[personal profile] cursedtolive 2012-08-11 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
What most people would see when they meet Czeslaw Meyer is a polite, quiet, not-extraordinarily impressionable young boy. With a small build that makes him seem frail at times, dark hair and dark eyes, he doesn't stand out in a crowd through physical appearance alone, and his personality does not make him that much more memorable, either. If in a group, he would rather sit and let the conversation carry itself and only occasionally speak up, but he smiles cheerily like any other child his age, and has a slightly cheeky tone of voice - like any other child his age. Additionally, while his quieter demeanor might make him come off as shy, that is not entirely true; quite the contrary, actually. Czeslaw is shown to be rather friendly and quick to make acquaintances. For example, in 1931, he befriended Mary Beriam, a fellow passenger aboard a train, in a matter of hours and began exploring the train with her. Months later in summer of 1932, he addresses Firo Prochainezo, his roommate a man he met that January, with a brotherly attitude. However, that is only the side of his personality Czeslaw chooses to show.

Although he approaches the people around him with politeness, friendliness, and age-appropriate childishness, it is obvious to those who are (supposedly) closest to him to realize that Czeslaw has carefully constructed a wall between himself and other people. Firo especially has felt this wall several times, such as in Man in the Killer (summer 1932), when Czes responds to his roommate's joking sarcasm with a nonchalant "you're right; I'm sorry." According to Firo's observations, Czes has only opened his heart up to a very few select people - and he's right, of course. Despite his friendly attitude, Czeslaw is probably one of the most (if not the most) paranoid and suspicious characters in the entire Baccano! series… and for good reasons, too.

An immortal who has been alive for over two centuries by 1932, Czeslaw had led a life filled to the brim with physical and emotional torment (gross details omitted), despair, fear, distrust, and solitude. Betrayals (and abuse in one case) at the hands of people he once trusted left deep, painful scars that no amount of time or immortality could heal completely. After watching more than half of his friends be 'devoured' by Szilard Quates on the night after they obtained immortality, Czeslaw lived with his guardian, Fermet, who spent the next many years repeatedly hurting and killing him under the pretext that he was "testing the limits of [their] immortality." Czes, who finally snapped after years and years of this daily torture, devoured Fermet in order to escape. But because "devouring" Fermet also meant gaining all of the man's thoughts and memories (and everything else), that left Czes with the knowledge that his guardian only hurt him for his own amusement and held absolutely no love for him. He also "inherited" Fermet's tremendous fear of eventually being devoured by Czeslaw himself. In other words, since this moment he's been living with his own memories of being tortured, as well as the inherited memories of gleefully torturing himself for years. Fun, no?

Knowing that the man he trusted his life with had betrayed him in the worst way possible and fearing that everybody he knows could be an enemy fed Czeslaw's paranoia. With Maiza, Isaac, and Miria as definite exceptions, he is incredibly suspicious of other immortals and is convinced that one of them would eventually try to devour him. He has a strong paranoid survivalist mentality and, before he met Isaac and Miria in 1931, would go to extremes to protect himself. Such extremes included bargaining with a gangster to have him massacre some passengers aboard a train so he could weed out the one that regenerates - and devour him before he regained consciousness. The only rule Czeslaw had to control his cold, manipulative survival method was that he would not betray children who trusted him, as that meant he would be doing to those children exactly what had been done to him. That rule is a result of his paranoia regarding Fermet: after devouring him and gaining everything that was his, Czeslaw lives in constant fear that one day he would start acting like him.

On the topic of fears, the reason why Czelsaw is so terrified of being devoured is not because he is afraid of death. In fact, again before he met Isaac and Miria, Czes saw his eternal life as nothing more than hellish and wished strongly to be released from it. Actually, what he fears more than anything is the fact that if he were to be killed off, the immortal that devours him would also consume his and (consequently) Fermet's memories, finding out the truth about what their relationship was like. To Czeslaw, there is nothing more humiliating or mortifying than someone finding out how perverted their relationship had been or how twisted he had become as its aftermath. The reason for this was because Czeslaw, beneath his cold, cynical, and tough exterior, sincerely wished that he could be happy again, the way he was back before he became immortal in 1711. However, because of Szilard's betrayal and his awareness of his own changed personality, Czeslaw only felt the despair that his wish would never come true, and part of his survivalist rampage was caused by his struggle to destroy the depair along with the hope. Even now, after coming to New York and gaining something that resembles a functioning family that truly cares for him, he is unable to completely let go of this fear and will react with caution or terror whenever he meets an immortal from 1711. While he no longer goes out of his way to try to kill them, he never lets anybody's right hand (the hand used to devour) anywhere close to his head, and, as mentioned earlier, he does not let his guard down. The unease is also directed, although with less intensity, at the other immortals that he finds himself surrounded by in New York, who include people such as his roommate/sibling-figures, Firo and Ennis.

Additionally, as Claire Stanfield points out in 1931, Czeslaw has a deep fear of things he does not know or understand. Specifically, while the pain Fermet inflicted upon him left him with a "it can't be worse than anything I haven't seen already" mentality, that simultaneously fuels his strong fear that there might be a level of pain he doesn't know of yet. Usually, Czeslaw has no problem with serious injuries or fatal blows. He didn't bat an eyelash when Ladd Russo fired a rifle at his face, and in 2001 he even throws himself into a fireplace in order to burn the ropes he was tied up with. In both cases, he refers back to similar experiences from when he lived with Fermet (fantastic, don't you think?) But because he knows how much those can hurt, he is very afraid that something can hurt worse, and he also has a related fear of anything that is related to Claire Stanfield, who was the one to show him that there was, indeed, pain worse than what Fermet gave him. The trauma will haunt him for a long time, as while he doesn't away from them screaming and crying as he did from Claire in the 1930s, he still does his best to avoid that man's descendants seventy years later.

CHARACTER
Character Name: The Signless
Canon: Homestuck
Timeline: The Signless is taken from a certain point during his travels with his companions, before being captured and executed, when he was hoping to change his world for the better.

If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: I also play Nepeta Leijon from Homestuck. Signless and Nepeta lived hundreds of years apart, as is assumed. They don’t know each other.
As far as their play in the game, if Signless saw Nepeta, she would remind him of the Disciple, his matesprit (as we are told in the story, girlfriend would be the better term for their relationship), and regard her fondly because of that. Other than that, he’d see Nepeta as another member of the (last) young generation of trolls that, unfortunately, had to live in a violent Alternia, forced to fight each other in pointless feuds and struggling to survive, before reaching adulthood and being sent to space to forcefully aid Her Imperious Condescention’s planet conquering. He’d feel especially protective of that group of trolls, as in checking up on them from time to time, but not giving Nepeta more attention than to any of the others.
Any other interactions would not have much importance and all of them would be offscreen.

Personality: Signless thrives on being a calm, understanding troll. Considering he brought upon himself the task of spreading the ideals of love for his people and equality among all trolls, one would be safe to assume that he lives by his words.

Upon meeting him, one would notice how he speaks in a calm, gentle, kind manner, leaving the other person at ease. He is quite non-threatening, in fact being welcoming to people of all kinds. He won’t refuse a pleasant idle chat, and will most definitely offer advice, especially if asked for such, trying to be as helpful as his knowledge allows him. He seeks to maintain a good, relaxed mood.

Those that come to him in need will notice his eagerness to help. Despite, of course, having his own problems to take care of, he’ll never ignore a request for help. One should not be ashamed to come to him in times of need, no matter how delicate the situation. He’ll maintain secrecy if he must, unless he truly believes that it should be broken in order to reach the best solution to the problem. If he cannot help, he will, in the very least, offer a shoulder to cry on, and a few soothing words.
One can assume that Signless’s calm and kind nature comes from the fact that he was raised by The Dolorosa, not just different from having been raised by a Lusii (essentially a wild monster/animal), but also the fact that it was a kind act by itself, since, without her help, he would have simply died as an infant.

Like it was mentioned in the earlier paragraph, Signless sometimes has his own issues to take care of. And as so happens to most of those who will gladly carry everyone else’s weight on their shoulders, he’ll keep his own problems to himself. At some point, if the situation truly calls for it, he might ask some particular people to lend him a friendly ear, but he does not enjoy the idea of burdening others with such things, and will avoid doing so.

He is particularly protective of those of his own kind, especially those who do suffer the weight of being in the lower castes of the Hemospectrum. And yet, he welcomes all, treating them in a manner that resembles the care of a family member. This would be shown in the way he promotes equality between all trolls, and his accepting attitude towards others.

