EVENT: Trousers of Time
On Friday, June 23, Ruby City is going to be party to yet another weird happening. This one, though, is a little more expansive than previous events have been. Your lucky characters are going to have access to other worlds! At least for a little while.
ICly, the Trousers of Time event will start not with a bang but with a whimper--or rather a strange coincidence. Sometime the morning of the 23rd, your character will open a door to somewhere totally normal, like the bathroom, and find themselves staring into a portal. Unfortunately, they've already put one foot forward, so . . . guess they're falling through!
They'll find themselves in one of the worlds that once was the home of a character in Ruby City. For example, someone in the Tolkien cast might end up in Night Vale! Yikes. These portals, or Tears, will only remain open for a short amount of time, the duration of which can be anything from minutes to hours at player discretion. Your character will be yanked back to Ruby City when the Tear closes, so there's no danger of being left behind.
They can, however, bounce back to Ruby City with items from the worlds they've visited! Up to three new items, in fact, and that includes weapons--anything that's not gamebreaking. You're welcome to include items your characters would have deliberately picked up while in other worlds, as well as items they wouldn't have chosen but you OOCly want them to have.
Speaking of OOC, here's how this event works on a player level! Obviously every player won't be familiar with every canon in the game. As such, please fill out the form below to give your fellow players a brief description of your character's world as well as some ideas on how to play around in them. We strongly encourage plotting on this post! If you have canonmates and they get to the world description first, feel free to add your thoughts.
Don't be shy of asking your fellow players further questions. In addition, don't feel you have to get other people's canons perfect--just have fun with the information you have and have fun worldhopping!
Fill me out!

World Name: Earth - United States - Alaska
Canon description in ten words or less: Outskirts of Alaska in the middle of nowhere.
Technology level: USA 2006, though it is Alaska, so cell and internet service are pretty slim. Many of the houses are powered solely by generator.
Wildlife: Typical Alaskan wildlife. Bears, moose, various birds and small woodland creatures.
Sentient species: Humans and the occasional Daimon.
What might daily life be like for those in this world? People engage in a lot of outdoor sports, but life is pretty solitary since there's such a small population and it's really out in the middle of nowhere. Other than that, a basic present day life for the most part.
What might a character entering this world encounter first? A blizzard. Other than that it depends if you end up in the small town or out by Zarek's home, which is in the woods a good 30 miles from town.
What might a character encounter while exploring? The town has a very small population, but there are some shops there. Otherwise it's basically woodlands. There are a few houses or hunting shacks out in the woods though.
What dangers might a character encounter? Bears are a real threat. There are also quite a few hunters, though they're typical humans.
Other important details: This is a pretty desolate areas where your only options of travel are likely to be walking (if the snow isn't too deep) or by snow machine.
Canon Name: Dark Hunter
World Name: Olympus
Canon description in ten words or less: Literally the Greek Mount Olympus, home of the gods.
Technology level: Most of the "technology" is more "magic." You won't find any televisions or computers or things like that there.
Wildlife: Stags, Artemis' golden cows, perhaps a few other animals.
Sentient species: The Greek gods all live here. You might also find a few demi-gods, dream hunters, nymphs, and oracles.
What might daily life be like for those in this world? There are quite a few huge parties meant to cater to some god's massive ego. Many of the gods simply hang out in their palaces with their servants, however.
What might a character entering this world encounter first? A huge variety of palaces/temples spread across rolling hills. Running across some deity or another is likely.
What might a character encounter while exploring? Any of the greek gods are likely to be there, and if they aren't their temples still will be. Parties are common. Occasionally one might find a group looking through sfora (magic orbs basically) to see into the human realm.
What dangers might a character encounter? Running into one of the gods might not be the best idea. Given a character isn't likely to be recognized, they'd be viewed as an intruder by most. This could easily lead to torture, enslavement, or being brought before Zeus... which would be bad.
Other important details: In Dark Hunter, not many of the main Greek gods are nice. They're pretty much arrogant asses who act like petty children and have very quick tempers with little restraint.

