CHARACTER
Name: Orphaner Dualscar
Canon: Homestuck
Age: Not established in canon, but I think he's probably a couple of hundred sweeps old.
Timeline: Immediately after his death at the hands of the Grand Highblood.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A

Personality:

Dualscar is an intelligent troll, with centuries of battle experience, making him an excellent tactician and commander. He is a loyal - possibly fanatically loyal - subject of the Empire, and definitely loves his power and prestige. He is a sea dweller, making him second in blood only to the Condesce herself, and that is a fact that he takes great pride and pleasure in.

He believes strongly in the essential rightness of the hemospectrum, in the inherent superiority of his blood over others, and that lowbloods are essentially intelligent animals who need a strong hand to guide them. They are tools to be used for the purpose for which they were created - to serve, to fight where directed, to die if they are not useful, or become unmanageable. Part of this belief is simply due to his upbringing, and partly because if he were to accept that lowbloods - in their numbers - were equal to sea dwellers, he would lose everything that he has in life. After all, he stands at the pinnacle of troll society, and he will push off anyone who tries to threaten his position, and not care if they fall to their deaths. His moral compass is survival of the fittest, and he is very fit.

Dualscar, being a highblood troll, has little to no conscience when it comes to murder or destruction. If someone annoys him, he may kill them. He has the inherent right to do so, because of who he is, and by the moral compass of his race there is no reason for him to feel guilty. He has murdered thousands of lusi, orphaning an equal number of trolls - and likely dooming them if they can't take care of themselves - as well as many thousands of trolls, either directly or indirectly in battle. It's possible that he has wiped out entire civilizations, as his armies conquered worlds and brought them under his Empress' heel.

All that being said, Dualscar is certainly not devoid of emotion or personal pain of his own. He is a very lonely person, isolated because of his position and because of the demands of his society. He doesn't really understand redrom - so focused on being the strongest and keeping his position against war, competition, and potential assassination, that he can't imagine how someone could weaken themselves enough to be pitied, and not be killed. He sees betrayal at every turn, and is honestly frightened of intimacy. So the only way in which he can feel a connection with another individual is through hatred and violence, yet this only fulfils him to a certain degree. Though he doesn't understand why, his life is empty and lonely, which only makes him more emotionally messed up.

This loneliness makes him an extremely jealous, needy lover. He can't stand that someone who is literally his whole world - Mindfang - seems to be happy to throw him aside on a whim. She has had many lovers, while he has had very few, and he is far more devoted to the relationship than she seems to be. Part of this disparity is played up by Mindfang purely because she knows it gets to him, but a lot of it is real. She enjoys her rivalry with him, but is fine with tossing him aside, while Dualscar's jealousy that she might choose a worthless slave over him (even though she actually HASN'T) drives him straight to his death. Though it is not normal for trolls to be exclusive - they are supposed to have romance in four different categories with a total of five different other trolls! - Dualscar is a monogamist in a polygamist society. At least, he demands monogamy from his multiple partners, and in that he's inevitably disappointed.

Background: General plot info Info on Dualscar on this page

Abilities: Dualscar is an experienced military commander, and an accomplished fighter, both with the sword (headcanonly) and his rifle, Ahab's Crosshairs (canonly). He can breathe water, as he has gills, and (unlike Eridan) he is at home in both the water and the air.

Note: Before I link my samples, I want to add a note. When I began playing Dualscar at Vatheon, we had not yet seen Cronus in Homestuck. Accordingly, I developed Dualscar purely with reference to Eridan's personality and extrapolated from there.

When Cronus was introduced, I was pleased to see that my interpretation of Dualscar answered well with the way Cronus was, and I didn't have to throw out my headcanon. However, there was a major difference in quirk. As such, the quirk shown in these samples will not be exactly the way I will play him at Ruby City. I will be using Cronus' quirk, with vw and wv, I will not be dropping terminal g's as Eridan does, and but I will use proper grammar and capitalization in text posts, because he is an adult, though Cronus and Eridan both use all lower case.

Otherwise, you can take these samples as an accurate reflection of how I intend to play Dualscar in Ruby City. Personality-wise, he's the same.