Despite his goodwill, Signless does have his own anger triggers. He strives to stay calm, but he will not endure blatantly disrespect and rudeness, whether it is intended at him or others. If someone acts unmannerly towards him, he will refrain from having hasty reactions, and will choose to advise them to change their wording or action instead. It will take a lot to finally make him react, but, if he must, he will. Not being a supporter of violence, he will do everything in his power to not resort to it, no matter how bad the situation gets.
If he notices someone suffering through the acts of another, he will not hold back his tongue, and will quickly move to protect the victim, confronting those guilty of such acts. Again, much like mentioned before, he will always try to maintain calm, and only resort to more extreme measures when there is simply no other way to correct the situation.

Therefore, Signless is a welcoming, kind troll, who will befriend all of those who give him such privilege, but he does not hold ignorance towards unruly behaviors and/or acts of violence, quickly putting himself in harm’s way if it means protecting those who cannot help themselves.

Re: [ The Signless || Homestuck || Reserve || 2 of 3

[personal profile] youareforgiven 2012-08-11 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
History: The Signless’s story had great influence in the general shaping of his planet’s society, despite all the controversy stirred.
He was born into an Alternia ruled by blood color and violence, where those higher in the Hemospectrum would suppress those below them, and where, at the top, sat the Condesce , who watched and instigated this sort of behavior. Signless tried to change these ideals and insert the idea of peace and equality into their society, ultimately failing, having his voice stifled, his hope broken and his life taken, but never completely erasing his influence.

His story starts at the beginning, when Signless was born in the Brooding Caverns as any other troll (although, according to what is told to us in canon, Signless is actually a paradox clone of himself). However, Signless was born a mutant: a troll of bright, candy red blood (visible as the grubs’ bodies share the same color as their blood), something not fitting in the traditional Hemospectrum. Mutant trolls were something unheard of, as there were no lusii of the same blood color to raise them, nor was there even a symbol assigned to said color (which is the reason behind his title), leaving the youngling set to die.
In comes the troll known as The Dolorosa: as a jade blood, she was set to work in the brooding caverns to tend to the Mother Grub (a large, monstrous creature that gives birth to all trolls). Taking pity on the youngling, she took Signless and escaped the Caverns, raising him as her own, becoming the first “mother” of Alternia.
They lived in secret, as any knowledge of his existence and of her escape would definitely result in slavery or execution. In time, proof of his blood color would become evident, as happened to every troll (as trolls are first born with gray irises, which fill with their blood color as they grow older).

At some point of his life, Signless began having visions of a peaceful Alternia. These memories were, in fact, remains of his Pre-Scratch version, which actually lived in such positive environment. It was so alluring, so much different than the current state of their world, that Signless could not help but to wish such a change could happen. Motivated by such, Signless sought to spread ideals of love, acceptance and equality throughout Alternia, travelling and influencing minds throughout his years.

Dolorosa accompanied the young troll, becoming his first follower. During his travels, he gathered more followers, The Psiionic and The Disciple being of special mention.
Thanks to Signless’s influence, The Psiionic broke free from the life of slavery assigned to those of yellow blood such as him, seeking to help and and accompany his new friend on his travels instead.
The Disciple, however, became more than just a follower. She, like the other two, accompanied him, but also kept a record of all of his teachings and seemed to be the most attentive of all. The Signless was aware of such attention, and, eventually, they became romantically involved.
Their relationship is said to be a special one, another mark of the Signless’s untraditional lifestyle. While trolls keep their relationships according to the set concept of Quadrants, the relationship between Signless and Disciple is told to have “transcended” them, being safe to assume that it was closer to the human concept of love.

With these three by his side, Signles kept up his worldwide travels, speaking against violence and suppression, and for equality and love for trolls of all kinds. His ideals would reach the ears of those who suffered by the hands of the Highbloods, leading then into a revolt, but they would also reach to those of higher power.

Unfortunately, this did not end with good results. Having stirred so much attention, Signless and his group were captured, him being sentenced to torture and death, his piers being sent to slavery, with the exception of the Disciple, who was spared and lived the remainder of her life isolated, living in caves and mourning Signless’s passing, writing his teachings on the walls.

Just before his execution, Signless still shared one last word with the world. With his spirit finally broken, his love for the trolls of Alternia and his hope of change gave way into anger and hatred, which he expressed through his final sermon, the Vast Expletive.
As he passed away, he became known as The Sufferer, and finally gained a symbol, based on the shackles that held him during his final moments.

Trolls were forbidden of mentioning him and the revolt, even in personal records. However, his influence was never truly erased, as centuries after, his teachings would lead to another revolt against the Highbloods, led by The Summoner, which would end with Alternia being populated only by young trolls, having the adults been banished to space, as per orders of Her Imperious Condescension, serving her in the conquering of new planets.

Like so, the story of The Sufferer is known all throughout their planet, and is a vital part of the shaping of their society, but is mostly regarded as a myth.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strenghts
-Physical: As far as physical strengths, one can count the higher endurance, not only as a trait of his kin, but also to keep him protected as he travels great distances and escapes the dangers of being a mutant in an already violent society. He also has improved vision in the dark, as compared to a human, due to trolls’ nocturnal nature.
-Psychological: A developed capability to think and ponder about problems and finding solutions, gained thanks to his distaste of violence. He’s also a great user of spoken word, carefully choosing what to say and how to say it, managing to influence minds.
-Emotional: Patience is his biggest virtue, withstanding taunts and general unruly behavior with calm and poise. He is also calm and kind, easily gaining the favor of others.

Weaknesses
-Physical: Having been rescued from the Brooding Caverns, most of his physical battle abilities are taught by Dolorosa or self-taught; together with the fact that he avoids violence, his fighting skills are not as highly developed as most trolls.
-Psychological/Emotional: He’s incredibly protective of his values of equality and fairness, so he’s more easily angered when the situation is unfair and/or victimizes anyone, specially someone weaker than the other party. He also might become disgruntled if someone continuously steps on his ideals.
He also will easily carry everyone else’s problems on his shoulders, but will not as easily share his own, along as easily getting feelings of gloom when pondering about the limit of his own actions.

Abilities: As a troll, Signless possesses a number of abilities that assure his survival on a planet so struck with violence as Alternia. He possesses the necessary endurance to withstand battle conditions, even despite frowning upon fighting in itself. It is a needed trait, especially when we take to account that he spent almost his entire life travelling on what would sometimes be harsh and/or dangerous conditions.
Despite not having skipped a stage usually required by all trolls when young – namely the dangerous trials they must go through to make their way out of the Brooding Caverns – Signless had to learn to battle in order to survive conflict as well. This he had the privilege to learn from the Dolorosa as she raised him, couple with independent training. His weapon of choice is the sickle, which he keeps tucked away in his strife specibus, choosing to only handle it when it is truly necessary.

Besides the ones mentioned before, there are other traits common to his kin, such as improved night vision, subsequent from their nature as nocturnal creatures. Also countable are traits such as heightened hearing and sense of smell, slightly more animal-like traits achieved through necessary evolution.

Another noticeable ability is his developed eloquence. Most trolls seem to invest on direct battling, as is the influence of their society for hundreds and hundreds of years, but Signless, being a peacekeeper, invests greatly in the spoken word. He managed to influence and change the opinion of a great part of the troll population, giving way to a revolt of values. This is an ability in which Signless invests more than the physical ones.

Amaimon | Ao No Exorcist | No Reserve | 2 of 3

[personal profile] demonicdiabetes 2012-08-12 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Odd is not enough to describe the demon known as Amaimon, The Earth King. This strange individual certainly stands out in a crowd of people, both physically and psicologically. He has interacted with humans very little in his life, leaving his people skills nearing zero, which, coupled with his fixating stare and often relaxed pose leads to a recipe for disaster. He takes nearly everything in life in a relaxed, laid back way, be it eating insane amounts of food, or fighting the son of satan. He rarely diverts from this mindset, his tone of voice bland and uninterested and his face with a very small plethora of expressions, but this does not mean he is emotionless. Amaimon is largely driven by his emotions and food, albeit not making it explicitly obvious in the way he expresses himself. This regularly does not cause much trouble, but some times, when his worst impulses kick in, such as disobeying his brother's clear orders when it comes not not killing anyone, they can become a bit of an issue. He eventually did not, but if left to his own devices he would have done so in a blink of an eye. He detests to lose, and grows angry when he is denied a way to change that, showing a somewhat competitive nature. Another thing that annoys him is people making fun of his hairstyle. He was called "Broccoli" more than once in the series, and it certainly was a thing that he did not take lightly to. He easily finds ways to distract himself from any duties he has to do, as he is a bit of an air head. Defects aside, Amaimon is a very curious person, and if he gets his eye on something that interests him slightly, he will be excited to research more on it and educate himself further. He loves to "play", but his definition of the word is probably different than what we see it. In his eyes, a deadly sword fight with Rin is a wonderful game, and he even shakes his rear at him, taunting him with Rin's sword in his posession, showing how relaxed and easygoing he is with things. In a future fight, after taunting Rin enough to the point of making him draw his sword, he is shown as very amused, letting out a loud cackle and sounding very excited when he went in to attack him head on.

