✗ Please submit your application with the journal you plan to use if you have one made already. If not, another journal is fine, but we prefer your intended journal so it makes for an easier time in granting access to the mod journal and the contacts page.
✗ For very long applications, we would ask you to please separate them into various comments so that they will not take up too much of the page.

A note for CR AU applications

Timeline: Right at the end of Book 2, after Azula took Ba Sing Se and the “gaang” was forced to flee.
Items with character at canon point: Toph will have the clothes she’s wearing (obviously) and her passport. She might also have a bit of Earth Kingdom money too.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A

Personality: Toph’s personality is a lot like the element she can control. She’s stable, strong, and can be quite stubborn. She has a tendency to face her problems head-on and she isn’t shy about speaking her mind, even if it’ll make the people around angry or uncomfortable. Throughout the series, it’s fairly common to see her say something that ends up making another character annoyed or embarrassed. She’s not afraid of calling people out on their mistakes. As for Toph when she makes mistakes, she may be stubborn about it, but once she sees the consequences of her actions, she will admit that she had done something wrong and apologize. While she will willingly lie and scam people, as seen when she went to a certain Fire Nation town where she “scammed scammers” with her earthbending, she doesn’t lie to her friends. In fact, she’s very upfront with what she had done in that town despite Katara’s disapproval.

While Toph was raised in high society and learned the proper manners that accompany it, she chose to leave that kind of life behind completely after joining Aang. Toph is often seen spitting, picking her nose, and belching throughout the series. Toph had to keep up appearances in front of her parents, but now that she’s free of them, she doesn’t bother with manners at all. She also keeps herself covered in a “healthy coating of earth,” meaning that she doesn’t bother to wash too often.

Toph also has a lot of pride in herself. Due to her parents treating her as a helpless child since she was born blind, Toph always strives to prove how powerful she is, and this isn’t entirely limited to her bending. In one instance, she and Katara had gone to s spa for a girl’s day out (which she objected to at first) and on the way back to where they were staying, three older girls thought it would be fun to poke fun at the make-up they had gotten. Unfortunately for them, Toph and Katara are both master benders and they were standing on a stone bridge. Toph used her bending to make them fall through to the small stream below, while Katara used her skills to wash them away. Toph was not about to let those girls get away with calling her names.

During that same event, however, we do see that Toph is conscious about her appearance, despite pretending not to care. Due to her blindness, Toph can’t see what she looks like, and reveals to Katara that she likes not having to worry too much about appearances. During that conversation, she does show that what the girls said to her did bother her, and she had to take a moment to remind herself that appearances didn’t matter. “I know who I am.” When Katara told her that she really was pretty, it clearly gave her a boost to her confidence.

Toph’s other main insecurity is her parents. Throughout her life, she’s struggled to get her parents to understand that her blindness isn’t really much of a handicap to her, and as a result, her parents have sheltered her to the point where a lot of people didn’t even know that she existed. When her father did see her skills after she and Aang were captured by the Earth Rumble VI, she was devastated to hear that the only result was that her father ordered to have even more security around Toph. This was the last straw, and convinced Toph to run away with Aang to be his earthbending teacher. Running away however, hasn’t kept Toph from thinking about her parents, as evidenced when she got a false letter from her mother, stating that she wanted to talk to Toph. (As it turns out, the letter was written by the men her father hired to bring her home to lure her into a trap, which she walked right in to.) It’s very clear that Toph doesn’t hate her parents, but can’t live with them due to their misunderstanding of her.

Toph’s blindness however, is not one of her insecurities. She talks about it quite a bit throughout the series, but not in a way that expresses discomfort with it. She knows her eyes don’t work, and that’s that. Her earthbending allows her to “see” and get around just as well as anyone else, so she doesn’t feel like her blindness is any kind of burden. In fact, she’ll use her blindness to poke at other characters. While looking for Appa in Ba Sing Se, Sokka took the time to try to paint fliers. Aang and Katara pointed out his poor artwork, and Toph added that his pictures look just like Appa to add a bit more insult to injury. In a few instances, we see that the Aang, Sokka, and Katara all seem to forget that she’s blind at all. During the time Toph was scamming the Fire Nation town, Katara confronted her with a wanted poster of her. Toph had to remind Katara that she couldn’t see what was on the paper that Katara had shoved in her face. It kind of became the running joke of that entire episode.