First Person: First Person Sample

Third Person: Prose Sample

And just to show his quirk, because I'm lazy but I happen to have this available, which I wrote for another app that didn't work out:

Bonus Sample

[The video has obviously been staged. Dualscar stands before the camera, in full battle regalia. His armour has been polished - by Eridan, most likely - to a high purple sheen. His fins are hung with gold rings, and his fingers glitter with rings as well.

He folds his arms across his chest and inhales]

People of this prison vworld, I'm here to address those vwho, like me, vwhere abducted from your owvn hivwes. I'm not in the least bit interested in hearing from our prison guards, or the current 'rules' of this freakish place. So listen to me, prisoners.

Vwe may not vwant to be here, but here is vwhere vwe are, and vwhere vwe'll stay until vwe find a vway off this messed up vworld. There are many dangers here, including vwarious monsters vwho periodically decide to attack the place.

Or is he looking to create his own personal army, to rival that of the city's?] This is our home until vwe can escape it. Are any of you courageous enough to followv me into battle?

Vwe'll see.

[He clicks off the video, but there's a locked text message communicated to Eridan alone]

Eridan, meet me at the usual place.
It's time for you to begin your intensivwe military and leadership training.
You'll be commanding the second platoon, after all.

[CANON] DICK GRAYSON || DC Comics || no reserve || 2 of 4

[personal profile] niqhtwinq 2013-11-16 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Having been born and raised in a circus can have an interesting effect on someone’s personality, as evidenced by one Dick Grayson. He was basically bred for the center lights, and can often come off as a show-off. Body language is his strong point; where words might fail him, his body will fill in the story. He’d rather do a couple of flips off of a balcony than have to explain himself in any length with words.

Dick is also very honest and wears his emotions on his sleeves. He’s not very good at lying, and doesn’t like to anyway. His heart is huge and he loves almost everyone he meets. It’s very rare for him to find someone he honestly just flat out hates. With close friends and family, he tends to be really touchy-feely and he doesn’t realize it. Occasionally he might cross a line with someone and get too close, but it’s an honest mistake and he doesn’t mean to get too far into anyone’s personal space or business.

Despite being the adopted son of the Dark Detective, Dick isn’t exactly a thinker. It’s much harder for him to think things through completely and he isn’t as logical as the others in his life. He’s much more simple-minded, a whatever goes kinda guy. That being said, he does have a strong sense of justice and does what he can to crack down on those who do wrong to the weaker folk.

As honest as he is, it can sometimes be easy to step on other people’s toes; he gets too close and says speaks his mind when others might not agree. He tends to move before he speaks, and he speaks before he thinks. . . only to realize he might have hurt someone along the way after it’s all said and done. Because of this, he can sometimes lose the people he holds most dear and it breaks him apart.

Training with the Dark Knight also made him into an excellent leader. Dick Grayson has years of experience being a team leader, to the point that he almost hates the role. But he knows when it’s needed and he isn’t afraid to step up to the plate. He has a wonderful way of instilling confidence in those around him and many people look up to him because of it.

Unfortunately, the main qualification to being a part of the BatFamily is that you’re really screwed in the head. Dick Grayson, despite being quite a leader, also suffers from confidence issues. He’s never quite sure what he’s doing is the right thing, or if he’s overstepping any lines and getting himself in trouble. His entire life, he’s had large shoes to fill with his parents in the circus and then being adopted by Bruce Wayne. Even out of the costume, he’s the ward of one of the richest men in the world. Public light is always on him, and while he doesn’t mind it, there’s always a dark shadow in the back of his mind nagging away at him. Dick never feels like he’ll be able to take the role he’ll need to when the time comes.

In the end, the most important thing on Dick Grayson’s list is to care for his close family and friends. Sometimes to a fault - he won’t hesitate to put himself on the line for someone important to him. It’s truly the people in his life that make him happy and he strives to make sure they’re safe and sound, no matter what the cost.

[CANON] DICK GRAYSON || DC Comics || no reserve || 3 of 4

Background: Wikipedia!

Abilities: Dick is extremely well versed in basically every form of martial arts imaginable. He is also extremely agile, having grown up within a circus and tends to lean towards showy acrobatic moves. He also has quite a few gadgets and gizmos that help him get around, such as a grapple gun, and he enjoys swinging from rooftop to rooftop as his main source of transportation.

First Person: Over at the test meme!