All in all, Amaimon is a person demon vastly led by his desires, but other than his more problematic impulses and his odd solutions to boredom, his fixating stare, his dull emotionless face and bland tone of voice, not to mention deadly demonic powers, as is his birthright as one of the sons of satan.

CHARACTER
Name: Roxanne Lalonde
Canon: Homestuck
Timeline: Post Death
Personality: If there's one thing that Ms. Lalonde is known for, it's her passive aggression. Or at least that's what her daughter would say; while Ms. Lalonde is quite capable of being a huge, passive aggressive bitch, a lot of her actions are sincere. Despite the fact that Mom and Rose were perpetually locked in a battle of passive aggressive one-upsmanship, it's pretty clear that Rose had always misinterpreted her actions and that Mom really always did love and care for her daughter and always wanted what was best for her. The reason for these misunderstandings with Rose is that Mom is not good at expressing her emotions. She tends to keep a lot of her thoughts and feelings to herself which inevitably leads to Rose thinking that her actions are insincere or passive aggressive.

Ms. Lalonde is also very intelligent and is an Astronomer, meaning she is an expert at celestial phenomena. She worked for Grandpa Harley and that's not a bragging right that many people actually have the privilege of having, and she was also involved in the creation of SBURB. Considering the fact that the game is so complicated, this shows that she is a very smart, especially considering she accomplished a lot of these things at a younger age than most women, as she's only in her late thirties, and was in her late twenties when she found Rose in the meteor crater when she was off studying the phenomena for Grandpa Harley.

Sarcasm is also a strong trait in many Lalondes, but most especially Ms. Lalonde. It's probably one of the reasons that her and Rose's relationship is so tense on occasion, because she hides her emotions behind a wall of sarcasm. But just because she can be a sarcastic bitch doesn't mean she doesn't have feelings; she's just incapable of expressing them in a way that isn't sarcastic, or in a way that doesn't come off as sarcastic. When she does act sincere, it's usually in a way that makes it seem like she's still being fake unless the situation is really dire... And by then it's usually too late.

Just the same as she can use words to hurt people, she's just as capable, if not more, of physically hurting people. She's skilled in hand-to-hand combat, able to take down a very large monster with ease, using only her hands. It can also be assumed and is very likely that she's just as skilled with a gun, as she's been shown carrying what appears to be a large rifle. Considering how smart she is and how skilled at martial arts she is, she has probably dedicated a lot of time into her marksmanship skills and is very handy with her gun.

Ms. Lalonde is also, to put it bluntly, an alcoholic. Her house is always well stocked with booze and she is hardly ever seen without a martini in hand. Despite the fact she's almost constantly drunk, however, it never affects her ability to do things- presumably because she's been drinking long enough to be a highly functional alcoholic. She doesn't really tend to slur her words unless she's been drinking heavier, nor does she ever really stumble or fall like most people who drink as much as she does. Overall, she holds her liquor very well.

First Person: If I were to say that I am not confused, it would be a lie. However, I have experienced enough to have a general idea of what happened, despite the fact I do not understand exactly how it happened. I am not dead anymore, that much is obvious. While the gesture is nice, the act of taking me from the game should have been beyond impossible, so I do not particularly appreciate being brought back to life. I have, however, gathered that no one here is aware of who or what brought them here, so I will avoid the obvious line of questioning. Instead, I will just introduce myself. My name is Roxanne Lalonde.

Next, I will inquire about two things. First and foremost; has anyone come across a girl by the name of Rose Lalonde? If so, please tell me more.

Second and only slightly less important, where is the nearest bar?

Third Person: She saw it coming, but despite that it still hurt. What she didn't see coming was the overwhelming guilt she felt as she drew her last breath. There was so much that she couldn't say to Rose that she wanted to and now she couldn't, and that hurt more than the physical wounds ever could.

Actually being dead wasn't so bad though. The dream bubbles were fairly nice, despite the fact that she couldn't actually get drunk there. She met a lot of... interesting people. And by interesting, they were pretty weird. It wasn't a completely miserable existence, and it meant that she could distract herself from the emotional pain. Or rather, dull it to the point that she could focus on other things and not Rose.

How long she was dead was unclear, but when she found herself waking up on a train of all things, she was quite confused. She knew immediately that she was no longer in the game, because this wasn't a part of it. She didn't panic though, because that solved nothing. Instead, she kept calm and tried to find out as much as possible. In the end, she really didn't find out much, nor did she manage to find the one thing she really wanted to find.

So she settled for the second thing she wanted to find the most, which was the bar. Despite the fact she didn't have money, she still managed to get a drink using her Lalonde charm. Or rather, she asked as nicely as possible and hoped for the best. Thankfully, it paid off. She let out a sigh as the familiar feeling of the alcohol hit her after a while. She'd missed that feeling. It dulled the ache more than anything had in a long time. It made her realize just how bad it really had been in the dream bubbles when she couldn't get drunk.

At least it meant that there was something good about this place, even if her Rose wasn't there. All she could do now was drink and hope that one day, preferably soon, she would show up too.

Personality:

Russia is, by landmass, the largest country in the world. As the human personification of the nation of Russia, Ivan Braginski is rather tall, hovering over just about every other nation on earth. He’s also somewhat husky, though he prefers the term ‘big boned’ and actually gets quite upset when someone calls him ‘fat.’

Russia is a very northern country, most of its landmass being a cold, icy landscape, and as a result, most of the country is very rocky and inhabitable. Ivan often complains about how cold his home is, and dreams about living somewhere else--somewhere far warmer, with nicer weather and less ice and snow. He often mentions wanting to move to the ‘Southern Islands’, by which he likely means Seychelles.

Being one of the older countries in the world, Russia has had its fair share of troubles in the past. Built up from the old days by Turks and Slavs, Mongols and Finns; Russia is a nation made from the contributions of many nations. Not of one solid people; but of many peoples. Being alone is something that Ivan is very used to, being that his country is such a powerful one with such a dark history; however; it is shown in the series often that he simply desires to have the company of others. Trying his best to ‘play nice’ with other nations such as Japan and China—but coming across as completely unnerving and awkward to be around.

His desire to have friends was what likely drove him to the idea of the Soviet Union; a Union where he personally thought he could bring together all of the nations of the world as one under a single roof. He Succeeded, for a while; pulling in nations such as China, Ukraine, North Korea, and the Baltic Nations under the colours of the Soviet Flag. His ambition was to pull the whole world in under his control—and most of the world saw it as Insane Russia wanting to rule the world. And perhaps this was the case for many of Ivan’s leaders—but for him, himself, he really just wanted to keep people close to him because being alone was unbearable.

It is shown in the Hetalia comic series that Ivan does not realize some of the things he does can be considered cruel or against the social norm; coming across as confused when he upsets others, or that they seem bothered by some of his actions. An example of this is how he seems to be fascinated by Prussia, always wanting to be around him and often trying to be nice to him—however, Prussia does NOT enjoy his company and actually has a tendancy to throw up blood whenever Ivan is around. This confuses the Russian nation, and he really doesn’t seem to understand why Gilbert reacts this way.

Ivan can be a gentle spirit, his love for soft things like sunflowers and sunny skies seeming almost naïve and childlike. He also finds himself fascinated with technology he does not understand, or has never been introduced to. His first time discovering the usefulness of a faucet pipe to deliver water into your own home set him off into a childish dither, exciting him to a point where he even goes so far as to carry a long-handled faucet pipe with him nearly everywhere he goes. He uses it as both a cane, and can be often seen in the comic brandishing it as if it were a weapon of sorts.

Through its many wars, its many splits and change in government in history, Russia is a very enigmatic country. A lot of Ivan’s habits, quirks, and even his personality can be viewed in the series as unusual and even confusing; and it is even said that after WW2 and even more so after the Cold War, Ivan really isn’t sane. Because of this, he seems completely able to switch between moods with an almost whip-like switch; going from cheerful, giggly and happy to completely cracked and angry. Moments later, he can even swing into a deep, overwhelming depression. It’s seen in the comic that his heart even has a tendency to ‘fall out’ of his chest, an occurrence that deeply disturbs those who witness it. Ivan himself acts as if it is nothing, and that it’s even normal, giving proof that perhaps Russia isn’t quite ‘all there’, if not quite a bit mentally damaged.

Ivan has a fondness for certain things, especially home-cooked foods such as pierogi, piroshki, and borsht. He also can be seen carrying around a bottle of vodka—usually Stolichnaya—which he drinks as if it is merely water. It seems he has been drinking it long enough to not notice the horrid afterburn it causes when drinking it straight.
He is capable of caring for others, even if it is in his own strangely overbearing way. He is constantly concerned about the wellbeing of his sisters—moreso Ukraine than for Belarus, as the latter often chases him around to a terrifying degree—and he actually does care for the smaller Baltic States when they were in his control. Even Finland mentions to Sweden that, when under Russia’s control, he had a bit more freedom to do what he wanted than he did when he was with Sweden. (Though at the same time, he admits that Berwald’s company is far nicer than that of Ivan’s.)