Abilities: Toph is an earthbender, and one of the best ones out there in her time. For those unfamiliar with the series, this means that she can literally bend the earth, the ground, rocks, etc. to her will. She does this through movements with her body, and it looks a lot like martial arts. (The creators based Toph’s particular style on the Southern Praying Mantis style of Kung Fu.) By the time I’ll be taking her, Toph had just figured out how to bend metal, and is the first and only person to do so.

Toph is also blind. However, this handicap doesn’t do much to slow her down, as her earthbending skills allow her to feel vibrations in the earth to locate anything in contact with the ground. In this sense, she’s usually far more perceptive than most other people, as she can sense the tiniest of vibrations, even those of ants walking back to their hill. She is also a kind of human lie-detector, as she can feel the breathing and heart beats of other people and can feel the changes in them when people lie. Her abilities are limited though, as she has no way to detect anything hovering in the air without someone to point them out to her. She is also unable to read and write, as a form of braille does not exist in the Avatar universe, at least, not at the time she has lived.

[Toph waved her passport in front of the waiter’s face. And tossed a silver coin at him. He apologized and suggested Toph wash some dishes to pay for the meal she just consumed.]

Do I look like a dishwasher to you?

[She hopped up from her chair.]

Look, I gave you money. I’m done here!

[As Toph walks out, the waiter follows and explains that there is no currency system in Ruby City.]

That’s stupid. Just take my money. I’m outta here.

[Toph storms out the door and slams it with the aid of her bending to shake the building for some added emphasis. If there’s law enforcement in this city, they’ll likely be directed in Toph’s direction for eating without paying her bill.]

Prose Log Sample: Toph stumbled on to the platform at the train station. It was as if she was in a daze. It wasn’t until the train pulled out that she started to come to her senses.

“What the -“

This didn’t make any sense. The last thing she could remember was gripping on to Appa as he flew her and the rest of the gang out of Ba Sing Se after Azula’s coup. She didn’t even remember landing! Toph crouched down and pressed her palm to the ground to get a better feel for the vibrations that would tell her where she was. It was clear that Aang, Sokka, and Katara were nowhere around. In fact, the strange building was completely empty save for her and the strange machine that had seemingly brough her hear, but it was quickly moving away. Toph frowned. In her experience, large metal contraptions were inventions of the Fire Nation…

While the train station was empty, Toph could still feel that there was life outside. She walked out of the station, passed the message boards that she had no way of reading and out to town. Her first thought was that she was in the Fire Nation, but it wouldn’t make sense for her to be captured and just left to wander the streets of some random town. She walked up to the nearest person walking past.

“Hey, what is this place?”

The old woman scoffed. “What do you mean? You’re in Ruby City, child! Where else would you be?” She shook her head and continued on her way, muttering about how strange kids were getting these days.

Toph huffed and folded her arms. It was at this moment that she discovered that something had been placed in her pocket. She raised a brow as she took it out and turned it over in her hands. It was round and had a small chain attacked to it. There were buttons on the sides and a cover to swing open. Toph could feel that there were a bunch of tinier mechanisms inside it, but she had no idea what they were or how they worked. It was unlike anything she had ever come across. She shrugged and put it back in her pocket. Perhaps she’d find a use for it later. Right now, she had a bigger problem to deal with. She had to figure out what this “Ruby City” place was and how she could reunite with her friends. Toph wandered the streets of Ruby City, looking for any clues that might help her.