[CANON] DICK GRAYSON || DC Comics || no reserve || 4 of 4

[personal profile] niqhtwinq 2013-11-16 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
Third Person: Consciousness was a complicated thing. It took many stages to completely come to. First was the basics of existence; it felt like his body was floating in space with no surroundings, unable to grab on to anything. Then was vision, endless black fading away to show him what was around him. After that, sensation began to return, numbness in his fingertips replaced by a dull ache. The world around him was swimming as he became self aware and his memories filled his brain like the contents of an entire wine bottle being poured into one measly glass.

He sat up and groaned, raising an unsteady hand to his head. The floor shook and it jostled him the rest of the way to complete consciousness. Quickly, he took inventory of the setting - windows, empty seats, a long aisleway. It didn’t take long for him to realize he was in a train car with the way everything rattled and creaked quietly. It was a familiar feeling.
’The hell? What have you gotten yourself into now, Grayson?’ he thought to himself.

The last thing Dick Grayson remembered wasn’t pleasant. His beloved city, Blüdhaven, had been freshly flattened by only God knows what. An atomic bomb? It was probable. Who, how and why were questions that had yet to be answered. All Grayson knew was that the fallout had made his eyes burn and his skin sting and every breath felt like his lungs were pin cushions.

There wasn’t much left of the place he had called home. Plenty of dead bodies lined the streets, which he dragged one by one to the edge of the city to place in a large heap. Occasionally he’d find someone alive, but they usually died before he could get them anywhere that might be considered safe. Dick Grayson himself was ignoring pleas from those that knew him, telling him not to dive head first into the fallout. But he wouldn’t listen to them - he couldn’t listen to them. Blüdhaven was his duty. He was bound to protect it no matter what. Even if it killed him.

As the hours ticked by, little by little he could feel the energy being sapped out of him. He didn’t care. Like a captain that went down with his ship, he’d go down with his city.

Dick pulled a young girl out of some rubble and was carrying her to safety when suddenly his world went flat, his face was all too close to the crumbled street beneath him and his vision faded to black. He relaxed and welcomed it, thinking at the time that he had reached the end.

What happened between then and now, he didn’t know. Obviously he wasn’t dead yet. Some piece of him buried deep inside was disappointed. But, Dick Grayson could only do what he did best - look up, keep his eyes forward and move.

He wasn’t sure where this train was taking him, and staring out the window wasn’t very helpful. It was pitch black out and all he could see in the window was his own reflection. There was a large open sore on his cheek, caused by radiation no doubt. A heavy sigh left his lips and he shifted to get comfortable. The only thing left was to wait and see where the train would take him.

One thing at a time.

CHARACTER
Name: November 11 (aka Jack Simon aka Mr. Smith aka who knows what else)
Canon: Darker than Black
Age: Given the implied timeline of his career, it's likely he's in his late 30s.
Timeline: If it's possible, I'd like to take him from towards the end of episode 22 ("City Under Crackdown, Moist with Tears Part 2" yes the episode titles are that overwritten). After he's confronted Decade and been shot, but before he actually...dies from those gunshots.
(If this isn't feasible, I can pick another canon point.)
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: n/a

Personality:
Conventional wisdom holds that Contractors such as November 11 are purely rational beings, lacking in all emotion, interested only in themselves, and retaining what personalities they might have only out of habit.

This is not entirely accurate.

It's true that Contractors loose most, if not all, of their emotions, frequently becoming extremely logical and self-interested. And November lives up to that, for the most part. He takes pride in being a Contractor. He makes rational decisions. He plans in order to gain the most from situations. He is loyal because it makes sense to exercise a certain amount of loyalty- it makes it easier to gain from the cooperation of those you are loyal to.

But over time Contractors can regain some emotion, some illogical or selfless motivations. Over time people you know well can become friends. November would say that he always acts on his own behalf, but he has grown capable of acting on behalf of those he has become close to. As for who he can become close to, it's mostly people whose intelligence and skills he can respect. His teammates, April and July, aren't as rational or communicative as he likes to be. But he recognizes their ability and reliability, and works closely with them as a formidable unit who may also be "friends." He's also seen to develop something like a friendship with Misaki Kirihara, whose skill and devotion as a professional he can respect and trust.

