he’d forced his own way out of. (Aoi hadn’t said so in so many words, but he knew she was right all the same.) If he walked away from this, how could he say he was any better than the rest of his whole rotten bloodline?

Kariya took a deep breath. Pushing himself off the riverside railing, he turned towards the suspension bridge.

For the first time in ten years, he began to cross it.