Personality:
Osamu Kimizuka is a character from Ritsuka’s past who is shown in only chapter currently to highlight and underline key aspects of his own personality. In a way she acts as a foil to his traits and is a means to give a glimpse into Ritsuka’s forgotten past. The first and most apparent trait exhibited by Osamu is her independence. In order to find Ritsuka, Osamu would have had to research where he moved to and what school he was most likely to attend would be. She then took it upon herself to travel alone from the inner part of the city to a more rural ward. When she arrived, much like Soubi when he was first introduced, she waits outside the school completely alone until she sees him walk by. It is also commented on that she does not have many friends and given the lack of hurry home even as it starts to get late and dark, one could assume that she is either a latch key kid or that her parents are not very attentive to her whereabouts and she enjoys a great deal of freedom. The fact that she took the initiative to skip school, and travel that distance on her own without anyone shows that she is capable and comfortable acting on her own and lives a rather independent lifestyle.

With the independent lifestyle come a few oddities and quirks naturally. First is her name Osamu, this is generally a boy’s name and is something that she seems rather self-conscious about; claiming to only allow Ritsuka to call her by it though she does also grant Yuiko special permission as well. Like Ritsuka, Osamu is something a photography lover, though she prefers still life and taking pictures of places and things rather than people; with the exception of an occasional candid shot of others when they’re not looking. She only wants to take pictures of things in their natural state rather than an artificial one; which is why she doesn’t like taking pictures of people as they pose and smile rather than having a true or natural expression of who they are. Her preference for the natural state of things leads her to be rather blunt as well, having no problem guessing and discussing other people’s appearance or personality, freely pointing things out that can at times seem a bit insensitive or off color even though she means no offense by it. At the same time though she likes to play around and make jokes about things as well; going so far as to pretend a simple quirk between friends is a really deep and important secret.

Osamu is someone who doesn’t make friends very easily, but once she does she cherishes their friendship. This is the reason that she sought Ritsuka out, because he was an important friend to her; and why she has no problem sending pictures to Yuiko though the other girl sees Osamu as a love rival. With her friends Osamu smiles, laughs and is very open. She picks up on the subtleties of who they are and what they would usually behave like, being able to easily identify whether something was their idea or something that someone else came up with and they’re adjusting to. With those that she doesn’t know she can be very standoffish and cold, often giving them little more than a side-glance. She has no problem talking to strangers, though she doesn’t have very much interest in people in general; falling back on her independent nature which may come from necessary self-reliance.

She is a child, but one that is able to take care of herself and put together a plan to accomplish what she wants. Despite her youth she is intelligent and well composed a bit rash but at the same time cautious and observant.

History:
Osamu is the first born child of her family and an only child, she was born to parents that were a little older and father who had desperately hoped that he would have a son. Even though she was not the boy that he had hoped for her father still gave her the name Osamu, and still pushed the expectation for her to study hard and master all that she did. As an only child, Osamu was never babied and was raised in a pretty cold environment, taught to appreciate what was around her and to keep her eyes open to the world around her.

In school she always remained at the top of the class, joining the photography club after looking through an album of abandoned construction zones and buildings that were left in disrepair. From that time on she took up photography and enjoyed sneaking off to take pictures of various places around Tokyo and learning how to develop pictures on her own. Making the most of her name, she would occasionally cause trouble by sneaking into the boy’s line during physical exams or confusing new teachers when changing grades. At home she was left to her own devices and allowed to what she wanted and was provided pretty much anything that she asked for from her parents so long as she continued to do well. It was this independence and self-reliance that she recognized in Ritsuka; fostering a friendship with one of the only other people that seemed to share her passion for pictures. She was drawn to his expression and the way that she could seem to relate to how he seemed to feel.

Once he moved away Osamu spent a little time with a few other kids around the photography club, working on various albums and maintaining her grades. However, over time she became more and more curious how he was doing after the tragedy of what had happened. In speaking with the teachers eventually she found out the school that he transferred to and resolved to visit when she had a chance. For several weeks she waited until an afternoon where she really wouldn’t miss anything in afternoon classes and hopped on the subway out to the ward where Ritsuka’s school was, getting directions from the internet the night before and planning out the route she would need to take.