November himself is extremely intelligent and observant. He seldom enters a situation without a plan, and usually has a backup plan to go with that plan. He prepares for the worst- for example he'll expect people to go back on deals or for someone in another government to leak information. He is quick to put information together to form likely pictures of the whole, he's very good at figuring out what games and roles others are playing. It makes him well-suited to his line of work, even without his abilities as a Contractor.

He is, as one might expect, capable of being extremely ruthless. If someone gets in the way of the mission, he'll kill them. If someone is likely to get in the way of the mission further down the line, he'll kill them. He displays no qualms about this, or about other things such as tying a person up and stuffing them in a suitcase. It's part of getting the job done.

But in many ways he manages to come off as kind. He's quite polite, though he also has a tendency to assume a bit more familiarity than is appropriate. He'll be as helpful to others as the mission allows, and he'll avoid situations in which bystanders could be harmed whenever he can. (In fact, he even shows an instinct to protect coworkers and allies, shielding them from harm on multiple occasions.) In spite of his ability to treat people as objects, it's clear from early on that there may also be lines he'll refuse to cross- and that turns out to be the case. It's a rational thing, he would claim, (after all allowing collateral damage simply makes things more difficult) but the truth is that in a reasoned way he can be altruistic, acting rationally not only in self-interest but for the general interest. He usually gets along well with people, when he's not needling them, and isn't suspected of being a Contractor until he uses his powers. This is all rational to him as well, but it's done with a charming attitude and a nice little smile that can make others well-inclined.

...Of course, he'll also have that smile while killing people. So "kind" really isn't the best word for it.

In addition to slowly developing some deeper emotions, he has maintained a number of personality quirks. He hates smoking, and will tell you why in great detail. He also gets a little annoyed at people who take delight in their vices or who can enjoy their payment (goddammit April do you have to enjoy that beer so much while he's choking on this cigarette). Probably out of an interest in other peoples' reactions, he frequently makes deadpan black humor comments, which are as unappreciated as they are tasteless. He tries telling regular jokes as well, even though he can't pull them off. His voice mail message? Tells you to tell him a joke. He definitely has a tendency to troll people. Does that ringtone reflect a love of salsa music or a desire to see how people react to suddenly having something that loud playing? Maybe it's both. He dresses for the role of top spy, in impeccable suits frequently accompanied by sunglasses. Some of this, of course, might be deliberately enacted quirkiness, but if they're lies they're lies he's completely at home with.

Contractors are sometimes accused of being nothing more than weapons. November 11 may be one, but it's on his own terms.

Background:
His real name is unknown. It could actually be Jack Simon, but that seems unlikely. Anything about his life before ten years ago is unknown, with the exception of the fact that he is British. What is known is that ten years ago when the Gates appeared, he became a Contractor, with the ability to freeze any liquid he comes in contact with. He was either already working for or was subsequently recruited by the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), and given the code name November 11. He has certainly been working for MI6 for over five years, as he was in the Service before the Heaven's Gate incident, during the time that the woman codenamed February was working with them.

He has worked with fellow Contractor April, who can create rain, and the Doll July for a long enough time that they have become a fairly close team. He travels frequently on missions and assumes many covers, sometimes as a private citizen, sometimes under diplomatic cover. He is known as MI6's top agent. From what we see in canon, it can be presumed that most of his work deals with Contractors who serve foreign powers. Their work tends to be active and short-term.

After a series of unexpected events in the case of the Forfeiter (a Contractor who has lost their powers) Havoc prevented the successful handover of her to the international agency PANDORA, November 11 and his team were assigned to Tokyo to investigate the mysterious "Syndicate" that had messed things up. In the process, they also began to uncover information about the terrorist group Evening Primrose, which was led by February (now preferring the codename she had gotten from the Syndicate, Amber). After some attempts on the lives of the team, it is implied that November began to figure out that many of the members of the Syndicate were actually government officials (hence why he goes missing, unable to be contacted by the S.I.S.). He went to Evening Primrose for more information, and learned of the Syndicate's plot to erase all Contractors from existence. Following that, he confronted his superior at the S.I.S, Decade, managing to kill Decade and his bodyguards but getting seriously shot for his trouble.