He seems to get along with China well enough, and India often claims to think very highly of the Russian, proving that perhaps despite his faults, Ivan isn’t that bad a person.

CHARACTER
Name: Lea
Canon: Kingdom Hearts
Timeline: End of Dream Drop Distance
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A

Personality: When he was younger, Lea had a habit of making new friends in much the same way a child would like to adopt stray puppies (and, in fact, his best friend Isa made this comparison to him at one point). He was friendly and outgoing, quick-witted and competitive. He was a troublemaker, who would break the rules just because it seemed like a good idea at the time, and it seemed like a bit of fun. He also seemed to have an obsession with wanting to not be forgotten. His catchphrase was, and continues to be, "Got it memorized?" He was charismatic, if not a bit dorky.

As an adult, Lea isn't too different from his teenage self, if only a bit more jaded and rougher around the edges. He's still the competitive person he was before - enough so that he was willing to attempt to take on Xehanort with only his chakrams against Xehanort's Keyblade, even though he wouldn't have stood much of a chance. Later, he also makes a friendly challenge to Riku that one day he will be the better Keyblade Master of the two, even though when he made the challenge, he hadn't even been able to summon his own keyblade yet (he does so for the first time only moments later).

Lea also seems to enjoy making an entrance (either that or he just has really, really close timing), as seen on two occasions. The first time, he showed up to save Queen Minnie from Maleficent and Pete only by throwing a fiery chakram through a portal of darkness with enough precision to break Pete's grasp on her. The second time, he showed up only seconds before Xehanort would make Sora his new vessel, and saved the boy from certain doom.

When it comes to his friends, Lea is no coward. He is willing to put himself in harm's way and go through anything necessary to find - and save - his friends. When he returned as a complete person in Radiant Garden along with Dilan, Aeleus, Ienzo and Even, and noticed that Isa and Braig failed to appear with them, he went on his own mission to find them, of his own volition, with his only complaint being a somewhat joking, "Why do I always get stuck with the icky jobs?" - an echo to a time as Axel when he was sent to hunt down and destroy Roxas, who had escaped from the Organization.

First Person:

[After a bit of fumbling around, the communicator's audio function turns on suddenly, unbeknownst to the one attempting to figure it out.]

-is this? A pocket watch? But why does it have this screen and all these buttons?

[There's a sigh and a bit more fumbling.]

Man, what even is this thing? Where am I? Thought I was going back to Radiant Garden, but it looks like I've landed in some kind of alternate Twilight Town...

[A pause.]

Or maybe not Twilight Town. Maybe it's a new world entirely.

Only one way to find out.

[After another pause and some unintelligible mumbling and sighing, the communicator audio cuts off.]

Third Person:

Lea disembarked the train with a somewhat ominous feeling seeming to weigh him down. One glance at his surroundings explained just why something seemed off: this was not where he had been planning to end up. Thinking back on it, he couldn't quite explain why he had been on a train at all. He had taken the train from Yen Sid's castle to Twilight Town, and from there he had been trying to reach Radiant Garden, but... this was definitely not his home world.

The sun was setting as he arrived, framing a clock tower in the middle of the city, and reminding him of Twilight Town, but, whatever this place was, it couldn't be Twilight Town. He paused in his thoughts when he noticed the feeling of something dropping into the pocket of his black cloak out of nowhere. Pulling the thing out, he noticed it seemed to be a pocket watch of sorts, though a bit different from any he had seen before: there seemed to be a screen and several more buttons than he remembered pocket watches needing.

He fumbled with the buttons while mumbling to himself for a couple of minutes, unsure what, exactly, he was supposed to do with the thing, before shoving it back into his pocket and resolving to look around this new world. Maybe he would be able to get answers from the residents - assuming, of course, that this placed had residents at all. Just as he was leaving the train station, a light rain began falling; upon pulling the hood of his cloak over his head, Lea was reminded that he hadn't been able to change out of his cloak just yet. Maybe, along with answers, he'd be able to find a change of clothes somewhere in the city.

Only one way to find out, he thought to himself, and set off into the city.

[Canon] Leonardo da Vinci || Assassin's Creed || Reserved || 2 of 3

[personal profile] master_inventor 2012-08-18 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality: A cheerful and optimistic man, Leonardo is friendly towards anyone who offers the same in return. He is openly affectionate with his friends and will take great risks to protect them, despite claiming that courage isn’t one of his strengths – shown when he hides Ezio from the Florentine guards and takes a beating for his trouble, but still refuses to tell them where his friend is. Witty and a bit of a joker at times, he does however become hopelessly impossible to communicate with when his attention is taken by something. At those times it’s best just to leave him be until his curiosity is satisfied.

He is a pacifist, and will not raise a hand to anyone in violence, but when it becomes necessary to put this aside he is also practical, understanding that not all problems can be solved peacefully. Leonardo also doesn't object to getting his hands dirty in the pursuit of knowledge, and keeps a number of cadavers in his workshop for the purpose of anatomical research.

As one of the great minds of his time, he is highly intelligent, possessing an attentiveness to detail that comes in very handy when Ezio needs him to translate the codex pages that will aid in the construction of his hidden blade and further modifications to it. In doing so, he is even able to change the initial design so that the removal of the assassin's middle finger is unnecessary. He has a fondness for puzzles and lateral problems, and becomes insatiably curious when something is placed in front of him that he doesn’t understand. Leonardo is capable of understanding the complicated design of the hidden blade, commenting upon how it is far ahead of their time in its advancement, despite its age.

Despite his innate artistic prowess, and being proclaimed a master by the Guild of St Luke by the age of 20, Leonardo is incredibly self-critical. As an artist he is accomplished and highly respected, but as he complains to Ezio and his mother upon the former’s first meeting with him, he feels that his work lacks purpose, and that painting isn’t something he thinks that he should be spending his life doing. He expresses interest in architecture and invention – something which comes into play later in his life when he constructs a flying machine – and is very humble about his achievements. While he can be easily discouraged by failure, he can just as easily leap into action on a new wave of inspiration.

Although he presents himself well, upon entering into any living space of Leonardo’s the first thing that will be noticed is that he is horrendously untidy. His indecisive personality and uncertainty about his chosen vocation mean that he is a chronic procrastinator and he will often jump from one project to another, with commissioned paintings taking years longer to complete than he initially planned. He is, in addition to this, an excitable person, forgetful and is easily distracted by things which capture his interest, something which Ezio uses to his advantage at several points when trying to steer the conversation away from topics that he would rather not discuss.

CHARACTER
Name: Aranea Serket
Canon: Homestuck
Timeline: After using her psychic power to wake Dirk up
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A

Personality:

Aranea is mostly a kind and pacifist troll, compared to the ones from the same species as her. Even when she was disliked by most of the cast of her player mates when she entered the sgurb server, she would see them all as friends anyway, though Meenah was the only one she was able to call a real and close friend, to the point Aranea is not able to fully comprehend Meenah (ie wondering if she’s being honest under certain occasions) and get influenced into making fish puns.

She likes to talk with people and get to know them better, though most of the times she talks too much and leads conversations around herself. She’s however aware of these flaws, but considering she’s from a more gentle nature, it’s not as abusive and cockish as Vriska’s personality.

She’s really caring and tries to help people to solve their problems, mostly using the expression “healing”. She is as well the Sylph of Light, and she’s able to make people see things, metaphorically and literally. It may also be noticed she might have healing powers as she offered herself to restore Terezi’s eyesight.

Besides her hero aspect powers, as a pure blue blood, she has psychic powers like Vriska. She even calls herself a “fairly gifted psychic”, being able to access and control one’s mind, after fully exploited. Though her power is weaker when dealing with humans, being only able to sense their emotions (like Jake’s flushed feelings for her) and make them wake up (like she woke Dirk when he wanted to leave the dream bubble), as well as probably make them sleep.

Though she has such strong powers, she’s not able to abuse them anyway to anyone’s doom; instead, she mentions to Jake once how those powers can be unpleasant to the point as much as she can hear people getting flushed for her, she can also hear negative emotions about her, making people with such powers delude themselves into trying to fix themselves so people won't think so badly of them. Therefore, she seems to be completely capable to control her emotions and not get herself too involved.

However, as much of a peaceful creature Aranea is, under the normal standards in her planet before provoking the scratch, she wouldn’t be considered nice but instead boring. She seems to be disappointed about her own personality to the point she wish she was more confident, outgoing and dramatic, resulting in becoming Mindfand in her post-scratch life, being exactly what she wished she was, though it came along with their people’s enslavement and almost extinction.