World Name: Earth - Ancient Greece
Canon description in ten words or less: Greece back in 100 BC or so.
Technology level: Basic technologies of ancient civilizations. Chariots, steel weaponry, dirt roads, wells.
Wildlife: Deer, foxes, wolves, goats, birds, small animals, and the occasional large cat.
Sentient species: Humans, with some gods and similar entities mixed in that nobody would realize aren't human.
What might daily life be like for those in this world? The Greeks are currently at war with Rome, so given the location life could either be brutal in an attacked city or peaceful. Some citizens can go about their daily lives without trouble. Others live in constant fear.
What might a character entering this world encounter first? Depends on where they arrive. Soldiers would be a common occurrence. Arriving in a town would bring a lot of people (who smell) and vendor stands.
What might a character encounter while exploring? Cities will have quite a few shopping opportunities. There is evidence of slavery and depending on the location devastation from battle. Horses are very common.
What dangers might a character encounter? War. Both Roman and Greek soldiers could be a threat to an incoming character.
Other important details: Most likely whatever clothing a character is wearing is going to draw some really weird looks in Ancient Greece.
Canon Name: Chronicles of Nick / Dark Hunter
World Name: Earth - United States - New Orleans, Louisiana
Canon description in ten words or less: The big easy baby, only with lots of supernatural stuff.
Technology level: Typical US technology of 2006.
Wildlife: Gators, birds, turtles, small mammals.
Sentient species: Humans, apollites, daimons, gods/demi-gods, were hunters, a variety of demon species.
What might daily life be like for those in this world? The average human won't realize there is anything supernatural going on. People go about their daily business and enjoy the party scene the is New Orleans.
What might a character entering this world encounter first? Large groups of people partying it up and loving life.
What might a character encounter while exploring? Sanctuary Bar is run by all were hunters, though most humans wouldn't know it. There are also some interesting shops like psychics, erotic sex shops, clubs (including one run by Charonte), and coffee shops selling amazing powdered sugar beignets.
What dangers might a character encounter? Daimons lurk in with the typical humans, and most can't tell them apart. Run into one, and they'll eat your soul. The wrong type of demon is also known to kill or eat humans. Venturing out into the swamp areas will bring the more normal threat of gators.
Other important details: Were hunters are capable of taking both human and animal shape. Without some supernatural senses, you probably can't tell. Most are at least relatively friendly. Running into a Charonte demon will result in you being chased by it while he tries to cover you in barbecue sauce and eat you.

World Name: Earth - United States - New York City
Canon description in ten words or less: post-revolutionary America and all the political fun that comes with it!
Technology level: late 18th-early 19th century tech!
Wildlife: Depends on where you go. Farm animals, horses, deer, rabbits, general forest type wildlife probably.
Sentient species: Plain ol' regular humans.
What might daily life be like for those in this world? Depends on where you live and what you do. In Alexander's case it would likely be work, home life with his kids and wife, and writing forever and always. General daily life in post-revolution America.
What might a character entering this world encounter first? Probably American founders yelling at each other, lol. Or writing nasty letters to the paper.
What might a character encounter while exploring? Anything and everything one can find in a young NYC.
What dangers might a character encounter? Protip: don't piss off anyone too badly or you might end up in a duel. They're not fun. Otherwise -- thieves, political assholes, y'know. If it's just after the war ended there might be a few British soldiers about.
Other important details: If you have weird clothes, tell people you're from France. They'll probably believe it.
Canon Name: Hamilton: an American musical
World Name: Earth - US Virgin Islands/West Indies - Christiansted, St. Croix
Canon description in ten words or less: Colonial-era island known for its trading!
Technology level: 1750s-60s technology.
Wildlife: ....Creatures one might find in the Caribbean. Not sure, wiki wasn't clear, but likely there are those and general farm animals.
Sentient species: Normal ol' humans, once again.
What might daily life be like for those in this world? The general daily grind. It definitely depends on your social status, but in Hamilton's case it would likely be studying and/or working. General content warning for slavery and 1700s values which are not the greatest.
What might a character entering this world encounter first? Depends on where you end up. The town is likely big, it's a port town on a reasonably prosperous island. The worse part of town probably contains your general ladies of the evening, taverns, and whatnot.
What might a character encounter while exploring? Cool Caribbean birds! Possibly depressing or terrible things! Maybe even a hurricane! Anything and everything one might find on a mid-1700s trading port.
What dangers might a character encounter? Hurricanes. Rude people. Thieves. Jerks trying to intimidate a bastard orphan kid. :C
Other important details: Christiansted was, unfortunately, involved in the slave trade. I will be avoiding it more than likely, as Alexander doesn't stand for that sort of thing and didn't when he was a kid, either, but it is a thing that exists.