Abilities:
As a Contractor, November 11's particular ability is to freeze any liquid he is in contact with (direct or indirect). If you're standing in water, he'll freeze you to the spot. If you're not standing in it, he might form a short spear out of ice and stab you with that. Of course, he's also completely willing to go with freezing all the blood in your body. That's an option too.

There's a catch though- a Contractor always has to make a payment in exchange for using their powers. November's is that he has to smoke. He's not happy about that.

He has skills beyond superpowers, though. He's a top spy for a reason- November is very good at gathering information and piecing it together. He won't discount any information if it's credible, which is probably a major factor in how he put together so much about the Syndicate (he wouldn't exactly have a horrified reaction and refuse the possibility that his boss could be betraying him, after all). He learns fast, prepares, and doesn't make the same mistake twice (sorry Chinese electric Batman, this Brit bought some rubber boots to counter you after that first fight).

First Person:
["Jack" has his usual affable (empty) smile as he turns the watch on. It's a bit dark in his apartment, apparently, but he's well-lit enough. A telescope rests on the window ledge behind him.]

I had thought that seeing the stars again after ten years would be exciting, but the novelty wore off quickly. Perhaps it would be different if I had ever bothered to memorize constellations.

[His smile broadens, as if he thought of something funny, though his voice remains relaxed.] The real stars do stay in place much better than fake ones we had.

[He shifts in his seat, so that he can see the window and the watch at once.] Does anyone know if these are the same stars from Earth, or are they unique? That would say something interesting about where we really are. I'm curious.

Thank you for indulging me. [He reaches over to the watch with a neat gesture, and the feed ends.]

Third Person:
November 11 considered the bottles lined up behind the bar. Uniformly cheap- not a surprise in a dive like this.

Well, that would make it less of a waste if he had to use it, which April at least should appreciate. He smiled slightly.

There was movement, evident in the sound of creaking hinges and shuffling feet. Someone had come into the bar, finally shifting the attention of a few of the patrons away from the new man in the white suit. November examined the newcomer's reflection in the mirror that hung above the bottles with no regard for safety. Mid-forties, dark hair going grey, tall but portly, a nervous disposition. Yes, that would be his contact.

The man sat down on the stool next to November. "Are you George Williams?" He spoke out of the side of his mouth, looking everywhere but at November. Painfully obvious, and certain to stick in the memory of some of the bar patrons. That would have to go in the report later.

"I am," November said easily, leaning back and smiling at the man as he waved for the bartender. "Care for a drink? It's on me."

"Oh, yes, thank you. Uh- whiskey." November watched as the man accepted the glass from the bartender with relief, taking a large gulp.

The man wasn't used to this line of work. November had been warned about that. But this level of discomposure was concerning. Surely any organization would have emphasized the importance of taking more care, would have given him a little basic training. Of course, the man could be under stress from another source as well.

November's eyes flicked briefly down to the glass in his own hand, still full. He was prepared.

CHARACTER
Name: The Major
Canon: Hellsing
Age: Early 30's in appearance, but he's physically stunted.
Timeline: After being killed by Sir Hellsing.

Personality: The Major loves war. He loves strife and conflict and finds true fulfillment within the battlefield. As countless lives are ended in an instant or traitors are one by one sought after and purged, hung up on the streets for everyone to gawk at, he smiles as he relishes in the utter depravity of the moment. He cares little for which side is victorious, nor does he subscribe to any belief system. The Major's alliance to Germany is more or less just lip service. He may carry the banner of his country somewhere on his clothing, but it really means little to him beyond signifying his role as soldier, one who fights in wars. His interests couldn't be more distant from things like politics, ideology, or the future. They're just decorations that people insist on hiding behind as they give into their primal selves. What makes a soldier a soldier, however, is the inclination to obey and the Major is willing to honor and respect the wishes of whoever he follows. Working under limitations gives him more of a challenge, which he welcomes wholeheartedly.

As a person, the Major is calm and refers to people politely and courteously. Even when the other party is yelling at him, he would feel no reason to stoop to their level. War-obsessed as he is, there's no reason to be rude, right? He is well-read and cultured given how many plays, books, and operas he makes references of. During his fifty years in hiding, it has been hinted that the Major has taken up a hobby in anime, given him singing out the theme song of Fist of the North Star. He follows anything that interests him from high culture to pop culture, demonstrating more of his artistic side. The frightening thing about the Major is that without mentioning his obsession with war, he could pass off as an interesting person in ordinary society, if just somewhat eccentric. Alas, this jolly, pleasant side of him only comes off as condescending in moments of high tension.