After seeing him and making friends with Yuiko though Osamu was confident that he was alright and was in good hands. With the friends that he had she wouldn’t need to worry about him and looked forward to seeing him smile more rather than the brooding expression she had always seen him with.

Abilities: Osamu is skilled at taking and developing photographs.

Relationships to Canon Characters:
Ritsuka Aoyagi - Osamu is Ritsuka's closest friend from his previous school, she was with in the Photography club and was the only person that he seemed to talk to regularly. She cares deeply for Ritsuka as a friend and wants to ensure that he is doing well.
Yuiko Hawatari - Though she has only met Yuiko once in person, she considers the other girl a friend and trusts her to look after Ritsuka. Osamu also occasionally sends her pictures of Ritsuka that she took they were at the same school.

Personality: Blavat comes off as a charismatic and friendly man, very good at drawing others in and putting them at ease with his casual attitude and warm smiles. As a fortuneteller he enjoys counseling his visitors and seems to be extremely benevolent, never charging for his readings and even giving out free food and silver jewelry (which is very pricey in the time period). He encourages others to shine their brightest and share their own glimmer, seeming to promote an environment of equality between all the classes that frequent the Music Hall.

He is rarely seen without a grin and dislikes situations getting too serious, encouraging others to smile as well and often cracking jokes to alleviate tension or get reactions out of others around him. He can also be quite mischievous and has a lewd sense of humor, regularly making comments about his female customers' breast sizes (i.e. claiming he can easily read Lizzie's heart because hers are small). His jokes are, unsurprisingly, rarely appreciated.

Despite the easy-going and bubbly personality he usually puts on, Blavat is not all that he seems. He swings from serious and even subtly threatening to laughing and joking within seconds, making it difficult to read his true tone. He is also a very skilled manipulator and, thanks to his abilities, he knows exactly what buttons to push to get others to do what he wants. He has amassed quite a following at the Music Hall, and his terminology and ideas have spread to them through his fortunes and the songs he writes. His sway over people is very evident when he implies that Sebastian devours peoples' light the crowd instantly is sent into an uproar, only to be silenced just as quickly with a wave of his hand. He also has exploited the S4 following their expulsion from Weston, easily luring them in with the promise of being able to share their talents and "glimmer" again at the Music Hall, making them stars and using the promise of redemption to urge them on. He works them to exhaustion in dance training but has so completely convinced them that they continue for his praise and the "present" of a new song. It is likely he has manipulated Lizzie in a similar way, as he knew of her concern for Ciel and his well-being.

While the full extent of his motives are still unknown, Blavat's ability to lure in followers and suspicious actions make him a man not to be underestimated.

Background: Blavat is a fortuneteller who works at the Sphere Music Hall, where he is renowned for the accuracy of his predictions. He has somehow convinced the four former prefects of Weston College to work for him and perform at the music hall under the pretense of "sharing their light" and bringing happiness and joy to the visitors to the hall. However a number of deaths involving those who have visited the "private events" at the hall lead to the Queen calling in Ciel Phantomhive to investigate that incidents.

Nothing else of Blavat's background or true motives is known at the moment, but the wiki for more information on the Blue Cult Arc/the Sphere Music Hall is here.

Abilities: Blavat is an extremely gifted fortuneteller, accurately able to tell a persons' concerns, likes/dislikes, personality, and what star protects them by simply putting a drop of their blood into his teacup. He also seems to have a "sixth sense" of sorts outside of just using his divination, as he is able to recognize Sebastian as being non-human after simply glancing at him. However he didn't seem to be able to specifically pinpoint him as a demon, instead just referring to him as "darkness" and "a black hole", so it's possible he just has some kind of aura-seeing ability. Additionally, he is very skilled at clothing design and composing, as he created all the outfits and music used in the Sphere Music Hall.

While he claims to be human, given his canon it's difficult to say right now whether Blavat is just genuinely-gifted or another kind of creature masquerading as a man. As new chapters are released and more information is found out he would likely be given a canon update.