World Name: Arda- continent of Aman- city of Tirion upon Tuna
Canon description in ten words or less: Paradise on earth, illuminated by magic Trees
Technology level: High fantasy medieval as interpreted by aesthetics-conscious mad scientists, with elements of steampunk.
Wildlife: Aman is implied to have just about every animal in existence, though in Tirion itself you'd probably see animals most often found in cities.
Sentient species: Elves, possibly some visiting Ainur (divine spirits)
What might daily life be like for those in this world? Tirion is beautiful, wildly prosperous, and possibly the most intellectually innovative place on the planet. There's a wide range of physical, artistic, and intellectual pursuits to enjoy, and most people have the security and leisure to pursue their own interests.
What might a character entering this world encounter first? Spectacular architecture, art, and artists' workshops. There would also be a lot of musicians, although with a few prominent exceptions the Noldor musicians aren't considered as skilled as those of other elven kindreds.
What might a character encounter while exploring? The political scene in Tirion is always a bit heated, due to the ongoing soap opera that is the royal family. Listen in, and you might recognize some of the names they're arguing about.
What dangers might a character encounter? None, Aman's a pretty safe place. Unless you were to leave Tirion and Valinor altogether and go south looking for giant demonic spiders, but why would you want to do that?
Other important details: At this point in time, the Sun and Moon have not been created yet. The continent of Aman is lit by two giant trees, one golden (Laurelin) and one silver(Telperion)By day the sky is golden, by night it's silver, and at dawn and dusk the lights mingle together.
An artist's representation of the city can be found here.
Canon Name: Tolkien's Legendarium
World Name: Arda- The Helcaraxe (The Grinding Ice)
Canon description in ten words or less: The Bering Land bridge with extra Siberia
Technology level: Primitive and improvisational
Wildlife: Mostly artic animals: seals and walruses, polar bears, arctic foxes, reindeer, etc.
Sentient species: Elves. Mostly freezing, and in a very bad mood.
What might daily life be like for those in this world? An endless daily struggle for your own and others' survival.
What might a character entering this world encounter first? A large band of elves (40,000-60,000) traveling east across it.
What might a character encounter while exploring? Arctic tundra, snow, pain, and misery
What dangers might a character encounter? Starvation, freezing to death, and falling through cracked ice and drowning would be among the obvious ones.
Other important details: Once again, the Sun and Moon do not exist. The Helcaraxe is lit only by stars, campfires, and the collective bad mood of the Noldor attempting to cross it.
Also: this place is terrible, don't go there.

World Name: Arda - specifically, the continent of Middle-earth - Rivendell
Canon description in ten words or less: hidden valley with waterfalls. you know like in the movies
Technology level: relatively primitive by our standards, but with hidden comforts
because Elrond identifies Noldor and the Noldor like to Build Things(tm)so you are likely to have fires in the hearth which need wood, not coal or gas, but hot running water in the likely communal baths, for example.Wildlife: pretty much anything you could expect to find in a European country, with the addition of Wargs, Orcs, Trolls, Wraiths and other associated fantasy creatures. In Rivendell proper, farm animals, working dogs & cats, horses which are just a little more intelligent than you are used to, foxes, hawks... creatures you'd expect in a woodland setting.
Sentient species: Elves, Humans, Dwarves, Hobbits, Orcs, various Ainur (minor spirits of creation) masquerading as Wizards or Balrogs or named Sauron. In Rivendell proper, Elves, mostly! But it being the halfway house that it is, expect Dwarves and Men, and even one or five hobbits.
What might daily life be like for those in this world? In general, tough but the inhabitants are used to that. Mostly pre-industrial so most work is done by hand. In Rivendell proper you're looking at relative comfort but plenty of physical labor. No slavery, but you do have servants, mostly younger elves who are basically doing chores for their elders, and hopefully picking up a few skills as they go, as well as a few older elves who have attached themselves to this or that lord and refused to leave.
What might a character entering this world encounter first? in Tolkien's own words... "They saw a valley far below. They could hear the voice of hurrying water in a rocky bed at the bottom; the scent of tees was in the air; and there was a light on the valley-side across the water.... The air grew warmer as they got lower... The trees chanced to beech and oak... and so at last to the very brink of the river. It was flowing fast and nosily....There was only a narrow bridge of stone without a parapet, as narrow as a pony could well walk on;...and so they all came at last to the Last Homely House and found it's doors flung wide."
What might a character encounter while exploring? Elves! waterfalls, forges, the Kitchens, the Stables, the Library, Healing Rooms, gardens both wild and carefully tended. And the Hall of Fire, where a fire is always lit and you can often find music and song. Armor and weapons that is ridic old but still seems new. Training fields and beyond them meadows and fields and rows of well tended fruit trees.
What dangers might a character encounter? IN Rivendell, only those you bring yourself - like falling over the edge of a waterfall! Careful, there are caves in the mountains and wild animals, and the Bruinen is snow-melt and both fast and cold. OUTSIDE of Rivendell... anything, really. But mostly Orcs, Wargs, and Trolls, as well as Bandits. But why would you want to leave?
Other important details: Kindly don't break any of the antiques, many are millenia old! Or do, but expect to be politely but firmly sent on your way shortly thereafter. Erestor is in residence, if you'd like to meet him again - he's Elrond's Chief Counsellor, but he's most likely in the Library. Glorfindel is probably riding or training, if he's around. Arwen is probably in the gardens, if she's home (she's often not) and Aragorn may be with her (he's just as often away) Elrond should be about as well, as this is his home. Maglor is NOT around. But if you listen very carefully, if the wind is right, there's a voice that drifts into the valley, at times, carried on the wind.