The Major respects his men. All he asks for is loyalty. If his men can provide him with it, then he will happily lead them on till the distant end of their struggles. He promises of a reawakening in Valhalla, the paradise for warriors where battles are eternal. While indeed, the man is leading everyone to their deaths, making his men “kindling for his personal bonfire”, this is exactly what he promised he would do. Just the same, he respects his greatest enemies just the same as his allies. He delighted in seeing both Integra and Seras reach their true potentials, never once underestimating them. Even Alucard, who he hates for being a monster, is still someone who doesn't fail to amuse and impress him. Enemy or friend, regardless of alliances, he sees the battlefield as a place where everybody comes together, united under a twisted equality. During a monologue, the Major fondly referred to the soldiers of all sides fighting as his “brethren”.

For all his actions, he truly believes in his own humanity. The only thing that proves one is a human is the soul, regardless of what physical form he takes on. To be a genuine human is to accept the base desires in one's self and work to fulfill it at all costs no matter the sacrifice, including the lives of others and the self. In other words, he hates monsters, vampires in particular, for being entities that live off others' lives, sharing their own in the process. Everything that he has belongs to him and to nobody else. The thought of sharing his existence with another fills him with such contempt that it's almost a testament to how greedy the man is. He doesn't mind killing and being killed, but to share his life with another fills him with genuine hatred. The Major is defined by bloodlust and greed, no better than an axe-swinging barbarian, only with a penchant for vocabulary. He has no capability to regret or to empathize with anybody like at least Alucard can, making him an even greater monster for all his talks of humanity.

Background: http://hellsing.wikia.com/wiki/The_Major

Abilities: The Major has a fully mechanical body that, provided it's still functioning, grants him immortality. His body is made more durable and he can only be killed with a shot at the head. Beyond that, his mechanical body doesn't give him any particular advantages. His aim with a gun is notoriously terrible, having only shot only one target in life. A competent fighter would never lose to him in a fair fight, which is why he stays out of battle himself and plays strategist.

First Person: http://rubycity-ooc.dreamwidth.org/270111.html?thread=6946591#cmt6946591

Third Person: It had been a good war. Everybody acted out their proper roles and their performances exceeded his greatest expectations. Sitting by the window seat, the Major looks out into the distance, but pays little attention to the sight in front of him. His mind replays the events of fifty years past again and yet again like how a satisfied husband would watch videos of his wedding and kids. The “why's” and “how's” of being in this train were irrelevant; he knew in his heart he was on his way to the warriors' paradise, Valhalla. And in an instant, perhaps a dozen seconds after regaining awareness of the world around him, the Major now stood, feet firmly planted on the train terminal.

“Oh.” He folds his hands behind his back and takes the first steps of his stay in the city and out the terminal. The Major takes a brisk walk over to where he may get the best view of this twilit city. Taking a quick look, that would clearly be the nearest Watch Tower. He can see it in the air, stretching above the structures around it. Be it cosmic irony, he notices on his way there that most buildings have a distinctly Victorian quality to them. A thought crosses his mind.

“I have burned you down before in the birth place of your aesthetics. Is this some indirect request for an encore? How montonous!”

He no longer has the patience to stroll around to confirm whether he was in just another Britain. The Major makes a run now for the Watch Tower. There, he could see the city for what it was, from above.

Despite his mechanical form, his mind still registered pain, tension, and stress. Cyborg though he was, he was an out of shape cyborg and going up the winding steps of the watch tower pushed his body to its limits. His smile held as he looked up at the orange light shining from the opening above. He stretches out his arm as if wanting to grab it for himself. He steps into the glow at the top of the tower, his destination, and stumbles his way over to the railing, grabbing hold of it, breathing for air. He looks up and the sights flooded into his eyes, not of just the city, but of the nature beyond. The nature beyond is irrelevant and he focused his sights back onto the city with his eyes drawn to the ruins of a once proud stone wall.