First Person:

[It is not entirely dark; actually there is a high probability of twilight arriving soon, when yet another train arrives to the mysterious town. Slightly puzzled, the female troll walks out of the train, wondering about her whereabouts. Is this yet again the gods’ work? Even now, she can’t tell it herself. Examining the posters, she immediately recognizes that is not the afterlife anymore.

Ruby City.

Sauntering off the train station, she glances around, trying to figure out where she could lead so she wouldn’t get lost. However, it didn’t take her long to feel a watch on her wrist, confusing her at first but not taking her much time to recognize it as a communication device. And so the troll turns on the video feed and starts speaking
]

Pardon me, but would you mind telling me where am I located? I might be considered fairly new around these corners, so a helpful hand would be more than welcomed.

Third Person:

She didn’t want to admit it, but the troll was already tired of it. After all those millenniums waiting to finally be able to meet Meenah and guide her in the afterlife, she lost her yet again. Yes, that definitely was the best time to be thrown in that damn city. Couldn’t the gods wait a little longer, letting her stay some time with her? Is being selfish for once asking a little too much?

But honestly, she was already giving up on the idea of believing all this world belonged to any of the gods who’ve assisted her so far. She couldn’t even speak with them anymore. And all those thoughts were exhausting. Probably she could learn with Meenah for once and feel ---EXCIT---ED!! for being alive again.

Well, what is done is done. Time to move on. She cleaned the single tear that fell off from her left eye. Probably that was the right time to experience life once again. A sylph like herself couldn’t only help others; she had to help herself as well, and have a balanced mind to heal those in need.
Soon she noticed her watch was recording her all that time, leaving her startled in the start. For how long was it turned on?

“Greetings”, she slightly blushed, as she found it embarrassing anyone seeing her so weak and vulnerable. “It seems the watch decided to have a malfunction on the worse occasion. I’m sorry you had to witness me like this. I hope I’ve not worried you in any way”.

[personal profile] rising_chrysanthemum 2012-08-25 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:

Japan is a nation that took extraordinary leaps and bounds in socialization and modernization following his initial contact with the world outside his islands. What was once a nation known for being a hikikomori (shut-in) is now a proud and polite nation known for their technological advancements and being among the leaders for erotic works, advanced robotics, unfailing politeness, and a careful preservation of traditional culture while adapting to the modern world. He is friends with several nations, most especially Prussia: who had the greatest influence on how Japan decided to modernize upon initial contact with the outside world. Even in the modern day, the pair are considerably close to one another to the point where many would outright call them lovers.

That being said, Japan is still Japan, and it shows in ways many would expect and be surprised by. As would be suggested by practically inventing the modern concepts of “otaku” culture and “hentai”, Japan has moments where he proves himself to be incredibly geeky and highly proficient with all manner of technology. He is also known amongst his friends and enemies for being one of the few nations in the world who can be unflinchingly polite, even while insulting people. His predilection for politeness comes from his isolationist years, during which he developed the five pillars of honor system for dictating how one ought to live their lives. Japan also uses honorifics when speaking to people, although he will drop these honorifics when speaking to his closest of friends. Prussia is among the nations whom Japan speaks to without honorifics.

Japan’s relationships with different countries reflect how the nations feel about each other in the modern age. He’s currently still in recovery from the tsunami and earthquake that caused the nuclear disaster in his country, but is holding strong. It’ll be a very cold day in hell before Japan blatantly asks for assistance, but in times of crisis, he will rarely refuse assistance offered by other nations. In spite of all the cruelty they cause, he also carries a mark of pride regarding the Yakuza, knowing the mob organization to be among the first responders to many a national crisis before any official relief force can be brought in to help. Japan also holds a fondness for many older aspects of Japanese culture and can be coaxed into talking about Japanese history under the right circumstance.

Overall, Japan is a nation that doesn’t look particularly intimidating, but the fact that he’s lasted for so long in spite of the isolationism and surpassing many other nations in various subject matters speaks for itself. Though he has had little need to fight in recent years, Japan is still a proficient fighter ready to defend the honor of his country and his people.

People who have met Japan will often remark on how he doesn’t smile much, but close friends will be among the first to talk about how he can be amazingly adorable and loving. Japan usually denies such accusations. In his days as a shut-in, he rarely ever spoke to people. Among the most notable occasions was when France came to visit and offered Japan a cat in return for opening his door to start up friendly relations between their nations. Japan’s response was to only open the door to his home just a sliver that he may be permitted to just take the cat. His otaku and perverted sides show up in ways that even other nations don’t expect, like Italy’s shocked response when he found traditional pornography in the seemingly innocent Japan’s home. Japan also has a closet in his home exclusively for his cosplay clothing and accessories.

Though he still holds firm to many of his old beliefs, it is noted that while he still remembers the youkai (demons/spirits) that roam his country, he can no longer see them as he used to. The modernization he went through, especially World War 2, are among the major contributing factors in this. Japan looks back on the war with regret, as do other nations, but reassures himself by thinking of how he did what was expected of him at the time. This was also a period in Japanese history where he found himself at odds with different cultures and their traditions, such as Italy’s fondness for open displays of attention and how other nations would rather accept defeat rather than commit honorable suicide.

Though he has moved past some of those old days of traditionalism, there is still a part of Japan that adheres to the old traditions in the strictest of ways. He still wears kimonos and yukatas (traditional Japanese clothing), but occasionally dabbles in Western styles of dress. One of the most striking examples of his Western clothing is his white military uniform from the World War.

A final word about Japan’s personality: He loves cute things. If it’s small, big-eyed, floppy eared, fluffy, squeaks, peeps, mewls, barks, or has a twitchy nose of any sort, he will find a way to make it his own. When he was working on submarines as part of the Axis, one of the most important things he paid attention to was how many different colors and patterns he could create for the subs. Truly, a man of vision, talent, and an living magnet for adorable things.

[OC] Rosalind Strange aka Lysandra Kastaros l Not Reserved 2 of 4

[personal profile] crimson_drachma 2012-08-25 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:

Rosalind was born at a time when girls were not expected to do much more than learning to weave, dress prettily, marry, and have children, which is often reflected in how she carries herself. Her early interest in fighting and related masculine activities meant she had to constantly prove that she was worthy enough to teach in the art of combat and that competitive side has yet to die out. After receiving the blessing of tutoring from her father, she quickly proved herself to have a stubborn streak much like her father’s and for good or bad, she’s never saw a need to distance herself from it. She also sees a warriors’ profession as being noble and worthy of praise and will be swift to reprimand those who do not see the beauty that lies within combat and the many ways in which a person can fight.

In spite of her masculine profession, Rosalind is incredibly feminine and quite happy to have been born a woman. When questioned by members of her family about why she would allow herself to walk a path as perilous as that of a soldier, she would inform them that it is what the Fates decided her life would be. To refute the will of the divine is a folly she’ll never take part of. When she isn’t training, Rosalind is content to enjoy many aspects of the arts and has a fondness for strings and woodwinds in orchestras. Among her favorite musicals and operas are The Magic Flute and Sweeney Todd.

Being half-divine and extremely long-lived has also left Rosalind prone to situations where she is quite capable of guessing what people are feeling, although she does not show this trait often. The side most people see upon first meeting her is a confident and beautiful young woman who looks like the sort who’d fit right in at an outdoorsy kind of career, like a park ranger. She dresses primarily in feminine clothing and loves long and flowing skirts that swirl around the legs, partly because the effect is particularly stunning while dancing. Rosalind is also the loving sort and enjoys the company of children, as they remind her of her large and extended family.

This doesn’t mean she is without her issues, of course. Balancing out her gentle and loving nature is a fierce temper that has claimed lives in the past when offenders to her sensibilities lacked sense enough to run away. She’ll exercise caution when facing an opponent, but rarely runs from a fight once it’s presented to her. Rosalind can also have moments of arrogance where she sees herself as being superior and can be quite bull-headed when engaged in an argument. The only thing worse than being wrong, at least for her, is being incapable of defending her own stance on something. Rosalind also has a fear of being alone, and often seeks to become a part of a group.

On a whole, Rosalind is the kind of person who would make a great ally and a loyal friend, if you don’t mind her dominating personality and ego.

World Information: Rosalind’s world is essentially our own, but she is capable of commenting on how the gods of the Greek Parthenon, and others, are still influencing the world long after people stopped believing in them.

CHARACTER
Character Name: Anya Braginskaya | Russia
Canon: Axis Powers Hetalia
Timeline: Modern Day
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: I’m currently playing Spain, and though these two are from the same canon, Anya is actually an AU version of Russia and does not exist in Spain’s version of the world. Thus, he wouldn’t actually know her. That said, they both also run different circles, and it’s highly likely he wouldn’t meet her outside of occasional nation things or other such things. Because of this I feel that it wouldn’t truly be a conflict to have both of these guys here.

Personality:

Himaruya has given very little in terms of personality, saying only that Russia is the “wearied mother type” and I’ve taken creative liberty to work around that.

Anya is a woman of several strengths. She’s beautiful and witty, strong and full of passion. But she is also a woman who has been through hardship her whole life. In this, it becomes increasingly apparent that as a person she is jaded to the world and the people around her. She is warm without the depth of caring to an overarching general, vicious in her dislike to those who have wronged her in some perceived fashion and thorough in her grudges. Because of her rough past, Anya finds it increasingly hard to trust people and will often keep other nations and people at an arm’s length away from her simply because she’s afraid of them getting too close and hurting her.

So yes, trust is a thing that is hard to come by with Anya. She would love to have people who understand and trust her, people to go to when something is wrong and she doesn’t know what to do, but Anya is aware that this is a simple dream and she is incapable of this. So often she doesn’t try, too set into her ways to let others in. She’s strong willed and a force of nature. If anybody can do it, it’s Anya. However, this is a bit of a double edged sword. Because of her attempts at doing everything herself, Anya has the habit of wearing herself to the bone and continuing on past this. Because she’s done this for a long time, she’s extremely capable of hiding this and making it seem like nothing’s wrong, but often she’s about to drop. But she is a stubborn woman and will not turn back and accept ways that she knows does not help her. So here, we can see that Anya is a person who would rather surge forward and make her own path, carve it with her own hands if need be than to depend on somebody else’s help.

She is also a master of masks and wields them as easily as she pleases. As I mentioned before, trust is a tenuous thing with Anya and given the masks she weaves into her everyday life it’s easy to see why. She’s a liar and a manipulator, twisting words and situations to what best helps her and her situation. This isn’t always something that can be picked up on, however as Anya is subtle and takes caution not to get caught. If and when she does, however, Anya is not afraid to lash out with words or physically, she’ll be a cornered animal in her attempts to get away and vicious in her words and touch.

That said, Anya is for the most part, remarkably calm. She tends to spend her days with a smile on her face and an even tone, despite all the teasing she does. She’s also incredibly loyal to her people and her loved ones and is willing to go to any lengths for them. She loves strongly once she lets you into her heart and will go above everything if the situation calls for her help. Likewise, she can be blind to faults and will defend a person no matter what.

So in the end, Anya is a complex sort of woman, one who can lie on either end of the spectrum and be perfectly comfortable. She’s beautiful and deadly, vicious and caring, and above it all she’s the representation of the Russian Federation and things defer to this. She’s not one to let herself get walked over and that’s exactly how her country is too.

History:

Russia is an old nation, and her history could be very, very, long, so I’m going to be vague in some of the places I touch upon. If there are any comments please ask!

Russia’s history starts early, sometime in the 800s when the Varingian Rus reached Kiev. However, the “Russ” state at Novgorod is when Russia’s people and lands truly started forming and that is not till around 862. The people were simply a loose conglomerate and not really nation material just yet, and for these earliest parts of her life, Russia and her two brothers basically wandered the lands. They were still very small in form and had nothing to do with any loose governments that had formed around Novgorod and other places. The capital move to Kiev in 882 drew them closer to their people enough so that they built themselves a small little house on the outskirts of town. They still didn’t really interact with the rulers of Kieven Rus, but up through the next few centuries until the Golden Horde invades in 1237 they are drawn closer and accept parts of their nation business. For Russia, this happens more when in 1169 the capital moves to Vladimir, which is by Moscow.

As stated before, the Golden Horde invades and devastates Kieven Rus from 1237-1240, and from this point onwards through 1380 Russian land is under the Tartars’ rule. This means that in essence Russia was with the Golden Horde and kept like a little pet until the other nation got tired of her and foisted her off to her own people. This is, ultimately, part of the Golden Horde’s undoing as it led to Rus being able to grow up a bit with her own people and while she was not exactly out of a child’s body by this point, she had grown some. It was enough for her people to rise up and throw out the Golden Horde and form the Grand Duchy of Moscow. They were still a tributary to the Golden Horde until 1480, however, so Russia was still not completely her own yet.

Now, the Grand Duchy of Moscow lasted up until 1547 when Ivan IV (Hint: There are a lot of Ivans.) takes the throne and becomes the first official Tsar of the Tsardom of Russia. So we have about 200 hundred years, where Russia’s people conquer and annex surrounding lands such as the Novgorod Republic and the Grand Duchy of Tver. Ivan III adopted the title tsar, and also claimed “Ruler of all Rus” as his title. For 43 years Russia was ruled by Ivan III and it lead to her territory tripling in size and the ability to successfully campaign again the Grand Duchy of Lithuania which was a major rival power at this time. In addition, Russia became known as the “Third Rome” through her ruler’s marriage to the niece of Byzantium’s last emperor. In 1500, Russia is actually able to defeat Lithuania and take lands away from her; something the next ruler also succeeds in doing and gains lands all the way to the Dniepr River. This river just so happens to be one of the major rivers in Europe and it allowed Russia to open up trade down the line.

So basically, Muscovy was a period of strengthening and growth for Russia. Speaking in age, she was in about her preteens at this time. She manages to grow a bit more during the Tsardom, enough to hit that awkward teenage stage, which she only manages to grow out of during her time as an empire.

Being stuck as a teenager for centuries is just one of the reasons why we do not envy nations.

Moving on, the Tsardom was declared and led by Ivan IV, who is perhaps better known as Ivan the Terrible. Ivan IV expanded Russia’s lands even further and begun the task of annexing Siberia. We could explain more on Ivan the Terrible, but really all you need to know is he created a treaty with England, added more lands, created a new set of laws and a rural government, oh and there was a reign of terror somewhere in there.

Around 1589 the Russian Orthodox Church becomes independent and kicks the other orthodox churches to the curb, this is significant only in the fact that the Orthodox shaped Russian culture from the Keiven Rus conversion for a millennium. It’s not until the Soviet Union goes Atheist that the Orthodoxy has to go underground. The majority of Rus’ people practices underground, and switch holidays and traditions around to be able to keep practicing their faith. Though Russia has lost a lot of faith in any deities out there, she does follow the people’s example in this.
Going back to the topic, however! After a few Tartar raids on Moscow, and several years go by the Time of Troubles rears its head. This period can basically be explained away by a lot of fake Dmitri’s and also a lot of dead Dmitri’s. Simply put, the heirs to the throne have all either been killed, plague’d, famine or died long since. When things turn almost impossibly cliché and the cold weather led to famine, famine led to economic collapse, disorganization and depopulation led to banditry, the Cossacks grew restless, starvation and plagues broke out in the cities everyone blamed the not very popular ruler.

So, Russia is in a panic trying to find the new heir when all out of the blue, Poland comes trotting up on her pony and declares she has Dmitri, an heir, back home. Which is great and all, but really, Russia was pretty sure this guy had died a while back. Through shenanigans, and a dead Dmitri and the current ruler of Russia later, Poland invades and it’s with the help of Sweden that Russia manages to drive away Poland, and a second Dmitri she’d dug up out of the woodwork. The guy who’d got put on the throne, a highly unpopular member of the National Assembly, was forced to abdicate. The second Dmitri didn’t take the throne however, because Poland had a brilliant plan.

Said plan was for her prince to rule Russia.

Now, Sweden had some beef with Poland around that time, and this was not cool in her boat. So what does she do? She turns around and declares that Dmitri was with her all along.

So they go to war.

But Poland isn’t done just yet. She decides that hey, it would totally be cool if her prince didn’t become Tsar, but her king became the king of Russia instead. Okay, so we’ve got Catholic Poles controlling Moscow and Smolensk. Protestant Swedes occupying Novgorod. The throne is still empty, the National Assembly is feuding amongst themselves, and two rival imposters, a prince, and a king are all vying for the tsardom. Elsewhere in Russia, banditry and starvation has brought the country to her knees.

Sounds like a pretty hopeless situation, doesn’t it? How on earth does a nation bring themselves out of this?

Basically? A huge surge in patriotism. No, seriously. The dismal state of the nation basically convinced everyone that they really needed to band together as Russians and throw these guys out.

So they did.

Once the Russian resistance had ganked themselves an efficient leader, the sheer ferocity of the resistance shocked the occupiers and Russian cities were quickly reclaimed with only a few land losses to end the war. These lands would be gained back over the next centuries however. This whole thing led up to the start of Romanov rule, and they would be Russia’s ruling family to the death of their line in 1917 with the end of the Empire.

But we have yet to truly reach the empire yet. See, it doesn’t start till Peter I takes the throne in 1689. Peter the Great, as he’s more commonly known, was one of the most influential leaders of Russia. He developed it from a still medieval state that had yet to go through the renaissance the rest of Europe went through, and opens up Russia to Western culture. He develops the nation into a then modern power, and creates a new Capital that will be called the “Window to the West” and later on Leninsburg.