His smile stretches wide as he takes it in and the presence of the other watch towers. “Whatever is it that you tried protecting yourselves from?” he mutters, voice filled with glee, “Yourselves, perhaps?” Wherever he turns his head, he sees the footsteps and debris that “war” has left. This is no peaceful town. This is a place that mimics the visage of peace, but it is a fickle mask that would slip off sooner or later. This was no second act to the burning of London. Standing upright, having mustered enough energy, the Major stretches an arm up into the air, as if he was holding in his hand a glass filled with champagne.

“Make it a good one.”

CHARACTER
Name: Setsuna F. Seiei
Canon: Gundam 00
Age: 23
Timeline: Post-series/pre-movie
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: n/a

Personality: He has none.

Okay, that's not true. But to really discuss Setsuna's personality, we have to go back to the beginning.

When Setsuna was eight years old, a religious leader gathered up him and all of the young boys in his village, and told them all about a magnificent God who would save their village. Like all of the other boys, Setsuna listened and decided to follow this man and his God in order to help his village. But, in order to give himself over to God, he had to remove any other authority, specifically, his parents. So, to help with that, that religious gave Setsuna (and every other kid) a handgun, and had them sacrifice their parents to God. He then turned all of the kids into his own terrorist group known as the KPSA. The group waged a campaign of terror for nearly two years, until their neighboring nation of Azadistan finally defeated them. During the final battle, the KPSA had been wiped out except for Setsuna, and he was going to die until, at the last second, he was saved. by a Gundam.

Its those events that lay the foundation for who he is and who he becomes throughout the course of the series. The trauma of being a child terrorist has left Setsuna, at least on the surface, very cold, quiet, and withdrawn. He never says much, rarely smiles, and never jokes with anyone. He doesn't react much to provocation, and can be seen as cold or anti-social by others. He's always very serious, focused, and determined. He rarely shows any emotion, and if he does, he's usually brooding, pensive, bored, tired, or deep in thought. The only exception is anger, as he'll show rage on the battlefield, and only then. Other times, even when he's upset, its more of a subtle cold look than him actually acting out. But underneath that cold exterior, Setsuna is actually a very deep, thoughtful, and caring young man; its just hard to see because most of his personality is never on display. But despite not having much of a outgoing personality, he does have a presence about him, one that allowed him to become the de facto leader of Celestial Being.

For him, it all starts in his belief in Celestial Being's mission, and beyond that, his belief in Gundam. To Setsuna, Gundam isn't just a machine, it’s the physical embodiment of an idea: "The eradication of war through force," something he witnessed personally during the last stand of the KPSA. Since then, he's strived to be like that, to be strong enough to wipe out war off the face of the earth and leave a peaceful world behind. To him, that's what it means to be a Gundam, and he truly believes in that ideal with all of his heart. It may have started out as a child-like fascination and wonderment; replacing the God that abandoned him with the Gundam that saved him, but over time, its proven that he genuinely believes in that ideal. He also realizes that, to do that, to eradicate war with force, it requires a certain amount of violence, but he's made his own peace with that and accepts that fully.

With his quiet nature, he never gives any major speeches during the series, so it might seem odd that anyone would choose to look to him for direction or inspiration. He tends to communicate more through subtle changes in expression and body language, despite the fact those sorts of things tend to go unnoticed by most people. When he does talk, he says very little, but he tends to pick his words carefully so that they have maximum impact when said. Additionally, his actions say far more than words ever could. At the start of the second season, when Setsuna is reunited with a fractured Celestial Being, he quickly takes the initiative to pull the team back together. He recruits Lyle Dylandy to become a Gundam pilot; he retrieves the team's tactical forecaster, Miss Sumeragi; he's insistent that the group go rescue their captured teammate, Allelujah, and he's even personally the one who breaks him out of jail.

Its shortly after that, that Setsuna starts to find himself more in a position of leadership within the group. With the team having been fractured, his unwavering dedication provides a beacon for them, a way to find themselves and get their mission back on track. He's never given a formal position; he doesn't have a rank or title that puts him above anyone else, nor is he voted to any sort of position of power. He never hands out a ton of orders during battles (that's reserved for the team's tactical forecaster), but he does lay out his major goals in a very succinct and matter of fact way ("We'll break right through their ranks and recover Veda." "We'll defeat the Innovators." "Allelujah is our comrade, and we're going to save him.") and with such confidence that people around him tend to follow his lead. He provides the group with an overall direction, so that together they can accomplish their goals.