This capital is St. Petersburg.

This growth and modernization is enough to send Russia through a growth spurt, and through Peter, and Catherine’s rule she grows until she reaches the extent of her growth a bit before Napoleon’s invasion.

Peter did a lot for the nation, including starting Russia's first newspaper and editing the first issue himself, raising woman's status by having them attend social gatherings, ordered the nobles to give up their traditional clothes for Western fashions and also requiring they shave off their beards. He advanced Russian education by opening a school of navigation and introducing schools for the arts and sciences while also reorganizing and reforming the Russian armed forces and created a modern navy modeled on European practices.

Also, he introduced potatoes. Yay, Potatoes.

Peter’s death in 1725 does not spell the end for the growth of the nation, but it does provide a running start for Russia to grow and prosper. During this time is when Russia is able to interact the most with the rest of the world for the first time in her life, but she finds herself increasingly different from the others and not as easy to integrate into modern society in other countries. She’s sort of that country bumpkin trying to make it big in a capital city. It doesn’t really work out too well. Also during this time there are a lot of pretty constant wars with Turkey, Prussia, Poland, France and Britain, and though Russia has actually grown enough at this time to be able to join the war front if she was a man, she’s instead kept at home. Occasionally, however, her stubborn streak shines and she slips away to join as a nurse. She still manages to sharpen her capacity for strategy in this situation and grows in her strength as nation and person. This basically dominates her life for the next several decades off and on.

Catherine II’s rule is really the next big milestone, as she turns Russian into one of the strongest powers in Continental Europe, but more so, she’s important to Anya because of the strength of a female ruler who in turn strengthens Anya’s resolve and her abilities with in her court. It’s during Catherine’s rule that Anya actually flourishes the most a person, but it also had the bad habit of fostering her stubbornness. There’s more I could expand upon here, but it would simply come back to the sheer amount of renovation Russia undergoes during Catherine’s rule and the fact that Russia herself rises up and becomes stronger in her own self. But I’ll stop here and move on to more interesting things.

Because in 1812, Napoleon invades, and Russia follows the scorched earth strategy by burning down Moscow to force him back. With General Winter’s help, and the Russian peasants’ guerrilla warfare, thousands of French soldiers are taken down and driven out.

Badass, am I right?

So we have Russia, burning down her capitol to drive back France, who had been something of a mentor to her a century or so ago. Ultimately, this just strengthens her distrust of the other nations.

Even with Napoleon out of the picture, however, Russia is not done with war. For the next several decades various wars and campaigns sweep Europe and Russia continues to gather land and power until WWI rears its ugly head and drags Europe down with it.

WWI is essentially not very successful for Russia to put it lightly. In the beginning, it starts out with devastating military loses at Masurian Lakes and Tannenburg and greatly weakens the Russian army in the very first stages of the war. Lending more damage to the moral of the people was Rasputin’s growing influence over the royal family. Russia spent WWI split between the battlefields and at home, but she too, like the vast majority of her people did not trust Rasputin and his influence over the tsarina. The stirrings of rebellion were getting louder, and Russia was split between both sides. On one hand, her royals had been there since day one, she’d seen them grown up, and been there all their lives, but the people are intrinsically tied to her and her psyche. So in the end, she caves in and follows the revolution.

In January of 1905 protestors gathered at the gates of the palace. They were peaceful striking workers, however the palace guards and Russian troops stationed there fired on the workers, wounding and killing hundreds. This event, “Bloody Sunday”, cracked Russia’s mentality because of the strain her people killing their kin caused.

After 1905, Russia is never quite the same. She’s able to keep himself together for the most part and go to war like a good little nurse, but often she’s unsure in her stance and the hold of her royals upon her people. In addition, she worries over the state she’s in and the corruption and poverty that is rampant. Eventually, she finds herself being dragged out of a world war and into a revolution. It is her hope that this will stabilize her and help her people. But it becomes increasingly apparent that this is not the case and she simply withdraws within herself. Her distrust of nation and people comes to the forefront here and she’s increasingly jaded.

The 1917 overthrow of the monarchy and their following execution is possibly a furthering cause of this, but while she was there for the Romanov’s deaths, she did not personally kill them. The death of the monarchy doesn’t exactly stop the problems in Russia at this time. There’s still civil war going on, even though the nation is under Lenin’s control and stability is not something that seems on the horizon. With the Red Terror pushed forward by Stalin, and the communist party itself getting purged for three years and five million dying of famine nothing seems secure. The formation of the USSR in 1922 seems as if it will lend more stability but Stalin taking power and collectivizing agriculture and starting up industrialization doesn’t help and famine strikes once more. For almost twenty years after this, Stalin’s Great Purge kills millions. This and the upcoming WWII means that Russia is a very sick nation. Famine strikes hard, and not even a nation can escape that.

[Canon] Gailardia Galan Gardios/Guy Cecil || Tales of the Abyss || Reserved || 2/3

[personal profile] brilliant_gardios 2012-08-26 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality: Guy Cecil has, since he was a young child, served House Fabre of the Kingdom of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear. He has played a part in raising Duke Crymzon Herzog fon Fabre’s son, Luke fon Fabre, during his childhood. This was even before Luke was supposedly kidnapped by the Malkuth Empire. He was around seven when he first began his service, and as he was too young to help his caretaker Pere in the garden, he was instead left to entertain the Duke’s son.

In the year ND 2011, the true Luke was kidnapped from his manor home, and replaced with an almost exact replica. Stripped of his memories, the only ones he could depend on were Guy and the crown princess of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear, and Guy found himself growing close to the young boy more and more. This is important to remember, given Guy’s true reason for serving under Duke Fabre.

Through most of the game, it is assumed that Guy has always been Kimlascan and of a low class, when really, he was born of the rivaling Malkuth Empire as Gailardia Galan Gardios (and to be honest how could no one notice that he didn’t have the dark hair and eyes of a typical Kimlascan citizen, but instead the light hair and blue eyes of a Malkuthian? I mean really). His parents were Count Zygmunt Bazan Gardios and Eugenie Cecille-Gardios (His father true Malkuthian and living on the then-existent island of Hod, while his mother was a citizen of Kimlasca who married the Count shortly before the onset of the Hod war. Seeing as Malkuth and Kimlasca were pitted against each other in this war, the marriage brought much shame to his mother’s line). Young Gailardia was born on the Isle of Hod, a truly tragic circumstance since when he was five, the eventual catalyst to the Hod War took place. Kimlasca and Malkuth had always held a tense relationship with one another, and it was only a matter of time before an invasion was imminent, though the building of fomicry technology on the island probably didn’t help to ease matters. Hod was attacked, perhaps due to its isolation from the mainland and primarily Grand Chokmah, the fortress capital of the Empire of Malkuth, and the entire House Gardios was decimated. The order was given by Duke Fabre to spare no one, which the soldiers took very deeply to heart, killing even the women and children in the manor. Gailardia’s sister Marybelle sought to protect him from harm, and with a small contingent of maids, shooed the five year old boy into a fireplace, hiding behind the grate with the express order that he was not to move or make any noise. The fright of approaching Kimlascan soldiers presumably rendered the young noble unconscious, leaving his sister and the remaining maids to protect him. By the time Gailardia came to, there were no survivors. More traumatizing still, he had ended up surrounded by the dead, bloodied bodies of his sister and all the maids that had protected him, the horror of such triggering his lifelong gynophobia. His mind repressed the event, however. So he doesn’t remember the one important thing that gave him his fear, at least not for most of the game.

His personal caretaker/servant Pere, who was not present during the slaughter, eventually arrives at the manor, too late to have saved anyone but the young heir to the House Gardios, and so takes him from the island as fast as he can. This turns out to be for the best, as the island was soon destroyed and sank into the ocean, something Gailardia would not learn the true reasoning for until he became older…which was that one of his closest friends was used for such a dark purpose.

For some time, Gailardia and Pere stayed in the Malkuthian citadel town of St. Binah, until the young noble expressed a wish to work in the House of Duke Fabre. He was, even at this age (or perhaps due to it), overtaken with the want for vengeance. To make the Duke suffer as he had suffered, he planned to kill the man’s son. Hired by one of the Duke’s servants for gardening, Pere introduced Gailardia—or rather Guy Cecil—as a relative. At some point during his long servitude, he encounters another servant of his old home: Vandesdelca Musto Fende, who now goes by Van Grants, probably to hide their true lineages from the Kimlascan family they served. Between the two of them, they intended to kill Luke and destroy House Fabre from the inside.

However, Guy’s plans did not go quite as intended, as after Luke was kidnapped, he was charged with taking care of the boy and reteaching him everything he had forgotten, from his memories to the simple tasks of learning the everyday language and taking care of himself. The inner hatred however, did still exist for some time, as evidenced by his affliction with a Curse Slot. This Curse removes all inhibition and triggers certain feelings in the subconscious, and under it’s influence, Guy attacks Luke several times. Upon the removal and the explanation of what a Curse Slot truly is, Guy is forced to admit his lineage and why he harbored his feelings. He states, however, that he no longer truly feels that way, as Luke did him no harm. Throughout the game, Guy also reveals his plans with Van, and tells the man that he no longer wants any part in what he is doing, as it will result in the death of the world. He also faces his gynophobic tendencies with increasing ease as time passes, at least until he finally remembers why it is that he fears women, and becomes introverted over it. Eventually he realizes that he should not fear the sacrifice his sister and the maids took to save him, and while his phobia is not entirely resolved, he does find it easier to manage.

Upon the resolution of the game, Guy is presumed to have reclaimed his royal lineage and now lives in his home country working for His Majesty Peony Upala Malkuth IX

As far as his personality goes, Guy has always come across as a charismatic and chivalrous character. He tends to be upbeat and positive to counter Luke’s negativity, and has a hard time focusing on the flaws of others. Despite Luke utterly destroying the city of Akzeriuth in a blind and misguided attempt to curry heroic favor, and therefore killing the already-suffering people, Guy was the least harsh of all the party members, instead saying “Don’t make me think any less of you than I already do.” And even despite this, he meets Luke partway through his journey through the Aramis Cavern and expresses a desire to be a part of his group once more, along with Tear. Guy’s not ostentatious, but he can be a little over the top. His first appearance and joining of the party consisted of him vaulting off of a land dreadnaught and freeing Luke, Tear, and Jade from the grips of the enemy after announcing “Enter the Amazing Guy!”

Aside from Jade, Guy tends to be the most observant and perceptive character in the party, and maybe because of that, Jade often asks Guy to explain everything to anyone in-game who needs a synopsis. Guy is also somewhat of a pushover, and not only allows himself to be bullied by Jade, Anise, and Princess Natalia, but he has also been assigned before as the keeper of Emperor Peony’s pet rappigs.

As previously mentioned, Guy has a very acute fear of women, also known as gynophobia. He states in-game that he “Loves women!” but when approached too closely or touched, he reacts by screaming and cowering, as evidenced when Anise jumped onto his back in fear of a mouse, and he pushed her away, protectively covering his head and shaking badly while shouting for her to “get away!” or even when he was introduced to Tear and refused to shake her hand. Eventually it becomes a point of teasing and he doesn’t seem to take terribly to it, though he does beg that the women please stop doing it.

As far as his chivalry goes, Guy does indeed care about the women of the party enough to defend them just as easily as he defends Luke, and has done so for Natalia on more than one occasion. In particular, despite his gynophobia, he has rescued Anise from certain death falling over the edge of a cliff by catching her hand and pulling her up over the edge. It becomes clear then, that when dire circumstances arise, he knows when to put aside his fears and help those he cares about.

Though he’s already bright and cheerful, Guy tends to be even moreso around technology. His room at House Fabre is littered with fontech, and he describes himself as a “fontech buff.” Whether this means he is skilled in assembling said fontech remains to be seen, but he does understand the basics, enough to either spazz or explain the way things work to some of the other party members. Mostly…it’s just spazzing out at how cool he finds it.

Another thing to take note of is that Guy has a special sword-fighting style known as the Sigmund style, which utilizes both the sword and sheath. The former is offensive, while the latter doubles as both but is mainly defensive. He is a master of this style, which requires a katana-like blade rather than the bulky blade of the typical Albert style swordsman, but never drew much attention to it as the Sigimund style is passed down secretly, and links back to his particular house. His blows in this style are less powerful than the Albert style teaches, but they are also swifter and more numerous.

[Canon] Kirei Kotomine | Fate/Zero | Reserved | 2/4

[personal profile] seeyousuffer 2012-09-08 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
"I have no ideals or desires, so why was I chosen to fight in this battle?"

At his current canon point, Kirei is a grave, outwardly calm man who hides deep feelings of depression, emptiness, and despair behind a mask of propriety and piety. He may not be an extrovert or a man likely to be termed "friendly", but he is not at all timid, and he is not unwilling to speak or express his opinion. He can be straightforward to the point of bluntness, for he sees no reason to soften his speech. Now and then, a glimmer of wry humor does almost surface in him, not that anyone realizes it, as it is suppressed along with his emotions. It is, perhaps, a precursor of things to come.

The quiet Kirei is a dangerous man. Having been trained to serve as one of the Church's Executors, or Mage-and-Heretic-Killers, Kirei is skilled in physical as well as magical combat. Relentless and remorseless, he thinks nothing of dispatching those duty dictates he eliminate, but he is much more than mere muscle. He was the top student at his theological college, some might say a prodigy, and he is quite intelligent, more than able to discuss the finer points of theology and philosophy.

Kirei's father is a priest (though the Holy Church of F/Z is loosely based on the Roman Catholic Church, they don't require celibacy of their priests), and all his life, Kirei has tried to be a dutiful son as well as a man of faith, to do what is asked of him as well as what is expected. To an extent, thus far, he has been successful. Both his father and the Church see him as just what he has striven to become, believing in the façade he's created. He rose quickly through the ranks of the Church, but while doing what was expected of him, he hasn't acted in his own interests so much as in others'. He doesn't care about his accomplishments. He feels empty inside, and he is searching for meaning in his life. He still believes in God, but he no longer believes that the love of God will save or transform him, so there is an element of hopelessness and desperation in that belief.

That is why, when he is chosen to serve in the Grail War, Kirei is taken aback. Firstly, because as a man of the Church, he hadn't expected to be asked to serve in a battle between magi, and secondly, because he is informed that the Grail chooses only those with a great need for it. His father believes he is a man of great faith, but as far as he's concerned, he has no desires and no ideals. No one is aware of what Kirei's wish might be, not even Kirei.

His father and Tokiomi Tohsaka assume that he was simply chosen to aid Tokiomi, the candidate the Church approves of. They are very wrong. For as long as he can remember, Kirei has been plagued by his own nature. He has never pursued one course for long, no matter how he excels. He transferred from department to department within the Church, never remaining long enough to attain top rank, although he easily could have. He is a man who is seeking something. His emptiness, or lack, is a lack of normal, desirable feelings, but it is not true nothingness. It may be a void, but it is one that desires to be filled.

"Pleasure? You’d ask me to commit something so sinful and corrupt? Pleasure is another thing that I lack. I seek for it but cannot find it."

Kirei holds within him an awful secret.

He cannot find satisfaction or true self-actualization, because every time an inkling of self-realization comes to him, he pulls away from it, labels it a sin. The things he is capable of feeling, which bring him pleasure, are strange and unpleasant. Throughout his life, he has tried to hide from himself, to teach himself to feel normal emotions instead.

Desperately, he has prayed for God to save him, thrown himself into his work. He tortures himself, allowing himself to suffer pain and perform any penance, in an attempt to purify himself, but in vain. His austere and masochistic way of life strengthens him and causes other to admire his piety, but does not change him in the way he would like. He strikes some as passionately devoted, but as his manner is so cold, some question this. Tokiomi, for instance, initially thinks he has a nihilistic air rather than a passionate one. Yet Kirei's actions are so convincing that Tokiomi amends that thought, coming to mistakenly believe Kirei is loyal. When he later dies at Kirei's hand, he is unable to comprehend what has happened. Kirei's father, at one point, says that Kirei would throw himself in a fire if the Church ordered him to. This is true, but not for the reason his father believes. He would throw himself into the fire not because of his ideals, but because of his inability to have them.

In his quest to save himself, Kirei even marries and tries to start a family. He believes that being a husband and father might help him to feel normally, to connect to others. This attempt goes horribly wrong. His wife is eventually driven to suicide in an attempt to make him feel something. He abandons his daughter completely, leaving her with his wife's relatives. Although he weeps over his wife's death, he is overcome, and appalled, by the fact that he simultaneously wishes he had been the one to kill her. For Kirei does have a wish, a great desire, unrecognized by himself because he has spent his life denying it: he takes pleasure in the suffering of others. Others' pain is his bliss. This is the buried wish that the Grail chose him for. He is stated to have been born with that desire, but due to his upbringing and his wish to serve and be saved by God, he has managed to avoid his nature and his fate for more than 20 years.

His wish, though not quite an emotion, does surface, as not a desire, but an echo of one, or a desire for desire. It gives him a grim yet perverse curiosity, for he both denies and is drawn toward his inner self. Kirei is capable of feeling a strange fascination for certain people. They are people who he believes, on some level, can teach him something about himself. Notably, during the Grail War, he becomes interested in Kiritsugu Emiya and Kariya Matou, believing the former to be a man like him, and interested in the latter because of the sheer intensity of his suffering, which he finds fascinating.