Despite his quiet, distant, and serious nature, he is a rather caring individual. He just shows it in very unusual ways. When he discovers that his teammate and mentor, Lockon, lost his family because of the actions of a terrorist group that Setsuna was a part of, he doesn't resist when Lockon points a gun at his head, and never says anything in defense of himself until after Lockon makes the decision not to kill him. In another instance, after killing Lyle's girlfriend (he had to, she was mind-controlled and going to kill Lyle), he allows Lyle to punch the crap out of him; its his way of allowing the other man to work through the grief, pain, and anger that he caused him. He even let Saji Crossroads deck him once, after Saji was upset by an encounter he had on the battlefield.

That said, he isn't a punching bag, and when others have tried to even so much as touch him without permission, he's reacted quiet angrily, and even violently in some cases (he punched Nena Trinity in the throat after she kissed him unexpectedly). It’s a thin line, but there are certain privileges that he allows friends and comrades that he wouldn't allow to strangers.

There are also other quiet ways in which he shows he cares. After Allelujah is rescued, and returns with a former enemy that is his long lost love, Setsuna doesn't question her presence. He also diverts from a mission so that Saji can try to reunite with his ex-girlfriend. Late in the series, when he sees Tieria's body and assumes that his comrade is dead, he quietly makes a promise to avenge him (he finds out immediately after that Tieria is very much alive).

His only major sore point, aside from strangers touching him, is religion. He firmly believes that there is no God, and that his parents died for nothing more than the amusement of a madman. That said, if others do believe in God, he's fine with that, so long as they aren't killing people in His name. For example, he tells the pacifist Marina to fight for the God that she believes in.

He does start to come out of his shell a little towards the end of the series, but only a little. He's still as serious as he's always been, but is also someone who wants a peaceful future, and is willing to fight for it.

Re: [Canon] Setsuna F. Seiei | Gundam 00 | Unreserved

[personal profile] jesus_is_gundam 2013-11-17 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
Background: Here

Abilities: Setsuna is an Innovator, the next evolution of humanity. He has the ability to process information with his quantum brain (though he has limits), communicate telepathically with his quantum brainwaves, sense the emotions of others nearby, anticipate the moves of his opponents, sense danger, has heightened spatial awareness, enhanced reflexes, increased strength, and has a life-span that extends over twice as long as normal humans.

As for his learned abilities, Setsuna is well trained in the art of guerilla warfare, can handle a wide range of weapons, explosives, is trained to be an elite close quarters combatant and is excellent with a set of blades.

Oh, and he's also a kick ass Gundam pilot.

First Person:

[When the video starts, Setsuna is staring at the screen. His expression was serious, and he was staring at the device as if he expected it to shrink back in shame from his gaze. Or maybe he expected whoever was on the other end of this feed to shrink back in shame instead.]

Tieria Erde.

[So, expect the other person to shrink back in shame, even if he knew that wasn’t going to happen. On their best days, they barely got along, even if they worked well together as a team. At their worst, there were death threats, dark glares, and possibly even the occasional attempted murder between them. Thankfully, things haven’t been that bad between them as of late, but apparently that peace is being tested at the moment.]

Where did you put it?

[he doesn’t elaborate any more than that, mostly because he doesn’t feel like he needs to. Tieria will know exactly what he’s talking about, and that’s the more important part of things. For now, he simply waits for an answer.]

Third Person:

The Cathedral was someplace Setsuna normally avoided. He had a lot of issues with religion, to the point where, as far as he was concerned, there was no God for anyone to worship. But when he walked into the Cathedral, it wasn’t to convince anyone that they were fools, all looking in the wrong place for answers. Nor was to worship with anyone, or seek any kind of spiritual guidance. He really only entered the place for one reason:

To get out of the rain.

It was pouring outside, and Setsuna, a child of the desert, wasn’t used to that kind of weather. Without an umbrella, he sought shelter to wait out the rain until it decided to pass. Since all he was going to do here was simply wait, he hung his jacket near the entrance for it to dry off a little, then sought out a seat away from most everyone else. They can worship in peace, so long as they left him in peace. But if anyone wanted to talk to him, particularly about God, they might get more than they bargained for.
